The island has been formed by four volcanoes, and the largest of these, Mt Erebus, is the world’s southernmost active volcano. Ross Island is extremely important to New Zealand as it is home to Scott Base, New Zealand’s scientific research station in Antarctica. Scott Base was established at the island’s southern point – Hut Point Peninsula – by Edmund Hillary in 1957. Scott Base is run by Antarctica New Zealand, and its main function is to support scientists as they carry out their vital research on the continent over the summer months. New Zealand has a close relationship with the USA’s McMurdo Station, which is located nearby. During the winter months the island is in Research complete 24-hour darkness and temperatures can drop to –36 °C, which makes outside activities extremely dangerous. Ross Island played a significant part in the incredible exploration era of the early 1900s, when famous explorers such as Robert Scott and Ernest Shackleton used the island as a base as they tried to be the first to reach the South Pole. -

Management Plan For Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 116 NEW COLLEGE VALLEY, CAUGHLEY BEACH, CAPE BIRD, ROSS ISLAND 1. Description of values to be protected In 1985, two areas at Cape Bird, Ross Island were designated as SSSI No. 10, Caughley Beach (Recommendation XIII-8 (1985)) and SPA No. 20, New College Valley (Recommendation XIII-12 (1985)), following proposals by New Zealand that these areas should be protected because they contained some of the richest stands of moss and associated microflora and fauna in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica. This is the only area on Ross Island where protection is specifically given to plant assemblages and associated ecosystems. At that time, SPA No. 20 was enclosed within SSSI No. 10, in order to provide more stringent access conditions to that part of the Area. In 2000, SSSI No. 10 was incorporated with SPA No. 20 by Measure 1 (2000), with the former area covered by SPA No. 20 becoming a Restricted Zone within the revised SPA No. 20. The boundaries of the Area were revised from the boundaries in the original recommendations, in view of improved mapping and to follow more closely the ridges enclosing the catchment of New College Valley. Caughley Beach itself was adjacent to, but never a part of, the original Area, and for this reason the entire Area was renamed as New College Valley, which was within both of the original sites. The Area was redesignated by Decision 1 (2002) as Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) No. 116 and a revised Management Plan was adopted through Measure 1 (2006). -

Wise2 Abstract: Subsequent to an earlier paper on Antarctic Collembola, further references and specimen locality records are given, and a new classification is used. Named species and definite distributions are combined in a definitive list of the Collembola of Antarctica. One new synonymy. Hypogastrura viatica (=H. antarctica), is recorded. Collections additional to those reported by Wise (1967) are recorded here, together with further information on some of the species, including one new synonymy. References in the synonymic lists are only those additional to the ones published in my previous paper. As in that paper, S. Orkney Is. and S. Sandwich Is. records are included here, but are excluded from the list of species in Antarctica. In addition to the Bishop Museum collections, specimens from collections of other institutions are recorded as follows: U.S. National Museum, Smithsonian Institution (USNM), British Museum (Nat. Hist.) (BMNH), British Antarctic Survey Biological Unit (BAS), and Canterbury University Antarctic Biology Unit (CUABU). The arrangement of figures and legends are as in Wise (1967). In specimen data a figure at the beginning of a group is the number of micro-slide specimens; a figure at the end, after the col lector's name, is the collector's site number. Classification Classification of the Antarctic species previously (Wise 1967) followed that of Salmon (1964) which radically changed some of the earlier classifications, separating some of the Suborder Arthropleona as distinct families in a new suborder, Neoarthropleona. Since then, Massoud (1967) has published a sound revision of the Neanuridae, in which he has sunk the Suborder Neoarthro pleona establishing the families recorded therein by Salmon as subfamilies or tribes in the Family Neanuridae. -

We report on an opportunistic observation via aerial survey, where hundreds of Adélie penguins were documented displaying nesting behaviours on fast ice ∼3 km off the coast of Cape Crozier, which is one of the largest colonies in the world. We counted 426 Adélie penguins engaging in behaviours of pair formation, spacing similarly to normal nest distributions and lying in divots in the ice that looked like nests. On our first visit, it was noticed that the guano stain was bright pink, consistent with krill consumption, but had shifted to green over the course of ∼2 weeks, indicating that the birds were fasting (a behaviour consistent with egg incubation). However, eggs were not observed. We posit four hypotheses that may explain the proximate causes of this behaviour and caution against future high-resolution satellite imagery interpretation due to the potential for confusing ice-nesting Adélie penguins with the presence of emperor penguin colonies.
