Arrangement and Maintenance of Library Material MODULE - 3 ORGANISATION OF INFORMATION SOURCES 11 Notes ARRANGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF LIBRARY MATERIAL 11.1 INTRODUCTION In this lesson, we will discuss the issues related to organization and maintenance of library material. You will be told how materials have to be arranged on library shelves and how the arrangement of books differs from the arrangement of periodicals. The library material needs to be maintained on routine basis. Maintenance of library material involves kinds of stacking, shelf arrangement, cleaning, shelving, stock verification and weeding of unwanted material. Binding of documents will also be discussed as it is essential for care and repair of documents for their long life. 11.2 OBJECTIVES After studying this lesson, you will be able to :– describe various ways to arrange books and periodicals ; identify various kinds of library stacks; explain the shelving order of books; explain arrangement of periodicals; describe the activities related to care of documents; highlight the importance of mending and binding of library books and periodicals; illustrate the role of stock verification and weeding of documents; LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE 187 MODULE - 3 Arrangement and Maintenance of Library Material ORGANISATION OF INFORMATION SOURCES justify the need for security of library documents; and give illustrations of library displays. 11.3 MAINTENANCE WORK Notes In every library, maintenance of library material involves continuous monitoring of the stack room, displaying of new material on the display racks and arrangement of the books and periodicals on the shelves after use. JRMMRA 9 (1988) The Elizabethan Diplomatic Service by F. Jeffrey Platt Northern Arizona University The critical early years of Elizabeth's reign witnessed a watershed in European history. The 1559 Treaty of Cateau-Cambresis, which ended the long Hapsburg-Valois conflict, resulted in a sudden shift in the focus of international politics from Italy to the uncomfortable proximity of the Low Countries. The arrival there, 30 miles from England's coast, in 1567, of thousands of seasoned Spanish troops presented a military and commer cial threat the English queen could not ignore. Moreover, French control of Calais and their growing interest in supplanting the Spanish presence in the Netherlands represented an even greater menace to England's security. Combined with these ominous developments, the Queen's excommunica tion in May 1570 further strengthened the growing anti-English and anti Protestant sentiment of Counter-Reformation Europe. These circumstances, plus the significantly greater resources of France and Spain, defined England, at best, as a middleweight in a world dominated by two heavyweights. -

BUILDING A LIBRARY WITHOUT WALLS: THE EARLY YEARS OF THE BODLEIAN LIBRARY ROBYN ADAMS AND LOUISIANE FERLIER CENTRE FOR EDITING LIVES AND LETTERS BODLEY’S REFOUNDATION OF THE LIBRARY AT OXFORD IN THIS CHAPTER we examine the early records of the Bodleian Library in order to explore the protean administrative processes employed by Sir Thomas Bodley and Thomas James, his first Librarian. These early records yield a glimpse of how various aspects of the library were shaped, and of the attitudes towards books and donors demonstrated by Bodley and James. Our research data extracted from these records reveal bibliographical patterns and physical behaviours which allow us to interrogate the intellectual processes at work in populating the library shelves. Erected, famously, ‘for the publique use of students’, we aim to interrogate the tension of the Bodleian’s role as a public institution promoting and preserving for posterity the muniments of early English religion while at the same time serving an academic community, the principal constituency of which were students. We aim to confront to material evidence this idea of the library for the ‘publique use of students’, and dig deeper to find other sources of motivation for the resurrection of the bibliographical monument that was Bodley’s vision. Following his withdrawal from public service in his political role as diplomatic agent in the Netherlands during the conflict with Spain between 1588 and 1596, Bodley directed elsewhere the administrative energy that had defined his career as a legate.1 His decision to return to Oxford, to refurbish the structure and furnish his newly-constructed presses with books resulted in not only soliciting philanthropic gestures from politically powerful friends and contacts but also a new sort of activity; that of organising a brand new kind of institution. -

Whether I thought about the dark and gloomy Hades, I'm not sure Venetia Phair Venetia Phair isn't a name that immediately springs to mind when you mention astronomy. But the retired teacher from Epsom in Surrey has left an indelible signature on our map of the Solar System. Now 87 years of age, Venetia Phair (née Burney) is the only person in the world who can claim to have named a planet. In 1930, at just 11 years of age, Mrs Phair suggested the title Pluto for the newly discovered ninth planet. On 17 January, the US space agency (Nasa) will launch the first ever space mission to this distant world from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Pluto, the Roman god of the Underworld, turned out to be a particularly apt title for the enigmatic object, which resides in the outer reaches of the Solar System. Mythological name The name proposed by the then Oxford schoolgirl was seized upon at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, where the planet was discovered by young American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh. "I was quite interested in Greek and Roman myths and legends at the time," Mrs Phair told the BBC News website. The syllabus in natural philosophy and mathematics was radically changed in the course of the sixteenth century with new subjects, textbooks and methods introduced. Education became more practical and less dependent on medieval antecedents. Printing technology improved textbooks and made it possible to replace them with newer versions. Following sweeping syllabus reform around 1500, the Cambridge Master of Arts course was heavily slanted towards humanism. The old scholastic textbooks were rejected and replaced with modern authors. The purpose of natural philosophy was explicitly to illuminate the providential work of the creator, especially through natural history (a newly developing subject in the sixteenth century thanks to newly translated and promulgated Greek texts) where examples of God’s work were there for all to see. Oxford remained wedded to scholastic texts although the trivium was reformed along humanistic lines. Cromwell’s visitors in 1535 outlawed scholasticism by decree but gave little indication of the alternative (their white list stipulating only Aristotle). The solution adopted by the Oxford masters was to import the Cambridge syllabus and textbooks wholesale. When the evangelical regime of Edward VI reformed the universities in 1549, the humanist natural philosophy syllabus was adjudged appropriate, especially those parts promoted by Philip Melanchthon at the University of Wittenberg.
