Federer owns two titles here (2005, 2012) and is back in the final for the first time since 2012. He remains undefeated against Dimitrov in six previous meetings and has dropped only two of 16 sets against the 26-year-old. Rotterdam is of special significance for Dimitrov, who won his first career ATP match here in 2009 (d. No. 23 Berdych, l. to No. 1 Nadal in three sets). On Saturday, Dimitrov played only one set in his semi-final with David Goffin before the Belgian retired early in the second to hand the World No. 5 a spot in the finals for the first time in seven attempts. In the doubles final, No. 2 seeds Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic, who are undefeated in three tournaments this year as well as the last 21 matches going back to last season, will take on the all-French team of Pierre- Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut. Marach and Pavic won their first Grand Slam doubles title as a team last month at the Australian Open, shortly after taking titles in Doha and Auckland. Herbert and Mahut are seeking their 11th doubles title as a team and first in Rotterdam. In reclaiming the No. 1 ranking, Federer now tops the charts in four categories related to the lead position: Total Weeks at No. 1; Oldest No. 1 in the History of the ATP World Tour Rankings; Longest Gap Between First and Most Recent Day as No. 1; and Longest Gap Between Stints at No. 1. In the first semi-final of the day on Centre Court, No. 2 seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria will face No. 4 seed David Goffin of Belgium. Dimitrov holds a 5-1 head-to-head advantage over Goffin, with the Belgian's lone victory coming here last year at the quarter-final stage, when he defeated Dimitrov in three sets en route to the final. On Friday, Goffin entered the semi-finals after his quarter-final opponent, Tomas Berdych, withdrew from the tournament due to illness. Goffin and Dimitrov have yet to drop a set this week, with Goffin conceding only 8 games to Dimitrov's 28. This is Dimitrov's second trip to the Rotterdam semi-finals (he reached this stage in 2013), and he is seeking his first final appearance here. In Saturday's second semi-final, two-time champion Federer will face lucky loser Andreas Seppi for a chance at the trophy. Seppi stunned No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev in the second round, and the Italian’s fifth win in his career over a Top 5 opponent is a feat he has done before in Rotterdam – he beat then-No.

    Western & Southern Open Defending Champions Headline Doubles Fields CINCINNATI (Aug. 11, 2020) – Both the women’s and men’s defending champions are among the initial entries to play doubles at the 2020 Western & Southern Open, which will be held Aug. 20-28 at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York. The 2019 WTA doubles winners – Lucie Hradecka and Andreja Klepac – are joined by the ATP Tour champions – Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek – to headline the early entries. Other notable entries on the women’s side include the teenage pairing of Cincinnati’s 18-year-old Caty McNally and 16-year-old Coco Gauff. Dubbed “McCoco,” the duo won a pair of WTA titles in 2019 – at Washington, D.C. and Luxembourg – and reached the US Open Round of 16. Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka, who finished 2019 atop the WTA Porsche Race to Shenzen as the season’s No. 1 team, are also in the field. This decision was taken on what was the third day during which players had had to compete in very high temperatures. Games proceeded the next day without postponements or the closing of the roofs, despite a continuance of the extreme heat. A number of players have complained that the conditions were 'inhumane' and potentially placed players' health at risk. There have been calls to review the extreme heat policy and the manner in which it is implemented. Others have argued that there was no real danger and that the conditions affected all players equally. The issue remains unresolved.

    HOW CHINESE NEW MEDIA CONSTRUCT ELITE FEMALE ATHLETES: GENDER, NATIONALISM, AND INDIVIDUALISM by QINGRU XU (Under the Direction of Dr. Peggy J. Kreshel) Around the world, sport is principally organized around masculinity. Women are often afforded limited access to sports participation, situated as “others” in a male-dominated domain. This gender inequality is mirrored in sports media; selective representations have a tremendous influence on people’s perception and understanding of sport, athletes, and society. In this study, I examined media representations of two Chinese female athletes of different status—specialized athlete, Ding Ning, and professional athlete, Li Na— in China, a nation in the midst of political/economic/cultural transformation and a sports reform initiative. Analyzing stories drawn from two Chinese web portals, I focused particularly on how gender, nationalism, and collectivism/individualism entered into media representations to determine if there were differences in the portrayals of these two female athletes. The portraits that emerged were very distinctive. A textual analysis revealed significant differences in each of the three conceptual areas. A fourth theme, which I have identified as “monetary value” also emerged. Possible explanations for and implications of differences in the media portrayals of the two athletes at this particular historical moment in Chinese society were provided.
