CORDOBA OPEN TALKING POINTS

• The four-week-long “” through begins with the second edition of the Cordoba Open. Six of the top ten clay-court win leaders over the last 52 weeks (see chart above) will contest the event.

• Inaugural champion Juan Ignacio Londero returns to try to defend his title. Londero, who hails from nearby Jesus Maria, Argentina, captured his first ATP Tour singles title as a 112th-ranked wild card at Cordoba last year. He became the first player since at 2007 Amersfoort to win a title without having won a Tour-level match when the tournament started.

• All four Argentines in the Top 100 of the FedEx ATP Singles Rankings are in the main draw, led by top Argentine Diego Schwartzman, the World No. 14. 2019 finalist and World No. 22 Guido Pella, World No. 50 Londero, and World No. 74 Federico Delbonis are the Top 100 players who are also in the mix on home soil.

• Ten Argentines in total are found in the 28-player main draw this year. Last year, the all-Argentine final between Londero and Pella was preceded by a semi-final lineup which had three out of the four players from the home country (adding Delbonis). Five out of the eight 2019 quarter-finalists were from Argentina as well (adding Schwartzman and 2020 wild card Pedro Cachin).

• Londero was one of the 15 players who won their first ATP Tour singles title in 2019, which is the most first-time winners in a season since 1999, when there were 16. Four more of those first-time winners are also in Cordoba – Laslo Djere (Rio de Janeiro), Pella (Sao Paulo), Cristian Garin (Houston), and Lorenzo Sonego (Antalya).

• Maximo Gonzalez, a doubles finalist last year, aims to go one step further in 2020, pairing with as the top seeds. Gonzalez’s partner from 2019, , is one of his first-round foes this edition. Andres Molteni, who won the title last season with Roman Jebavy, teams up with Leonardo Mayer this year.
