Nadat ze die bandnaam hadden ingekort tot 'AWB' begon de populariteit toe te nemen. 'Rapture' staat op het vijfde album van de band en de gitaarsolo erin is een antwoord op die van Eddie van Halen in Jacksons 'Beat it'. Randy ‘Boots’ Randolph schreef het samen met zijn gitarist James Rich. De saxofonist uit Nashville was al te horen geweest op platen van Roy Orbison en Brenda Lee’ en overleed in 2007, 80 jaar oud. Het nummer werd wereldberoemd doordat komiek Benny Hill het telkens liet horen als ie werd achtervolgd. Springsteen speelde dit voor het eerst in 1974 als opener voor Bonnie Raitt. Rockjournalist Jon Landau keek ernaar en schreef in de krant: "I saw rock and roll's future, and its name is Bruce Springsteen." Een jaar later produceerde hij deze plaat en werd daarna Bruce zijn manager. Het gekir is van zijn toenmalige vriendin Jerry Hall en het Texaanse model is ook te zien in de clip. Ze nam de titel niet serieus want stapte over naar Mick Jagger. Op het tweede album van Buckshot LeFonque worden de zangpartijen door Frank McComb gedaan. Deze zanger had er al een rijk soulverleden opzitten, o.a. bij Motown en het Philly-label. Zijn stem wordt regelmatig vergeleken met die van Donny Hathaway. Op haar twaalfde speelde ze op North Sea Jazz en daarna opende ze voor Madonna en blies bij Prince. De dochter van saxofonist Hans jamde wat met Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) en daaruit werd 'Lily was here' gekozen als titeltrack voor de Nederlandse speelfilm 'De Kassière'. Kassa dus! Hier doet Jackson Browne de zangpartijen. Clarence 'the Big Man' Clemons is ook degene die de scheurende solo in Aretha's 'Freeway of love' blaast. Zijn vader gaf hem op zijn negende een saxofoon cadeau en betaalde ook zijn lessen. Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles stond model voor de tekst van dit nummer, waarvoor zangeres Randy Crawford werd gevraagd. Maar one day she flew away. Maar toen ze nu wel eens een fatsoenlijke betaling wilde, wiste Spector prompt haar partij van de band en liet Dolores "La La' Brooks het doen. Sonny & Cher zitten in het achtergrondkoor. De tekst 'I heard the news today, oh boy' refereert aan 'A day in the life' van The Beatles. John Lennon zelf hoor je langskomen in 'Fame' en 'Across the universe'. Tegelijk met het album begon Philips reclame te maken voor zijn nieuwe uitvinding: de CD-speler. De muziek van Dire Straits leende zich natuurlijk perfect voor het nieuwe schijfje. Andy, John en Roger zijn geen familie van elkaar en de laatste moet ook niet worden verward met de drummer van Queen. Het leuke lachje is van de toenmalige vriendin van toetsenist Nick Rhodes. Sax: Steve Gregory In 'One year of love' van Queen hoor je 'm en ook in 'Honky tonk women' van The Rolling Stones: de saxofoon van Steve Gregory. Dat riffje van 'Careless whisper' is sindsdien veelvuldig nagedaan. George Michael schreef het nummer al op erg jonge leeftijd en het was een van de Wham!-demo's, waarmee de jongens een platencontract probeerden te krijgen.

The festivities began with the traditional ASH Wednesday dinner sponsored by The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes at O'Casey's and continued with the Christopher Morley Walk led by Jim Cox and Dore Nash on Thursday morning, followed by the usual lunch at McSorley's. The Baker Street Irregulars' Distinguished Speaker at the Midtown Executive Club on Thursday evening was James O'Brien, author of THE SCIENTIFIC SHER- LOCK HOLMES: CRACKING THE CASE WITH SCIENCE & FORENSICS (2013); the title of his talk was "Reassessing Holmes the Scientist", and you will be able to read his paper in the next issue of The Baker Street Journal. The William Gillette Luncheon at Moran's was well attended, as always, and the Friends of Bogie's at Baker Street (Paul Singleton, Sarah Montague, and Andrew Joffe) entertained their audience with a tribute to an aged Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The luncheon also was the occasion for Al Gregory's presentation of the annual Jan Whimsey Award (named in memory of his wife Jan Stauber) honoring the most whimsical piece in The Serpentine Muse last year; the winners (Susan Rice and Mickey Fromkin) received certificates and shared a check for the Canonical sum of $221.17. And Otto Penzler's tradi- tional open house at the Mysterious Bookshop provided the usual opportuni- ties to browse and buy. Williams ABSTRACT ‗Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop‘ begins with a crucial premise: the hip-hop world, as an imagined community, regards unconcealed intertextuality as integral to the production and reception of its artistic culture. In other words, borrowing, in its multidimensional forms and manifestations, is central to the aesthetics of hip-hop. This study of borrowing in hip-hop music, which transcends narrow discourses on ‗sampling‘ (digital sampling), illustrates the variety of ways that one can borrow from a source text or trope, and ways that audiences identify and respond to these practices. Another function of this thesis is to initiate a more nuanced discourse in hip-hop studies, to allow for the number of intertextual avenues travelled within hip-hop recordings, and to present academic frameworks with which to study them. The following five chapters provide case studies that prove that musical borrowing, part and parcel of hip-hop aesthetics, occurs on multiple planes and within myriad dimensions.
