N.J. Lowe, Comedy (Greece & Rome. New N.J. Lowe, Comedy (Greece & Rome. New Surveys in the Classics, No. 37). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2008. Paperback, ISBN 978-0-521-70609-4, $ 21.99.1 In 2005 Gregor Maurach presented the first modern introductory essay on ancient comedy to embrace the whole historical and typological development of the genre from Aristophanes to Terence. An English equivalent of Maurach’s admirable work has now been published by N.J. Lowe in the New Surveys series of the Classical Association. The book is a successor to the well known and thorough volumes of Arnott (Menander, Plautus, Terence, 1975) and Ussher (Aristophanes, 1979) in the same series. To portray the whole history of ancient comedy within a volume of just 132 pages is a difficult and ambitious enterprise. Nonetheless, Lowe has contributed without any doubt a highly valuable and meaningful overview. The book begins with an introductory chapter mainly devoted to ancient and modern theories on comedy and the comic in general (1–20). A longer chapter on Aristophanes and Old Comedy (21–62) is followed by a much shorter one on Menander and his contemporaries (63–80). The Roman palliata is treated in three sections. One of these is devoted to the problem of the “barbarous versions” in general (81–96); the two others are dedicated to the work of Plautus (97–114) and Terence (115–132) in particular. Each chapter is concluded by bibliographical notes, which not only offer helpful suggestions for further detailed study, but also delineate important trends in recent scholarship. Given Lowe’s own scholarly background, it is not surprising that the chapters on Aristophanes and Menander are the most accomplished. They delineate carefully the content of Aristophanes’ individual plays and the interpretative problems connected with them, they introduce their formal and theatrical structure, and they give considerable insight into the multiple dynamics that interlace comedy and its sister genre, tragedy, in classical Athens. These merits will enable even students completely inexperienced in comedy to grasp easily the specific characteristics of Aristophanes’ art. All in all the same is true for the chapter on Menander. The origins, dramaturgy and ideological background of New Comedy receive short, but appropriate treatment. Introductions this concise necessitate even substantial omissions. Still, it is regrettable that Lowe does not draw the reader’s attention to the concept of !"#$% &'(), which is so central to Menander’s and his contemporaries’ understanding of the world in which they lived. A judicious analyst of Greek Comedy, Lowe is also a reliable guide to Roman drama. Nonetheless, his short sketch of Plautus is not always completely convincing. Lowe correctly emphasizes that Plautus’ plays are remarkably different from the extant comedies of Menander, but he is not very precise about the nature and origin of Plautine originality. In dealing with Plautus’ dramatic style Lowe focuses mainly on certain technical aspects (cf. the discussion of the famous Dis Exapaton papyrus, pp. 89–90), and he does not really try to develop a clear and concise outline of the Roman’s very particular treatment of dramatic unity, theatrical illusion and character 1 I am grateful to Professor Timothy Moore for his help in improving the English text. !"#$%&'(&)$*)+(),-$!"#!$%!&"%%%'%%!" The crucial reason for this oversight is without any doubt Lowe’s reluctance to endorse the view, common since Fraenkel, that Plautus’ dramatic art was heavily influenced by improvisatory Italian theatre genres such as mime and the Atellana. Instead, he tries to draw a relatively clear-cut distinction between Plautus’ “poetry”, with roots in Greek literary comedy, and the genres of low comedy and farce, which used subliterary techniques. Such a distinction, however, runs the risk of neglecting essential preconditions of early Roman drama, especially the expectations of the audience Plautus had to face. To read Molière, for example, without taking into account his debt to the commedia dell’arte would lead to a somewhat incomplete view on his oeuvre – and mutatis mutandis the same seems to be true for Plautus. It goes without saying that Terence fits much better Lowe’s idea of early Roman drama, and therefore the concise account of the dimidiatus Menander’s art shows the author at his best again. With a keen eye for the essential on the one hand and the dispensable on the other Lowe has developed an insightful panorama of the ancient genre. The book will be primarily helpful to undergraduate students in English-speaking countries as a first access to the world of ancient comedy that mirrors recent trends of scholarship; but the advanced scholar may also profit from its use. The volume is to be recommended last but not least because of its extensive and carefully compiled bibliography, which shows only few notable omissions (e.g., Petersmann’s useful commentary on the Stichus and Schaaf’s indispensable monograph on the Miles Gloriosus). It is a considerable merit of the survey that Lowe does not limit himself to a more or less close reproduction of the scholarly communis opinio, but skillfully opens up here and there new perspectives on his topic. Precisely because of this the advanced reader may well feel a bit disappointed that the author did not choose to follow further a track Lowe laid himself in the introductory chapter. Lowe is right to emphasize there the troubling shortcomings of modern scholarship in dealing appropriately with comic structures in ancient comedy, given the many stimulating developments in general humour studies in the last few decades. In the following chapters, however, Lowe does not say very much about the comic in Aristophanes, Menander, Plautus and Terence. There are many handbooks on ancient comedy and many substantial bibliographies. An introduction to ancient comedy with special reference to the comic would have been a most interesting and unique enterprise, and Lowe, well informed about the topic as he is, would have been the author to write it.     Blocking Fathers, Illicit Marriages: Continuity and Change from Sophocles to Menander It is a truth universally acknowledged that the plays of Menander owe a great debt to Classical Athenian drama: connections between plays such as Aristophanes’ Cocalus and Menander were noted in didascalia, and similarly the thematic and structural similarities between New Comedy and the works of Euripides were already recognized in Hellenistic scholarship (Arnott 1972; Csapo 2000; Hunter 2011). Sophocles, on the other hand, is rarely included in this discussion of dramatic influence, more often regarded solely for his role as the pinnacle of tragic poets. It is the purpose of this paper to reanalyze possible connections between the corpus of Sophocles and that of Menander by examining both the Antigone and the Dyscolus as plays employing one of the most familiar stock characters of ancient comedy: the “blocking” father figure. This father figure—whose earliest incarnation arguably belongs to Old Comedy, such as Strepsiades from Clouds—is perhaps best known for his characterization in the plays of Greek New Comedy and their later, Latin iterations. Generally an old and intransigent father, the “blocking” figure is generically defined by his interference in the life of his young offspring; in New Comedy, this interference takes the form of intervention in the budding romance of two young lovers, whose inconvenient marriage will inevitably bring about the typical finale. This character, at first glance, may appear to be a creature created solely for light-hearted drama. Creon of the Antigone, however, whose stubborn and belligerent character has been carefully surveyed for his role within the tragedy itself (see Roisman 1996), additionally shares many features with the father of Menander’s only intact play, Knemon of the Dyscolus.

The misleading idea has surely risen because of the main source of the comic fragments: Athenaeus, The Learned Banqueters. However, the contemporary and political aspect emerges again in the 4th c. BC in the creations of a small group of dramatists, among whom Timocles, Mnesimachus and Heniochus stand out (significantly, most of them are concentrated in the time of the Macedonian expansion). Firstly Timocles, in whose fragments the personal mockery, the onomasti komodein, is still present and sharp, often against contemporary political leaders (cf. frr. 17, 19, 27 K.–A.). Then, Mnesimachus (Φίλιππος, frr. 7–10 K.–A.) and Heniochus (fr. 5 K.–A.), who show an anti- and a pro-Macedonian attitude, respec- tively. Lampe SOCIAL WELFARE IN THE GRECO-ROMAN WORLD AS A BACKGROUND FOR EARLY CHRISTIAN PRACTICE ABSTRACT The essay investigates if and how Greco-Roman theorists attempted to motivate altruistic behaviour and devise a social-welfare ethics. In comparison, it studies actual social-welfare practices on both the private and the state level. Various social-welfare tasks are touched upon – health care; care for the elderly, widows, orphans and invalids; the patron-client system as countermeasure to unemployment; distribution of land, grain, meals and money; alms, donations, foundations as well as education – with hardly any one of them being especially tailored to the poor. The enormous role of civil society – private persons, their households and associations – in holding up social-welfare functions is shown. By contrast, the state was comparatively less involved, the commonwealth of the Romans, especially in Republican times, even less than the Greek city-states. The Greek poleis often invested income such as wealthy citizens’ donations in social welfare, thus brokering between wealthy private donors and less well-to-do persons. The church, living in private household structures during the first centuries, took over the social-welfare tasks of the Greco-Roman household and reviewed them in the light of Hebrew and Hellenistic-Jewish moral traditions.     Ben Ferber The Hothouse and Dynamic Equilibrium in the Works of Harold Pinter I have no doubt that history will recognize Harold Pinter as one of the most influential dramatists of all time, a perennial inspiration for the way we look at modern theater. If other playwrights use characters and plots to put life under a microscope for audiences, Pinter hands them a kaleidoscope and says, “Have at it.” He crafts multifaceted plays that speak to the depth of his reality and teases and threatens his audience with dangerous truths. In No Man’s Land, Pinter has Hirst attack Spooner, who may or may not be his old friend: “This is outrageous! Who are you? What are you doing in my house?”1 Hirst then launches into a monologue beginning: “I might even show you my photograph album. You might even see a face in it which might remind you of your own, of what you once were.”2 Pinter never fully resolves Spooner’s identity, but the mens’ actions towards each other are perfectly clear: with exacting language and wit, Pinter has constructed a magnificent struggle between the two for power and identity. In 1958, early in his career, Pinter wrote The Hothouse, an incredibly funny play based on a traumatic personal experience as a lab rat at London’s Maudsley Hospital, proudly founded as a modern psychiatric institution, rather than an asylum. The story of The Hothouse, set in a mental hospital of some sort, is centered around the death of one patient, “6457,” and the unexplained pregnancy of another, “6459.” Details around both incidents are very murky, but varying amounts of culpability for both seem to fall on the institution’s leader, Roote, and his second-in- command, Gibbs.

Discussion on the Roman mosaic as techné or as ars, is provided, or rather, a decoration technique for interiors made at high specialization levels. When the main procedures adopted in mosaic art are established, we will show how a certain technique, a particular way in handling unsophisticated materials learnt by semi-illiterate people, lost throughout the ages, was used to express themes and motifs connected with paideia, the superior education of the Greco-Roman elite. As a case study, two mid-3rd century CE mosaics found in the so-called House of Menander, a villa located in the suburb of Daphne, in southern Antioch, will be investigated. By glossing over D’Oyly Carte, Gilbert, and Sullivan scholars have overlooked the historical significance of the Savoy triumvirate for American musical theatre—they developed a formula for producing successful musical theatre productions that Broadway showmakers ultimately embraced in later decades. That formula included the following components: a long-term, symbiotic collaboration between librettist and composer who crafted the book first and wrote music to complement it; a theatrical product that integrated story, music, character, and lyrics into a cohesive whole; the crafting of a product for middlebrow appeal; marketing practices now identified as “retail theatre;” and delegating specialized artistic tasks to an extensive, professionalized, artistic staff under firm directorial leadership. Unquestionably, Gilbert and Sullivan proved that operetta could generate big profits, and American theatricians copied them (Kislan 98). Gilbert and Sullivan’s rollicking trans-Atlantic success in 1879 motivated the American composer, Julius Eichberg, to revise his 1862 operetta, The Doctor of Alcantara, and publish a new version in 1879 with two new songs that closely imitated the Gilbert patter song and some distinctive Sullivanesque musical elements (Kaufman xviii).

The sourcebook is organized into four parts that deal with the main miracle story types and magic: Gods and Heroes who Heal and Raise the Dead, Exorcists and Exorcisms, Gods and Heroes who Control Nature, and Magic and Miracle. Two appendixes add richness to the contextualization of the collection: Diseases and Doctors features ancient authors’ medical diagnoses, prognoses and treatments for the most common diseases cured in healing miracles; Jesus, Torah and Miracles selects pertinent texts from the Old Testament and Mishnah necessary for the understanding of certain Jesus miracles. This collection of texts not only provides evidence of the types of miracle stories most popular in the Greco-Roman world, but even more importantly assists in their interpretation.     "Those That Play Your Clowns:" Comic Actors and Comic Acting on the 19th Century American Stage Barnard Hewitt (Barnard Hewitt's Fellows Address was delivered at the ATA Convention in Chicago, August 16, 1977.) It seems to me that critics and historians of theatre have neglected comedians and the acting of comedy, and I ask myself why should this be so? Nearly everyone enjoys the acting of comedy. As the box office has regularly demonstrated, more people enjoy comedy than enjoy serious drama. I suspect that comedy and comedians are neglected because critics and scholars feel, no doubt unconsciously that because they arouse laughter rather than pity and fear, they don't deserve serious study. Whatever the reason for this neglect, it seems to me unjust. In choosing the subject for this paper, I thought I might do something to redress that injustice. I hoped to identify early styles of comic acting on our stage, discover their origins in England, note mutations caused by their new environment, and take note of their evolution into new styles. I don't need to tell you how difficult it is to reconstruct with confidence the acting style of any period before acting was recorded on film. One must depend on what can be learned about representative individuals: about the individual's background, early training and experience, principal roles, what he said about acting and about his roles, pictures of him in character, and reports by his contemporaries - critics and ordinary theatregoers - of what he did and how he spoke. First-hand descriptions of an actor's performance in one or more roles are far and away the most enlightening evidence, but nothing approaching Charles Clarke's detailed description of Edwin Booth's Hamlet is available for an American comic actor.1 Comedians have written little about their art.2 What evidence I found is scattered and ambiguous when it is not contradictory.

Created originally in the third century B.C., the portrait went on to a long life in the Roman period where it was sculptured for and displayed in settings public and private as late as the fifth century A.D.
