I understand that my dissertation may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract A SIMULATION ALGORITHM CAPABLE OF MODELLING SPATIAL IMPACT POINTS FROM THE NEUTRALIZATION OF AN IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE Christopher Chan Doctor of Philosophy, Computer Science, Ryerson University, 2018 An improvised explosive device (IED) is a bomb constructed from unknown materials, often concealed, such as inside an innocuous container, and deployed in unconventional ways resulting in a potentially deadly weapon. Public safety personnel such as Explosive Disposal Units (EDUs), are trained in the safe handling of explosives and the threats posed by IEDs. One method of neutralizing a suspect IED is to use water fired from a high-powered dispersion weapon commonly known as a disrupter cannon. Our research proposes an algorithm for developing an IED neutralization simulation that can emulate real-world physical effects of the successful neutralization of an IED without danger to the public or first responders. This algorithm includes 6 methodologies with the goal of providing EDU with additional information on the potential physical dispersion of the components of an IED and any major points of impact (splatter) and possible actionable intelligence on the pose and direction of a disrupter cannon for a successful neutralization of an IED. We have developed a prototype simulation based on this algorithm and evaluated the simulation with an appropriate real-world disrupter and compared the real-world splatter to our simulation’s splatter. We argue systems developed with our algorithm may provide relevant information directly from the simulation and can be accurately used to analyze particle dispersion for the purposes of augmenting EDU IED neutralization processes. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my gracious wife, Jessica Lin Zhang, for her relentless love and support. This is the field in which major sciences are joining, blending, and integrating (Battelle Memorial Institute & Foresight Nanotech Institute, 2007; Goodsell, 2004). The prospect of nanoscience and nanotechnology in tomorrow’s science and technology has called for transformative changes in science curricula in today’s secondary education (Chang, 2006; Sweeney & Seal, 2008). Nanoscience and nanotechnology are built on top of many fundamental concepts that have already been covered by the current K-12 educational standards of physical sciences in the US (National Research Council, 1996). In theory, nano content can be naturally integrated into current curricular frameworks without compromising the time for tradi- tional content. In practice, however, teaching nanoscience and nanotechnology at the secondary level can turn out to be challenging (Greenberg, 2009). Although nanoscience takes root in ba- sic physical sciences, it requires a higher level of thinking based on a greater knowledge base. In many cases, this level is not limited to knowing facts such as how small a nano- meter is or what the structure of a buckyball molecule looks like. Most importantly, it centers on an understanding of how things work in the nanoscale world and—for the nanotechnology part—a sense of how to engineer nanoscale systems (Drexler, 1992). The mission of nanoscience education cannot be declared fully accomplished if students do not start to develop these abilities towards the end of a course or a program.

In the pursuit of pushing active character control into games, we have deployed a generalized physics-based locomotion control scheme to multiple simulation platforms, including ODE, PhysX, Bullet, and Vortex. We first overview the main characteristics of these physics engines. Then we illustrate the major steps of integrating active character controllers with physics SDKs, together with necessary implementation details. We also evaluate and compare the performance of the locomotion control on different simulation platforms. Note that our work only represents an initial attempt at doing such evaluation, and additional refine- ment of the methodology and results can still be expected. We release our code online to encourage more follow-up works, as well as more interactions between the research community and the game development community.
