Mirror EPK.Pdf Bio Mirror is a mostly 80’s tribute band that combines high soaring vocals, amazing musicianship and a produc<on package that will take you right back to “The Decade of Excess.” Comprised of musicians that were touring the southeast extensively back in the 80’s, Mirror brings the high energy, soaring vocals, intricate musicianship and produc<on that was demanded of the bands “back in the day.” And while Mirror’s members don’t perform full <me, their uncompromising desire to give 100% to their shows lives on with every performance. Mirror is currently: Dr. Ron Cholfin Mike Ertle Chuck Ingram Stevie Smith Steve Spencer Dr. Ron Cholfin Originally from Ohio, Dr. Ron began studying classical piano at the tender age of 5 years old. He bagan to play his first shows at age 12 and also taught himself other instruments and wri<ng his own music. In 1978 Dr. Ron moved to Atlanta and soon joined many local musicans to begin carving out his musical career. Over the years he met and played with many of his influences while touring the country with several successful bands including Heart AXack, Extreme and Subway. His influences are Kansas, Journey, Boston, Styx, Dream Theater, Deep Purple, ELP, Yes, Toto, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, and many many others. So, why do they call him Dr. Ron? Because he is a licensed Doctor of Chiroprac<c in the Atlanta area. Mike Ertle Mike is the life of Mirror. He is always quick with his toasts and wit, while bringing power and depth Mirror’s sound. Originally from Ohio as well, Mike has played with many bands from his teenage years to now. Because he currently works for Atlanta Sound and Ligh<ng, he is the architect of Mirror’s live sound. Chuck Ingram At a very young age, Chuck decided he wanted to play guitar. For years he took jazz and classical guitar lessons. But then one day, aer sneaking down to the front row of a Van Halen concert at the age of 14 - Chuck Ingram quit his jazz guitar lessons and never looked back. Over the years he has been involved in several bands in the Atlanta area, has played shows with ar<sts such as Atlanta Rhythm Sec<on, Eddie Money, Mothers Finest, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, The Georgia Satellites, Stephen Pearcy of RATT and Nashville Star winner Chris Young and has played at events such as Daytona Bike Week, Thunder Beach, Atlanta Motor Speedway and Thunder Beach in front of thousands of fans. Chuck likes to say he is "stunt" guitarist in Mirror. When watching Chuck it is clear who his influences are. (Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and Travis Pastrana). But make no mistake, behind all the guitar throwing, tooth picking and string dives is a very accomplished guitarist. Not to men<on a voice to go with it. Stevie Smith If you have been in Atlanta for any length of <me and have been involved with the Atlanta music scene, then you know Stevie. He is originally from the southside and is most famous for is work with Nave which later evolved into Witness who had several songs wriXen for them by Neal Schon of Journey fame. Stevie is a never ending source of posi<ve energy in Mirror. His guitar skills and voice are pivotal in shaping the sound of Mirror. Steve Spencer Steve Spencer has been around the Atanta music scene for most of his life as the drumming force to be reckoned with. From his days in Illusion and now to Mirror, Steve provides the power that drives Mirror. Par<al Song List Mirror is constantly tweeking their song list. Why? Because we NEVER want our fans to get bored seeing our shows. So we rotate our sets and add or delete songs for each venue we play. This list is a sample of what we play. • “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way.

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

BY JOHN SWENSON It has been a long, vertiginous and damn exciting roller coaster ride for Rush over the past decade-and-a-half. The group has gone from being unabashed Led Zeppelinites to kings of the concept album to the thinking man's heavy metal band to an uneasy combination of eighties record ing styles and seventies relentlessness. One thing Rush has never done is rest on its collective laurels-bassist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer Neil Peart have always been the first to point out the band's shortcomings when they feel legitimate deficiencies have surfaced. Accordingly, Lee was quick to admit his dissatisfaction with the band's last album, Grace Under Pressure , even though the record , which went platinum, has con solidated the band's position as one of Mercury/Polygram's most important acts. "We realized with Grace Under Pres sure ," said Lee on completion of the new album , Power Windows, "that we were not a techno-pop band.
