5 Rundezvous April 2017 COUCH TO 5K - VERSION 3.0 When the city ran to learn and learnt to run

BY SHWETA PAROPKARI

For Hyderabad Runners, the first quarter of the year marks the tapering of Marathon training period. But it is also the time to build runners out of beginners, train and tune them and above all, add wheels, apply gears and infuse fuel to lift them from sedentary lifestyles to the running oasis. Hyderabad Runners takes grand pride in driving Couch to 5K across the city aimed at training the energetic and enthusiastic who have the intent but are searching for a window. This year too, 30+ mentors and their indefatigable dedication made Couch to 5K a great success. From fitness to diet, running tips to relaxing methods, this initiative saw energy levels gushing like a monsoon brook merging with the splendid sea of experience and mastery. Across the city from the western IT origins to the serene eastern corridors, from the northern industrial districts to the southern thresholds, downtown to uptown, the grounds were abuzz. Heartening was the increased participation from cross section of people cutting across demography, genders and age groups.

Into the third year, as the legacy continues, Rundezvous decodes the initiative and the reason behind its popularity

6 Rundezvous April 2017 What is Couch to 5K? Hyderabad Runners’ Couch to 5K Training is an eight-week program, designed for beginners who want to embrace an active lifestyle through running, walkers who want to complete their first 5K, runners who have run a 5K, but want to improve their skills, families who want to run together in a structured environment to name a few. Furthermore, under the leadership of experienced mentors, runners will be introduced to proper running form, warm ups before and cool downs after runs , appropriate clothing for running, hydration, static and dynamic stretching etc. The third edition of this initiative was run at 18 locations across the city with more than 400 participants and 35 mentors handling the training. The groups met five times a week – thrice for running and twice for training.

Meet the Mentors A mentor is your trainer, guide, and counselor all rolled into one. A mentor doesn’t just train you to run, he/she supports you to get fit, be a better person and help you rediscover yourselves. The powers that be at Hyderabad Runners choose people who personify all the above qualities to be the mentors for the Couch to 5k training programme. Here are the profiles of some of the fantabulous mentors for the recently concluded edition of Couch to 5K.

At the end of eight weeks of training, the participants run their first race – a 5k run titled Graduation Run. This year’s graduation run was held at Hitex grounds on the 5 th of March and saw nearly 450 participants run the course. The fact that their respective mentors ran alongside them, encouraging them from the start to finish line seems to have helped. 7. Krishna Durbha (Aparna Nallagandla) I am 43 years old and was struggling to run for more than 4 mins for the whole of last year. The C25K is so well designed that it helped me learn a number of tactics that took my capability of running just for 4 mins to 40 mins without breaking a sweat. The importance of warm up, cool down and the position / posture of the body during the actual run was so well explained which I think actually helped increase my capability and stamina. Also, I was very impressed the way the program’s pace increased steadily over 8 weeks. I thought 8 weeks was too aggressive but it was absolutely not. Last but not least and most important, my mentors Arun and Poonam were extremely helpful. I was the slowest runner but I always had the company of Arun in the end (he used to run with the fastest runner of the group and myself - just not sure how he did that). Poonam was continuously encouraging and motivating ALL the time. Thank you both for being my mentors - very lucky to be in your group. Kudos to Hyderabad Runners group for conducting such a program. I feel a very different person after this experience (being a true runner).

8. Smita Panda Couch to 5k was a wonderful experience. For a starter like me who started running from scratch to finishing 5k in 33mins and looking forward to finish it in sub 30mins.It all happened because of the motivation by my mentor Poonam Shravage. The discipline to reach the class on time, to the strength trainings, core exercises and the small tips for run by Poonam has helped me to achieve this. Being a mother, I could start running only because of the additional batch at 8A.M. Now I don’t run just to build endurance and being fit but because running is now an integral part and daily routine of my life. I just love running. Thank you Hyderabad Runners for the lovely program.

It is common knowledge that it is important to drink plenty of fluids when the temperatures go up like right now in summers. But, staying hydrated is important not only in hot weather conditions but also throughout the year. Water is one of the vital nutrients necessary for our health and wellbeing. An average adult human body contains 50-65% water. The Harvard Medical School Special Health Report notes that water performs several important functions in our body such as- carrying nutrients and oxygen to your cells, flushing bacteria from your bladder, aiding digestion, preventing constipation, normalizing blood pressure, stabilizing the heartbeat, cushioning joints, protecting organs and BY DR. LAHARI SURAPANENI tissues, regulating body temperature, maintaining electrolyte balance PhD, Food Science and Nutrition etc. Providing your body with enough fluids to perform all the above [email protected] mentioned tasks is called staying hydrated. Hydration is a term used to www.nutrifulyou.com describe state of water balance or water content in our bodies. There are three states of hydration- hypohydration or dehydration, euhydration or normal hydration, and hydperhydration or excess hydration. The body has no provision for storage of water. Therefore, the amount of water lost every 24 hours must be replaced to maintain healthy state of hydration. There is a lot of confusion about how much water should one be drinking. The hydration needs of the body can generally be fulfilled by deciding how much water to drink and when to drink based on thirst. However, the hydration needs change depending on factors such as the ambient temperature, humidity, kind of physical activity and specific health conditions of the person. For example, athletes lose about 1.5 - 2.0 kg of body weight from fluid loss when exercising above temperatures of 25°C and low humidity. Maintaining adequate hydration is important especially during endurance activities such as long distance running and cycling for management of heat stress and for prevention of exercise-induced muscle cramping. For these reasons, several recent guidelines recommend that the fluid loss during exercise should not exceed 2% of body mass. Several problems arise from the imbalanced state of hydration, whether it is dehydration or excessive hydration. Dehydration can cause fatigue, nausea, weakness, muscle cramps, disorientation, slurred speech and confusion etc. Over hydration on the other hand can cause exercise associated hyponatremia (EAH) or water intoxication. EAH can produce symptoms of fatigue, mental disorientation, gait alterations, breathing difficulty or no symptoms at all, making it difficult to diagnose and

19 Rundezvous April 2017 differentiate from dehydration without the help of a trained medical professional. These general guidelines will help you prevent both dehydration and water intoxication:

1. There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to how much water a person should drink on a daily basis. Listen to your body and drink water when you are thirsty, even on the days you don’t workout.

2. Take small sips of water periodically throughout the day rather than loading up with large quantities of water fewer times during the day.

3. During your workouts or endurance activities such as runs and cycling, drink according to the rate of sweating. The chances of dehydration during an activity lasting less than one hour are very low. So you don’t need to overload yourself with water.

4. There is no need for drinking sports drinks on a daily basis even during activity. Sports drinks are usually sources of not only minerals but also carbohydrates which will add excess calories to your intake if not monitored and regulated carefully. Limit the intake of sports drinks to occasions where your runs last longer than a couple of hours in high temperatures.

5. Schedule your workouts or runs to a cooler time of the day to control loss of water through sweating and increased body temperatures.

6. Please continue to hydrate even after you complete the run/activity as per the thirst signals given by your body. But avoid drinking water in excess to prevent water intoxication.

7. Apart from water or sports drinks, you can also get your water from the foods that you eat. Include fresh fruits such as watermelon, oranges, apples, papaya etc. as part of your daily diet to help you with hydration. Other foods such as milk, curd, buttermilk, salads, soups and traditional Indian dishes such as rasam and sambar can also contribute to your daily hydration requirements.

A healthy nutritional status which is a result of healthy lifestyle goes a long way in conditioning your body to regulate hydration. So eat well, stay healthy and enjoy your summer runs!

20 Rundezvous April 2017 Healthy kids - Healthy nation!

These days, most children are not involved in any physical activities. Lack of activities among school-going children increases the risk of obesity at a later stage of their lives. It leads to problems such as weak muscles and bones, increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, higher blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels and tendency to have a more dismal outlook on life. NITHYA RAGHU There can be several reasons for this. One can be the overuse of Class 9, Bharatiya Vidya technology. Students spend a lot of time on gadgets, and prefer to stay Bhavans, Jubilee Hills indoors rather than doing something lively outdoors. Other reasons include insufficient amount of equipment or academic pressure and stress. Environmental barriers could include poor weather or lack of trans- portation. The most common barriers include lack of time. Lack of interest in games and fitness is another reason. Engaging in any physical activity, or a sport- say running, can help students in a lot of ways. Running is said to help students build endurance, perseverance and hard work. It teaches kids self-respect, commitment and builds self-esteem, all of which are important values for kids to learn and build on in their lives. It helps them stay fit and healthy for the longer run. It also increases their appetite, which makes them eat more healthy and fresh food. If lack of time is a major issue, there is one simple solution. Sleep early, and get up an hour before you usually get up. Now you have enough time for physical activities as well as school work. Start with basic exer- cises on the first few days and then step out for a walk or a jog. Slowly, start onto running a kilometre or so. The distance can gradually increase, and running becomes fun for students. Thus, they stay fit and healthy throughout their lives.

23 Rundezvous April 2017 #thisgirlruns BY SHWETA PAROPKARI

We live in times when women are demanding equality in all spheres of life. Then why should running be any different? Taking this into account, Team HR Women Power came up with an initiative titled ‘this girl runs’. The idea was to get as many women as possible to take up running, answer questions/concerns they may have about this branch of athletics, and get them to adopt an active lifestyle. These sessions happen every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month at KBR Park, Botanical Gardens and simultaneously. Once again, a shout-out to the fantastic mentors/volunteers at Team HR Women Power who’ve made this a possibility and strive to ensure that the enthusiasm doesn’t fade away. If you’d or anyone you know would like to be a part of this program, please reach out to the location in-charges.

Started by chance, sustained by choice

N. KRUPAKAR

The year was 1984 and was a significant one in my life. It was that year when by sheer chance, I partici- pated in the first ever marathon conducted in India. It was by chance and never by choice. Why and how?! Here is my story of how I became a runner (eventu- ally) by choice. There was hardly any preparation before I partici- pated in that first marathon. As I said, I never aspired or planned to become a runner. Right until my fifth standard, I had never participated in any running competition. It also makes me feel more responsible in motivating people to move away from sedentary life. Running has not only helped me keep fit but also increased my ability to focus on whatever I am doing. It has made me a determined, confident and mentally strong person who is able to withstand the challenges and stress of life. To put it simply, it has enhanced my zest for life.
