Kesultanan Ternate Dan Tidore KESULTANAN TERNATE DAN TIDORE Rusdiyanto Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Manado, Indonesia [email protected] Abstract. The history of Islam in Maluku including the history of the entry and development of Islam among various other countries up to now is still very interesting to be studied, given the history or history agreed by researchers and observers of Islamic history. This paper describes Islam in Maluku in the framework of two major sultanates of its time namely the Sultanate of Ternate and Tidore Sultanate. Based on the search on the limited this paper shows: First, the Sultanate of Ternate and Tidore is a great Islamic kesulturasi in Maluku which intersect with a major sultanate in the archipelago that has a major role in the process of Islamization in Maluku. Second, the success of Islamization in Maluku mostly uses the term through Islamization culture in Java. Third, the Islamization Process begun from the elite accounts of the kingdom/sultanate, followed by the people. Keywords: Maluku, the Sultanate of Ternate, Tidore, dan Islamization Abstrak. Sejarah Islam di Maluku sebagaimana sejarah masuk dan berkembangnya Islam di belahan wilayah Nusantara lain hingga kini masih menarik untuk diteliti, mengingat belum adanya titik terang atau rumusan sejarah yang disepakati oleh peneliti dan pemerhati sejarah Islam. Paper ini memaparkan tentang Islam di Maluku dalam bingkai dua kesultanan besar pada masanya yaitu Kesultanan Ternate dan Kesultanan Tidore. Berdasarkan penelusuran pada sumber yang terbatas tulisan ini menunjukkan bhwa: Pertama, Kesultanan Ternate dan Tedore merupakan kesultan besar Islam di Maluku yang setara dengan kesultanan besar lain di Nusantara yang memiliki peran besar dalam proses islamisasi di Maluku. Kedua, Keberhasilan Islamisasi di Maluku banyak dipengaruhi karena ditempuh melalui pendekatan budaya sebagaimana Islamisasi di Jawa. Ketiga, Proses Islamisasi itu dimulai dari kalangan elit kerajaan/kesultanan yang selanjutnya diikuti oleh rakyat. Jawi Script is derived from the Arabic Script, but it later changed its name to Jawi because in Jawi Script there are six more new letters being added to it to represent the six Malay phonemes which are not found in the Arabic Language. The oldest known Jawi writing is the Terengganu Inscriptions dated 24 th February 1303 or 702 Hijrah. Later on Jawi Script was used extensively in the Sultanate of Malacca, the Sultanate of Old Johor, the Sultanate of Aceh, the Sultanate of Johor-Riau and other sultanates and kingdoms of South East Asia. Jawi Script had spread from Aceh in North Sumatra in the west to Ternate and Tidore in the Moluccas Islands in the eastern part of Indonesia, and then from Cambodia in the north to Banten in the south. Nowadays, about 16,000 Malay Jawi manuscripts are being preserved and kept in many libraries and archives around the world.

Indeed tahlilan-yasinan is a form of local wisdom from the worship ceremony. The ceremony as a form of respect for people who have released a world that is set at a time like the name of tahlilan-yasinan. In the perspective of Muhammadiyah, the innocent tahlilan-yasinan with the premise that human beings have reached the points that will only get the reward for their own practice. In addition, Muhammadiyah people as well as many who do tahlilan-yasinan ritual are received tahlian-yasinan as a form of cultural expression. Therefore, this paper conveys how Muhammadiyah deal with it in two perspectives and this paper is using qualitative method. Both views are based on the interpretation of the journey of the human spirit. The human spirit, writing apart from the body, will return to God. Whether the soul can accept the submissions or not, the fact that know the provisions of a spirit other than Allah swt. For a long time it took even centuries, especially when people started to recognize civilization. Clothing became an extension of the social body in their social life. In Javanese culture, self-esteem is in words, while body honor is in clothing. It's just that this phrase is only used by the elite in Surakarta and doesn't apply to ordinary people. At the beginning of the 20th century, along with the rise of the common people to the upper middle class, the struggle for elite status was fought through the wearing of clothes. Using historical methods of analysis and multidimensional approaches, the author attempts to demonstrate the complexity of the struggle of ordinary people to reach the position of the upper middle class by wearing clothes. The sacralization of clothing, long lauded by the elite, began to de-sacralize at the beginning of the 20th century. De- sacralization is symbolized by the elegant and elegant posture of the little Surakarta priyayi. ANDAYA U:-fIVERSITY OF From an outsider's viewpoint, the diversity of language and ethnic groups scattered through numerous small and often inaccessible islands in Maluku might appear to be a major deterrent to economic contact between communities. But it was because these groups lived on small islands or in forested larger islands with limited arable land that trade with their neighbors was an economic necessity Distrust of strangers was often overcome through marriage or trade partnerships. From these pieces of information it is possible to reconstruct some of the complexity of the exchange in MaJuku in these centuries and to observe the dynamism of local groups in adapting to new economic developments in the area.     INTRODUCTION Prince Nuku of Tidore is recognized as one of the national heroes (pahlawan nasional) of Indonesia. He was the leader of a successful rebel- lion against the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, VOC) and its indigenous allies which lasted for more than twenty years. Born as a Tidoran prince between 1725 and 1735, he passed away as the Sultan of Tidore in 1805.1 In 1780 he fled from Tidore seek- ing refuge in East Seram, Halmahera, and the Raja Ampat from where he launched the rebellion. In 1797 he returned to Tidore with his allied forces and conquered the Sultanates of both Bacan and Tidore. During his exile, Nuku had to fight the forces of the three VOC Governments in Maluku: Ternate, Ambon, and Banda.2 Besides possessing better weapon- ry and equipment, the VOC could also mobilize its indigenous subjects from places such as Ambon and Ternate as troops. In addition, the VOC often dispatched support forces such as ships, weaponry, and soldiers to Maluku from Batavia. In 1801, in close collaboration with the English, Nuku managed to defeat the VOC in Ternate and its indigenous ally, the Ternate Sultanate. Prince Nuku and his Tidoran adherents depended to a large extent on the support they received from various groups of Malukans and Papuans and the assistance of the English. It is intriguing to see what strategies he employed to maintain support among the Tidorans at home, his adher- ents in the periphery of Tidore, and even the English. The study was designed in the form of qualitative descriptive research by applying field research, teological normative, and socio-cultural approaches. The data were collected through interview and documentation. The result showed that tahlilan for Ternatenese is nothing but the momentum where family, relatives, friends, and surrounding communities gather to recite some hayyibah sentences (hamfdalah, takbir, shalawat, tasbih), Qur’an verses, dhikr, and other prayers. Ternate society believes that tahlilan is crucial as a medium of da’wah. There are many positive benefits felt by the people of Ternate such as psychological, social, economic, and importantly religious awareness. In religion side, tahlilan is a minfestation of love for Islam and the cultivation of the monotheism concept. The development of understanding and awareness in Muslim religion also lead to a process of evaluation and change in the implementation of tahlilan. In this case, Islamic da'wah succeeds in influencing the socio-cultural life of Ternate community. The tahlilan tradition can exist til now because it is considered to still have coherence with Islamic values, customs and culture. Ternate society still hope that the tradition of tahlilan will last forever.
