The association was subsequently dissolved in 2004, but is now in the process of being reactivated and revitalized. Big History in Its Cosmic Context
Big History in its Cosmic Context Joseph Voros Swinburne Business School Faculty of Business and Law Swinburne University of Technology Abstract Current models of Big History customarily take the observed increases over cosmic time of material-energetic complexity as their central concept. In this paper, we use Erich Jantsch’s pioneering masterwork The Self- Organizing Universe as the primary perspective from which to extend the customary ‘increasing material- energetic complexity’ view of Big History in two principal ‘directions’. Firstly, outwards, with an emphasis on increasing scale, scope and context to consider whether non-terrestrial analogues of Big History might exist or have existed elsewhere, and thus to embrace the ‘sibling’ multidisciplinary fields of SETI (the search for extra- terrestrial intelligence), Astrobiology, and ‘Cosmic Evolution’. And secondly, inwards, with a focus on (human) consciousness and the increasing complexity of human cognitive experience (‘interiority’) that has been apparent over the time-frame we have been able to observe it. Since Big History is a narrative which necessarily includes our own awakening to conscious awareness—and the felt sense of ‘meaning’ which our interiority brings with it—it would be valuable to examine related models which might also allow for an integration or unification of the two perspectives of physical-objective material-energetic complexity, on the one hand, and the complexity of subjective-conscious interiority, on the other. This is important, because it might provide a pathway that could help resolve recent debates around whether, and if so where, ‘meaning’ might reside in Big History. Current models do not tend to have a clear way to do this, so a particular integrative framework is introduced and outlined—due to the philosopher of consciousness Ken Wilber—which seeks to unify the customary complexity of matter-energy view of Big History with a ‘complexity of consciousness’ view, and which thereby suggests a very natural way to resolve the question of meaning ‘in’ Big History. -

Nondualism and the Divine Domain Burton Daniels This paper claims that the ultimate issue confronting transpersonal theory is that of nondual- ism. The revelation of this spiritual reality has a long history in the spiritual traditions, which has been perhaps most prolifically advocated by Ken Wilber (1995, 2000a), and fully explicat- ed by David Loy (1998). Nonetheless, these scholarly accounts of nondual reality, and the spir- itual traditions upon which they are based, either do not include or else misrepresent the reve- lation of a contemporary spiritual master crucial to the understanding of nondualism. Avatar Adi Da not only offers a greater differentiation of nondual reality than can be found in contem- porary scholarly texts, but also a dimension of nondualism not found in any previous spiritual revelation. -

Ken Wilber’s Integral Vision: A Review Of Applications In Education Toward A “Wisdom Culture” -R. Michael Fisher1 ©2003 ABSTRACT For over 30 years, contemporary American integral philosopher, Ken Wilber, has challenged all of us to critically examine how biased, if not distorted, our current forms of thinking and knowledge are, and what kind of education ought to be developed in order to build, what he refers to as, a future “Wisdom Culture.” To date, no critical synthesis of Wilber’s work and its relationship to the field of Education has been attempted. This paper offers three real classroom vignettes demonstrating the application of Wilber’s integral approach, set within an opening fictional narrative. The remainder of the paper synthesizes an extensive search of Educational documents, and provides a critical review of 16 professional educators, from both schooling and adult education, who have published writing on applications and potential of Wilber’s philosophy, toward laying the groundwork for future educational engagement with the integral approach.. Course Description: In the spirit of dialogue and inquiry, this advanced seminar provides an in-depth exploration of the field of comparative mysticism. After discussing the various meanings of the term “mysticism,” an overview of the field of comparative mysticism and its methodological foundations will be offered. We will discuss the major horizons of the field, as well as the main families of interpretive models in the field: typological, perennialist, constructivist, feminist, neo-perennialist, evolutionary, contextualist, postmodern, pluralist, and participatory. Topical sessions will address five contemporary areas of inquiry in the study of mysticism: (1) the intermonastic dialogue, (2) mysticism and gender, (3) embodiment and erotic mysticism, (4) the ethics of mysticism, and (5) psychedelic research and mystical experience. Students select two mystical traditions, authors, notions or phenomena and compare them applying one of the models studied or their own comparative approach. Students are encouraged to approach the study of mystics and mystical texts from an empathic, participatory, and contemplative perspective. Summary of Educational Purpose: The main purpose of this course is to deepen students’ knowledge of classic and contemporary approaches to the study of mystical phenomena and comparative mysticism. An additional objective is to guide students in the selection of the most appropriate comparative approach for their research interests. FINDING THE LION’S ROAR THROUGH NONDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY: Leaving the spiritual teacher behind to directly embrace nondual being. Written by Gary Nixon – Paradoxica: Journal of Nondual Psychology, Vol. 4: Spring 2012 Summary This article is a summary of a nondual psychotherapy session with a long time spiritual seeker of 40 years who had worked hard on a meditative path with a guru, but had not experienced an awakening. In the session, he is introduced to some nondual pointers to help him realize that it is all available right here, right now, he has to only see it. Over reliance on another, letting go of effort, embracing no knowing, realizing nothing can be done, coming to the end of seeking and stopping, sitting in one’s own awareness, abiding in consciousness, and taking the ultimate medicine are all reviewed to invite the long term seeker to see “this is it.” Gary Nixon, Ph.D. is a nondual transpersonal psychologist and an Associate Professor in Addictions Counselling at the University of Lethbridge. He was drawn to eastern contemplative traditions after an existential world collapse in the early 1980’s. After a tour through many eastern teachers such as Osho, Krishnamurti, Nisargadatta, and Papaji, he completed his Master’s and doctorate in Counselling Psychology and embraced the work of Ken Wilber and A.H. Almaas. He has had a nondual psychology private practice and been facilitating nondual groups over the last ten years. 2 Deconstructing Reliance on the Awakened Other I received the call from Tim (a pseudonym). He reported 40 years of intense Buddhist meditation in a Buddhist community with an enlightened teacher, all of the years trying to become enlightened, but still no awakening. -

1 Introduction Consider that the [conflict] in which you find yourself is not the inconve- nient result of the existence of an opposing view but the expression of your own incompleteness taken as completeness; value the [conflict], miserable though it might feel, as an opportunity to live out your own multiplicity.1 “What!?” you may be saying to yourself, “I just paid good money for this book and you’re telling me to value my conflicts!? I’m trying to get rid of them, for crying out loud! This world has too damn many conflicts! What kind of nuts are you, anyway?” We will tell you, dear reader, that if you suspend your incredulity for the time that it takes to actually make your way through this book, you will find your thinking transformed about conflict. A brash and bold pronouncement, perhaps, but having seen how an All Quadrant All Level (AQAL)2 approach to conflict has transformed our own lives and work, we are confident that, at the very least, you will come away with a different understanding of conflict, and maybe even of yourself in conflict as well. A different understanding leads to a different response, and a different response can open the door to more and different possibilities, and more possibilities can include the recognition of our own evolving selves. That recognition alone—of our own evolving selves—opens up untold possibilities for understanding, engaging, and, yes, valuing conflict for its transformational potential. This book is our best effort at showing how. The two of us, Nancy and Richard, have been working together for many years—teaching, writing, and researching an AQAL approach to conflict. -

Transpersonal Sociology: Origins, Development, and Theory Ryan Rominger1 Harris Friedman Sofia University University of Florida Palo Alto, CA, USA Gainesville, FL, USA Transpersonal theory formally developed within psychology through the initial definition of the field in the publishing of the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology. However, transpersonal sociology also developed with the Transpersonal Sociology Newsletter, which operated through the middle 1990s. Both disciplines have long histories, while one continues to flourish and the other, comparatively, is languishing. In order to encourage renewed interest in this important area of transpersonal studies, we discuss the history, and further define the field of transpersonal sociology, discuss practical applications of transpersonal sociology, and introduce research approaches that might be of benefit for transpersonal sociological researchers and practitioners.
