What's special about my father is... "I can still see the sweet helix of pipe tobacco snaking upward from behind a mountain of newspapers and magazines. Usually on a Sun- day. My father would plow through the local and state papers and then peruse Life, Time, and National Geographic. When my father was done, I’d give them a go. The printed word captured my imagination early on. Dad was pleased when I became a columnist and reporter. While sta- tioned in Colorado in the early ‘50s, he worked on the Army newspaper. I bet he would’ve made a fantastic journalist. Another clear scene: my father comes downstairs from his smoky-sweet attic office (an early man-cave), and I’m holding out a few typewritten pages of some story I’d just finished. He takes the pages, smiles, and tells me if I keep at it, one day I’ll write the Great American Novel. If that couldn’t encourage a boy, what could?" Dana Pearson, Tourist News writer
