Park City, UT — The nonprofit Sundance Institute announced today the showcase of new independent feature films selected across all categories for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. The Festival hosts screenings in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort, from January 23–February 2, 2020. The Sundance Film Festival is Sundance Institute’s flagship public program, widely regarded as the largest American independent film festival and attended by more than 120,000 people and 1,300 accredited press, and powered by more than 2,000 volunteers last year. Sundance Institute also presents public programs throughout the year and around the world, including Festivals in Hong Kong and London, an international short film tour, an indigenous shorts program, a free summer screening series in Utah, and more. Semperoper Dresden: The 2020/21 season with »Semper Essenz« PRESS RELEASE ©Semperoper Dresden/photo: Jochen Quast Semperoper announces Corona replacement programme »Semper Essenz« with details of premieres for 2020/21 Dresden, 30 June 2020: The Semperoper Dresden will welcome back audiences after the summer break with an amended programme. In order to be able to offer performances un- der the current restrictions, the productions originally planned for August to October 2020 will be replaced by small-format events under the title »Semper Essenz«. In this way, the opera house will meet all the current hygiene regulations. The »Semper Essenz« series will feature musical highlights and prominent arias or ensem- ble passages from the scheduled operas, now performed in shorter concert or semi-staged productions with a reduced orchestra and cast of singers. The operas include Rossini’s »Il barbiere di Siviglia/ The Barber of Seville«, Mozart’s »Die Entführung aus dem Serail« and »Don Giovanni«, Tchaikovsky’s »Eugene Onegin« as well as Puccini’s »Tosca« and »Madama Butterfly«. The list of star singers runs from Hrachuhí Bassenz, Nikola Hillebrand, Christa Mayer, Ekaterina Morozova, Kristine Opolais, Stepanka Pucalkova to Alexey Mar- kov, Roberto Scandiuzzi, Jonathan Tetelman and Georg Zeppenfeld. The musicians of the Staatskapelle Dresden will be conducted by Giampaolo Bisanti, Jonathan Darlington, Ales- sandro De Marchi or Omer Meir Wellber. Richard Strauss: Four Last Songs A discographical survey by Ralph Moore I consider forty-six recordings of the Vier Letzte Lieder here, which is a goodly number, but by no means the total of all of those released in the nearly seventy years since their premiere in 1950. A survey cannot hope – or even want – to encompass every version but I have tried to include the most notable and have deliberately missed out a few which I know to be less than premium quality but have also reviewed one or two in the “caveat emptor” category as best avoided (see also MWI review index). These songs feature frequently in lists of personal nominations for favourite recordings, such as in the BBC radio programme “Desert Island Discs”. They are not a cycle as such, but all deal with the readiness for death and emanate a sense of calm, resignation and even transfiguration; I quote unashamedly from Wikipedia: “Towards the end of Im Abendrot, after the soprano's intonation of ‘Ist dies etwa der Tod?’ (‘Is this perhaps death?’), Strauss musically quotes his own tone poem Death and Transfiguration, written 60 years earlier. As in that piece, the quoted seven-note phrase (known as the ‘transfiguration theme’) has been seen as the fulfilment of the soul through death.” They are amenable to successful performance by a range of soprano voice-types, from the mezzo- tinged soprano falcon of Jessye Norman to the light, lyric sopranos of Lucia Popp or Anneliese Rothenberger, and although one or two sopranos have come a cropper in attempting them, there are many more admirable and even superlative recordings than failures. -

Jonas Kaufmann Since his sensational début at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in a performance of “La Traviata” in 2006, Jonas Kaufmann has numbered among the top stars on the operatic horizon. The international press has singled him out as the “new king of tenors”. Insiders praise him as the most important German tenor since Fritz Wunderlich. Jonas Kaufmann comes from Munich. He completed his vocal studies there at the local Music Academy, in addition to which he attended master classes with Hans Hotter, James King and Josef Metternich. During his first years on stage at the State Theatre in Saarbrücken he continued his training with Michael Rhodes in Trier. After engagements in Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Milan - in Giorgio Strehler’s production of “Così fan tutte” and “Fidelio” with Riccardo Muti on the podium - Kaufmann moved on to the Zurich Opera in 2001. From there he began his international career. Appearances at the Salzburg Festival and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Paris Opéra and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, La Scala Milan, the Deutsche Oper and the State Opera in Berlin, the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan in New York. In 2010 he made his début at the Bayreuth Festival as Lohengrin in a spectacular staging by Hans Neuenfels. Kaufmann is just as much in demand internationally in the Italian and French repertoires as he is in German opera. He has sung Massenet’s Werther in Paris and Vienna, Cavaradossi in Puccini’s “Tosca” in London, at the Met and La Scala.
