  • Indian Media and Its Transformed Public
Indian media and its transformed public Maitrayee Chaudhuri Indian media has witnessed an unprecedented growth over the last two decades. This expansion does not necessarily lead to greater democratic participation for the very idea of the ‘public’ has undergone a transformation, evident in: the ideological content of the media, the extra-national membership of the public sphere and the interactive form of publicness. The article argues that the media plays a crucial ideologicalUSE role in recast- ing public discourse in India, a role which is rendered more effective because of a strong synergy between its substance and style. An often strident appropriation of the nation and the Indian ‘public’ by a middle class ideologically aligned with the project of liberalisa- tion is most evident in the media today. This is done in two ways: by an overt ideological defence of an unbridled market and an attack on the very idea of an interventionist and welfare state; and by the everyday quotidian features and news that inscribe corporate speech, create a new imaginary of a global Indian and a global Indian middle class. This contention may be sustained from a scrutiny of the media even when the period is a random month (24 May–23 June) of a random year (2007), as is the case here. COMMERCIAL Keywords: Transnational, media, public sphere, ideology, middle class, corporate culture, globalisation, India FOR After decades of sedate existence, the Indian media universe has witnessed a ‘big bang’ of sudden and gigantic expansion. The most specta- cular changesNOT are in television, where 24×7 news channels, reality pro- grammes, chat shows, sting operations, celebrity weddings and birthdays, beauty pageants, award functions, sports events, natural disasters, political crises, music channels, tarot readings, stand-up comics and competing Maitrayee Chaudhuri is at Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

The nature of programming content and reasons of its popularity are looked at. Discussed theoretically is the role of television in mediating culture, and how by its very character, television has a ‘real content’ viewer relationship with the audience than it does with cinema or any other medium. The contemporary cultural programming patterns on television prevalent today are appraised and an outline of the plausible future delineated. In a digital environment that evolves by the hour and participation of audience made spontaneous by the touch screen mobile phones, the contrast with the scenario of a decade and half years ago cannot be more telling. And yet, the success story of Surabhi, attributed to the richness and texture of its content, remains invincible. The Big Idea To take the power of learning Indian Music from the best of the Indian Gurus/Mentors to every corner of the world with ease, accessibility and quality enabled by latest technology. The story of the birth of Digital Music Gurukul The journey began in 1995 when Antakshari was launched on Zee TV. A popular game played in every Indian Household which founds its way on TV for the first time. Antakshari, apart from becoming very popular, for the first time exposed the great music talent which was hidden in common Indian middle class home. This led to launch of the first Music talent hunt show, Sa Re Ga Ma. Talent from every nook and corner of the country wanted to participate in the show. The Show gave us some of the biggest singers like Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan and many others. The trend continues till date and the creator of these shows, Sai baba telefilms and Gajendra Singh created many other shows like Raw Star, Voice of India, Sur Kshetra, Music ka Maha muqabla etc. which unearthed singers from not only the country but also across the world. These singers had great talent but they lacked formal training. The un-trained singers needed professional help to be able to hone their talent and be ready for the big world of playback singing and as an independent artist. Also, they needed training in not only singing as also in other aspects of music production which will help them to not only sing better but also to create different kind of music.
