PKL. 15.05.2019 Vejleder | Jannick Friis Christensen Anslag 137.643 | Sider 78 Abstract The Eurovision Song Contest, or just Eurovision, emerged as a 1956 peace project aimed at bringing together a war-torn Europe. During the more than 60 years of competition, it has changed from being a small competition with quiet songs, to the world's largest, most extravagant, and most viewed song competition, and thus as a huge platform for political voices. In this thesis, I therefore seek to answer the question: How has Eurovision become an space of opportunity for norm-critical performances? and how is any space of opportunity attempted controlled by the European Broadcasting Union? To respond to this research question, it will first be analysed how Eurovision can be considered an affective event that, by virtue of being affective, opens an space of opportunity for norm-critical, or affective, performances. This analysis is based on Professor Sarah Ahmed's definition of affective events. Then, based on the French sociologist Michel Foucault, and his concept of genealogy, I will investigate how such a space of opportunity has historically been utilized, focusing on the performances that have been particularly norm- critical. From these two analyses, I can conclude how how an space of opportunity for norm- critical performances has emerged and has evolved. Here I can thus demonstrate the historical changes that have been made, from a kiss between Birthe Wilke and Gustav Winckler in 1957 being considered to be norm-breaking, to the bearded lady, Conchita Wurst, and her victory in 2014 was considered the norm for doing Eurovision. -

MOBILIZING LIGHT AND SHADOW: POPULAR NATIONALISM, POLITICAL CULTURE, AND THE EARLY GERMAN CINEMA, 1895-1918 by JOHN PETERS MERSEREAU A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by J Peters Mersereau 2015 Mobilizing Light and Shadow: Popular Nationalism, Political Culture, and the Early German Cinema, 1895-1918 J Peters Mersereau Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This dissertation explores representations of the German nation as projected onto German cinema screens in the years between the invention of film in 1895 and the end of the Kaiserreich in 1918. This was a period of intense growth for the German film industry. From a novelty feature in travelling exhibitions at the end of the nineteenth century, film was a part of the everyday lives of millions of Germans by the First World War. Unified only in 1871, Germany was a young state and attempts to define, popularize, and harness its national image formed a central and contested aspect of German political culture. This dissertation argues that the conflicting cinematic representations of the German nation in this period should be understood within the larger context of Wilhelmine political history and that invocations of the nation were instrumental in the development of the German cinema. Kaiser Wilhelm II, political pressure groups on the radical right, foreign and domestic film producers, and, ultimately, military and civilian authorities of the German state all promoted cinematic visions of the nation that were overlapping, complementary, and conflicting. Kaiser Wilhelm II was Germany’s first film celebrity and personified onscreen a nation of monarchists and military might, yet his media-constructed political authority was overshadowed by his film stardom. -

Funda BERKSOY 165 RUDOLF BELLING AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO TURKISH SCULPTURE During the years following the World War I Rudolf Belling (1886- 1972), a pioneer of abstract sculpture, became one of the most celebrated artists in Germany (Fig.1). His fame was based primarily on works such as his Triad (1919) and Sculpture 23 (1923), in which he strove toward a synthesis of Russian revolutionary art with the current modernist trends. As a member of the Arbeitsrat für Kunst (Workers’ Council on Art) and a cofounder of the Novembergruppe, he also sought a closer relationship between sculpture and architecture, successfully collaborat- ing on many occasions with architects. In the German literature on mod- ern art of the period, Belling was highly praised and embraced as one of the spokesmen of the new art1. When the National Socialists came to power in 1933 and started their campaign against avant-garde art, like many other artists, Belling too sought refuge abroad∞; accepting an invitation from the Turkish govern- ment he left Berlin for Istanbul in 1937. BRÜDER GRIMM: Kinder-und Hausmärchen Allerleirauh Es war einmal ein König, der hatte eine Frau mit goldenen Haaren, und sie war so schön, daß sich ihresgleichen nicht mehr auf Erden fand. Es geschah, daß sie krank lag, und als sie fühlte, daß sie bald sterben würde, rief sie den König und sprach „wenn du nach meinem Tode dich wieder vermählen willst, so nimm keine, die nicht ebenso schön ist, als ich bin und die nicht solche goldene Haare hat, wie ich habe, das mußt du mir versprechen.“ Nachdem es ihr der König versprochen hatte, tat sie die Augen zu und starb. Der König war lange Zeit nicht zu trösten und dachte nicht daran, eine zweite Frau zu nehmen. Endlich sprachen seine Räte, „es geht nicht anders, der König muß sich wieder vermählen, damit wir eine Königin haben.“ Nun wurden Boten weit und breit umhergeschickt, eine Braut zu suchen, die an Schönheit der verstorbenen Königin ganz gleichkäme. Es war aber keine in der ganzen Welt zu finden, und wenn man sie auch gefunden hätte, so war doch keine da, die solche goldene Haare gehabt hätte. Also kamen die Boten unverrichteter Sache wieder heim. Nun hatte der König eine Tochter, die war gerade so schön wie ihre verstorbene Mutter, und hatte auch solche goldene Haare. Als sie herangewachsen war, sah sie der König einmal an und sah, daß sie in allem seiner verstorbenen Gemahlin ähnlich war, und fühlte plötzlich eine heftige Liebe zu ihr. Da sprach er zu seinen Räten, „ich will meine Tochter heiraten, denn sie ist das Ebenbild meiner verstorbenen Frau, und sonst kann ich doch keine Braut finden, die ihr gleicht.“ Als die Räte das hörten, erschraken sie und sprachen, „Gott hat verboten, daß der Vater seine Tochter heirate, aus der Sünde kann nichts Gutes entspringen, und das Reich wird mit ins Verderben gezogen.“ Die Tochter erschrak noch mehr, als sie den Entschluß ihres Vaters vernahm, hoffte aber, ihn von seinem Vorhaben noch abzubringen. -
