Otto Abstract Virtually everyone working in cancer research is familiar with the “Warburg effect”, i.e., anaerobic glycolysis in the presence of oxygen in tumor cells. However, few people nowadays are aware of what lead Otto Warburg to the discovery of this observation and how his other scientific contributions are seminal to our present knowledge of metabolic and energetic processes in cells. Since science is a human endeavor, and a scientist is imbedded in a network of social and academic contacts, it is worth taking a glimpse into the biography of Otto Warburg to illustrate some of these influences and the historical landmarks in his life. His creative and innovative thinking and his experimental virtuosity set the framework for his scientific achievements, which were pioneering not only for cancer research. Here, I shall allude to the prestigious family background in imperial Germany; his relationships to Einstein, Meyerhof, Krebs, and other Nobel and notable scientists; his innovative technical developments and their applications in the advancement of biomedical sciences, including the manometer, tissue slicing, and cell cultivation. The latter were experimental prerequisites for the first metabolic measurements with tumor cells in the 1920s. In the 1930s–1940s, he improved spectrophotometry for chemical analysis and developed the optical tests for measuring activities of glycolytic enzymes. Warburg’s reputation brought him invitations to the USA and contacts with the Rockefeller Foundation; he received the Nobel Prize in 1931. -

We examinethe effects of these policies on the KaiserWilhelm Society in NationalSocialist Germany,the Max PlanckSociety in occupied Germanyafter 1945, the USSR Academy of Sciences throughoutthe Stalinera, and the NationalAcademy of Sciences in early cold warAmerica. In all these cases, while academicelites largelyaccepted the requiredradical changes in the rules for membershipin the scientificcommunity, they also soughtto manipu- late the processto theirown institutionaladvantage. INTRODUCTION The relationship between state power and professional autonomy has long constituted a major theme in the history of science. Throughout the eras of turmoil that defined their respective nations' politics from the 1930s through the 1950s, the states in Ger- many, the Soviet Union, and the United States became obsessively, at times para- noically, preoccupied with defining and adjudicating their citizens' political, ethnic, or moral acceptability. These concerns frequently resulted in purges from scientific institutions of persons deemed undesirable: "non-Aryans," communists, and social- ists in National Socialist Germany; "bourgeois experts" and "cosmopolites" in Stal- inist Russia; "communist sympathizers" and "subversives" in cold war America. Purges of this kind have often been understood as morality plays, with an under- standable emphasis on the victimization of the innocent by the repressive state. In what follows, we attempt to broaden the discussion by going beyond the phenomenon of purges as such. -

Meteorologische Zeitschrift, Vol. 22, No. 2, 131–143 (April 2013) Open Access Article Ó by Gebru¨der Borntraeger 2013 The Influence of green areas and roof albedos on air temperatures during Extreme Heat Events in Berlin, Germany Sebastian Schubert* and Susanne Grossman-Clarke Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Germany (Manuscript received May 1, 2012; in revised form November 15, 2012; accepted November 19, 2012) Abstract The mesoscale atmospheric model COSMO-CLM (CCLM) with the Double Canyon Effect Parametrization Scheme (DCEP) is applied to investigate possible adaption measures to extreme heat events (EHEs) for the city of Berlin, Germany. The emphasis is on the effects of a modified urban vegetation cover and roof albedo on near-surface air temperatures. Five EHEs with a duration of 5 days or more are identified for the period 2000 to 2009. A reference simulation is carried out for each EHE with current vegetation cover, roof albedo and urban canopy parameters (UCPs), and is evaluated with temperature observations from weather stations in Berlin and its surroundings. The derivation of the UCPs from an impervious surface map and a 3-D building data set is detailed. Characteristics of the simulated urban heat island for each EHE are analysed in terms of these UCPs. In addition, six sensitivity runs are examined with a modified vegetation cover of each urban grid cell by À25%, 5% and 15%, with a roof albedo increased to 0.40 and 0.65, and with a combination of the largest vegetation cover and roof albedo, respectively. At the weather stations’ grid cells, the results show a maximum of the average diurnal change in air temperature during each EHE of 0.82 K and À0.48 K for the À25% and 15% vegetation covers, À0.50 K for the roof albedos of 0.65, and À0.63 K for the combined vegetation and albedo case. -

Bamberg, Germany, 21 February 1866; d. Berlin, Germany, 16 March 1925), clinical chemistry, serology. Wassermann was born in Bamberg and began to study medicine in the nearby university town of Erlangen, before heading to Munich, Vienna, and Strassburg. In 1888 Wassermann graduated MD at the German university of Strassburg and began to work as research assistant to Robert Koch in the Institute for Infectious Diseases of Friedrich- Wilhelms-University of Berlin. Here he was introduced to the methods of laboratory experimentation and to Koch's concept of the relevance of bacteriology for clinical medi• cine. At the Institute for Infectious Diseases, Wassermann worked on immunity phenomena related to cholera infec• tion and tried to develop antitoxins against diphtheria. As a result of these experimental investigations, he received the 'venia legendi' for hygiene in 1901. Following Paul Ehrlich's advice, Wassermann began to study the binding of toxin and antitoxin in the blood. He then investigated the differing reactions of blood groups in response to various precipitat• ing blood sera. In 1902 Wassermann was made 'Extraordi- narius' at the institute and in 1906 received the directorship of the division of experimental therapy and biochemistry. -
The Dahlem Workshops
The Dahlem Workshops History During the last half of the twentieth century, specialization in science greatly in- creased in response to advances achieved in technology and methodology. This trend, although positive in many respects, created barriers between disciplines and could have inhibited progress if left unchecked. Understanding the concepts and methodologies of related disciplines became a necessity. Reuniting the dis- ciplines to obtain a broader view of an issue became imperative, for problems rarely fall conveniently into the purview of a single scientific area. Interdisci- plinary communication and innovative problem solving within a conducive en- vironment were perceived as integral yet lacking to this process. In 1971, an initiative to create such an environment began within Germany’s scientific community. In discussions between the Deutsche Forschungsgemein- schaft (German Science Foundation) and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Association for the Promotion of Science Research in Germany), researchers were consulted to compare the needs of the scientific community with existing approaches. It became apparent that something new was required: an approach that began with state-of-the-art knowledge and proceeded onward to challenge the boundaries of current understanding; a form truly interdisci- plinary in its problem-solving approach. As a result, the Stifterverband established Dahlem Konferenzen (the Dahlem Workshops) in cooperation with the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in 1974.
