April 10, 2017, Issue 545 RAC Clark: Inside The ACMs A conversation with 52nd ACM Awards Executive Producer RAC Clark: Let’s get right to the elephant: Ratings were down again. We had the insanity of the 50th where everything fell into place, and that’s a hard standard to hold to. I don’t know what the new normal is for country music awards shows in the spring, but we’re finding it out. And I really don’t know what else to do. We had great music, great partici- pation from our stars – I’m stumped. Can we do something different with marketing, with production? We had stiff competition – base- ball, Walking Dead and WrestleMania – but RAC Clark we always do. At the same time, it was Final Four weekend, which has always been good to us, and CBS had huge ratings. We’ll do an extensive debrief over the summer and get into all the different factors. Road Warriors: Team Lauren takes their No. 1 celebration on The show was well-received in the room and our radio the road to iHeartMedia/Nashville. Pictured (l-r) are Mercury’s readers gave it high marks last week. Jack Christopher, iHeartCountry’s Rod Phillips, Mercury’s Damon I will happily say we were technically flawless. UMGN’s Royce Risser, WSIX’s Gator Harrison, manager Trisha McClanahan and UMGN’s David Friedman. Having the Entertainer nominees open was so strong and such a simple concept.

  • Issue 546 Power Gold 2017 the Year-To-Year Rate of Change in Country Radio’S Top 100 Power Gold List Appears to Have Slowed a Bit
April 17, 2017, Issue 546 Power Gold 2017 The year-to-year rate of change in Country radio’s Top 100 Power Gold list appears to have slowed a bit. In fact, the 2017 PG 100 is more similar to the prior year’s list than any two-year comparison in the last six years. There are only 14 titles on this year’s list that weren’t on the 2016 Top 100. That compares to 36 new titles in 2016, 31 in ‘15, 39 in ‘14, 22 in ‘13 and 33 in ‘12. For a smaller influx of new Power Gold, you have to go back to 2011 when 13 songs that weren’t on the 2010 list appeared in the Top 100. The year prior, 2010 saw 10 new tracks hit the Top 100 for the first time. The 2017 Top 100 Power Gold is culled from Mediabase 24/7 and the Country Aircheck/Mediabase reporting panel for the week of March 12-18 is on page 9, but here’s the Top 10. 1. • Aaron Watson Vaquero
Aaron Watson Vaquero Aaron Watson isn’t interested in what someone else thinks he should do. But instead of getting lonely as he sidesteps expectations, he’s gaining followers––hundreds of thousands of them. Delivered with a warm smile and fueled by a wild spirit, Watson’s rebellion echoes the land that helped make him. Watson remains strikingly similar to the people that still dot his native West Texas. They’re a rugged people, proud of home but humble and hardworking, the first to help a neighbor but also fiercely independent. And Watson is unquestionably one of them. “I’ve always considered myself an anti-rock star,” Watson says, his drawl cracking slightly as he grins. “People don’t like me because I’m a rock star. People like me because I’m just like them.” Throughout his 17-year career that spans a dozen albums and more than 2,500 shows throughout the U.S. and Europe, 39-year-old Watson has stubbornly and sincerely identified with the everyman––even as he’s proven to be the exception to the rule. The latest evidence of Watson’s homespun singularity is Vaquero, an ambitious 16-song set of character-driven storytelling, level-headed cultural commentary, and love songs for grown- ups that promise to further solidify his status as one of today’s finest torch-bearers of real country music. Vaquero is the follow-up to 2015’s The Underdog, an acclaimed collection that also made history. Watson was sitting at his kitchen table as his wife Kim scrambled eggs when he got the call: The Underdog had debuted at No.
