As an SJSU freshman, Maggie Gomez felt lost and bewildered on a campus of almost 30,000 stu- dents. She was the first person in her family to attend college and she had no idea how she'd cope. "I didn't know what to expect when I first came here," she said. "I was kind of lost. But through CALMECA, I was able to make close friends and get help with my academics." The team finished sixth of seven teams at the Fresno State Cross Country Invitational Meet in Fresno, on the 5000-meter (5K) course at Woodward Park on Saturday. But most of the SJSU runners posted signifi- cantly faster times than at their first meet a week ago. "We aren't competing against other teams right now.
