TOP TWO SEEDS FEDERER, DIMITROV SQUARE OFF IN FINAL

 Top seed Roger Federer will play for his third Rotterdam title on Sunday against No. 2 seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria. Federer owns two titles here (2005, 2012) and is back in the final for the first time since 2012. He remains undefeated against Dimitrov in six previous meetings and has dropped only two of 16 sets against the 26-year-old. Rotterdam is of special significance for Dimitrov, who won his first career ATP match here in 2009 (d. No. 23 Berdych, l. to No. 1 Nadal in three sets). On Saturday, Dimitrov played only one set in his semi-final with David Goffin before the Belgian retired early in the second to hand the World No. 5 a spot in the finals for the first time in seven attempts.

 In the doubles final, No. 2 seeds Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic, who are undefeated in three tournaments this year as well as the last 21 matches going back to last season, will take on the all-French team of Pierre- Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut. Marach and Pavic won their first Grand Slam doubles title as a team last month at the Australian Open, shortly after taking titles in Doha and Auckland. Herbert and Mahut are seeking their 11th doubles title as a team and first in Rotterdam.

FEDERER RECLAIMS NO. 1, THREE TOP SEEDS MOVE INTO SEMI-FINALS

 Top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland secured his return to the ATP World No. 1 ranking after a three-set defeat of Robin Haase Friday at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament. In reclaiming the No. 1 ranking, Federer now tops the charts in four categories related to the lead position: Total Weeks at No. 1; Oldest No. 1 in the History of the ATP World Tour Rankings; Longest Gap Between First and Most Recent Day as No. 1; and Longest Gap Between Stints at No. 1.

 In the first semi-final of the day on Centre Court, No. 2 seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria will face No. 4 seed David Goffin of Belgium. Dimitrov holds a 5-1 head-to-head advantage over Goffin, with the Belgian's lone victory coming here last year at the quarter-final stage, when he defeated Dimitrov in three sets en route to the final. On Friday, Goffin entered the semi-finals after his quarter-final opponent, Tomas Berdych, withdrew from the tournament due to illness. Goffin and Dimitrov have yet to drop a set this week, with Goffin conceding only 8 games to Dimitrov's 28. This is Dimitrov's second trip to the Rotterdam semi-finals (he reached this stage in 2013), and he is seeking his first final appearance here.

 In Saturday's second semi-final, two-time champion Federer will face lucky loser Andreas Seppi for a chance at the trophy. Seppi stunned No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev in the second round, and the Italian’s fifth win in his career over a Top 5 opponent is a feat he has done before in Rotterdam – he beat then-No. 2 Rafael Nadal at this event in 2008. Federer holds a staggering 13-1 record against the Italian, with their last meeting nearly three years ago in Paris in 2015. The Swiss star continues to go unbeaten in 2018 after earning his 20th major title at the Australian Open.

FEDERER ONE WIN AWAY FROM NO. 1 RANKING

• Top seed and World No. 2 Roger Federer of Switzerland needs one more win at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament to reclaim the No. 1 ranking on the ATP World Tour. To get that victory, the 2005 and 2012 Rotterdam champion will have to get past the top-ranked Dutch player on the ATP World Tour, Robin Haase. Haase has reached the quarter-finals here for a second time, ten years after he reached that round for the first time. Federer, however, has never lost a set to Haase in their two previous meetings, which includes a semi- final win at the ATP Masters 1000 in Canada last year. If Federer wins, he will hit the top spot in the rankings for the first time since 4 November 2012, five years and 106 days after he last held it, which would be the longest period of time between stints at No. 1. The 36-year-old would also become the oldest player by far to hold the top ranking, eclipsing the current record held by Andre Agassi, who was No. 1 at age 33.

• 2nd-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria also aims for a semi-final spot on Friday, as he takes on 20-year-old Russian Andrey Rublev. Dimitrov and Rublev have clashed at the last two Grand Slam tournaments: the Russian claimed an upset at last year’s US Open en route to his first Grand Slam quarter-final, but the Bulgarian avenged that loss at this year’s Australian Open before advancing to the quarter-finals. Dimitrov is looking for his first final appearance in Rotterdam, with his best prior result being a semi-final showing in 2013. Rublev is playing at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament for the very first time.

• In a battle between Top 20 players, 4th seed and last year’s runner-up David Goffin of Belgium will meet 2014 champion Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, with a semi-final berth on the line. Goffin had never won a match in three tries at Rotterdam before his run last year, while Berdych has a history of excellence at this event, compiling a 21-8 win/loss record overall and reaching the final the year after his title run. Berdych leads the head-to-head by two matches to one, but in their most recent encounter, the Belgian blanked the Czech 6-0, 6-0, at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome in 2016.

• Russian qualifier Daniil Medvedev will square off against lucky loser Andreas Seppi of Italy in the remaining quarter-final. Seppi stunned No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev in the second round, and the Italian’s fifth win in his career over a Top 5 opponent propelled him into the Rotterdam quarter-finals for the third time. One of Seppi’s previous Top 5 wins came in Rotterdam as well – he beat then-No. 2 Rafael Nadal at this event in 2008. Meanwhile, Medvedev has recent experience going deep in ATP World Tour events as a qualifier. The Russian won his first title at Sydney earlier this year after successfully navigating the qualifying rounds.

FEDERER FACES FAMILIAR FOE KOHLSCHREIBER ON DAY 4

• Top seed and World No. 2 Roger Federer of Switzerland will attempt to make the quarter-finals of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Thursday when he clashes with Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber for the 13th time in their respective professional careers. The German has yet to beat Federer in 12 tries – he came closest in the first round of Halle in 2015, when the Swiss superstar needed to win a final-set tiebreak in order to prevail, en route to winning that title. A 13th consecutive win over Kohlschreiber would put Federer only one round away from claiming the World No. 1 ranking for the first time in over five years, and becoming the oldest player to rank No. 1.

• 2nd-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria will also try to claim a quarter-final spot on Day 4, facing off against Serbian Filip Krajinovic. Both players reached their maiden ATP Masters 1000 finals last year, Dimitrov winning the title in Cincinnati over Nick Kyrgios, and Krajinovic making a surprise run to the championship match in Paris before losing to Jack Sock. Dimitrov, of course, went on from there to qualify for and win the Nitto ATP Finals in London, finishing the season ranked No. 3. The Bulgarian, a semi-finalist in Rotterdam in 2013, will aim to make the quarter-finals here for the second straight year.

• Two battles between unseeded players open the day on Centre Court. First, Russia’s Andrey Rublev will square off against Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina. 20-year-old Rublev is one of the brightest of the #NextGenATP players: last year, he won his first ATP World Tour title in Umag, reached the US Open quarter-finals, and advanced to the championship match of the Next Gen ATP Finals. Dzumhur also had a strong end to 2017, winning his first two ATP World Tour titles in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Following that match, two qualifiers will meet when Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert plays Daniil Medvedev of Russia. Medvedev is also a recent first-time titlist, winning at Sydney in January. Meanwhile, Herbert has qualified in Rotterdam for the second year in a row, and last year he went all the way to the semi-finals.

• The day ends with the all-Dutch encounter between Robin Haase, the Netherlands’ top-ranked player, and wild card Tallon Griekspoor. It will be Haase’s second consecutive match against a fellow Dutch player, as the World No. 42 eliminated wild card Thiemo de Bakker in the first round. Haase is one win away from making the quarter-finals in Rotterdam for the first time since 2008, but to get there, he will have to quash the breakthrough run of 21-year-old Griekspoor. In the first round, the wild card stunned three-time Grand Slam champion and World No. 13 Stan Wawrinka in his first ever match against a Top 20 opponent, giving Griekspoor his first ATP World Tour main draw win in his third attempt.

FEDERER’S QUEST FOR NO. 1 BEGINS ON DAY 3 IN ROTTERDAM

• Top seed and World No. 2 Roger Federer takes to the court on Wednesday at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, with the World No. 1 ranking in his sights. The Swiss superstar will play his first-round match against Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans, a player he has never faced. If Federer can get past Bemelmans, then advance two more rounds into the semi-finals, he will reclaim the World No. 1 ranking for the first time since 4 November 2012. Federer won this event in 2005 and 2012, and has never lost here before the quarter- finals. Nevertheless, this is his first appearance here since 2013, and Bemelmans looked sharp in qualifying, winning his two matches without dropping a set.

• 2nd-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria also gets his Rotterdam event underway on Tuesday, as he will take on Japan’s Yuichi Sugita. Dimitrov is still looking for his first final of the year, but has a 2-0 head-to-head record against Sugita. The Japanese player did just pick up the first Top 10 win of his career at the Australian Open, with a first-round win over Jack Sock.

• The two Frenchmen who played in Sunday’s Open Sud de France final contest their first-round matches on Wednesday as well. No. 7 seed Lucas Pouille, who won the event in Montpellier, will face off against #NextGenATP player Andrey Rublev of Russia, in the first match on Centre Court. Meanwhile, on Court 1, Richard Gasquet, who lost to Pouille in the Montpellier final, will play compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert for the second straight week. Rounding out the first round will be an all-Dutch affair, as the Netherlands’ top-ranked player Robin Haase will meet wild card Thiemo de Bakker, as well as an encounter between Bosnian Damir Dzumhur and last week’s Diema Xtra Sofia Open runner-up, Marius Copil.

• Three seeded players will contest their second-round matches on a packed Wednesday. Alexander Zverev, the No. 3 seed from Germany, meets lucky loser Andreas Seppi of Italy. 20-year-old Zverev had a confidence- building win in the first round, as he beat David Ferrer for the first time in three attempts. FORMER CHAMP WAWRINKA MEETS DUTCH WILD CARD ON DAY 2

• 2015 ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament champion Stan Wawrinka kicks off his 2018 campaign on Tuesday with a first-round tilt against Dutch wild card Tallon Griekspoor. 5th-seeded Wawrinka, winner of 16 ATP World Tour singles titles, including three Grand Slam championships, is hoping to kickstart his season in Rotterdam. He has posted a 3-2 win/loss record since coming back to the Tour in January, following two left knee surgeries he underwent in August of last year. The Swiss star had a promising result at the Diema Xtra Sofia Open last week, reaching the semi-finals before losing to eventual titlist Mirza Basic. Griekspoor, on the other hand, is looking to gain more experience at ATP World Tour level. This will be only the third ATP main draw match of the 21-year-old’s career, after two first round losses last year, both of which took place in his native Netherlands (Rotterdam and s-Hertogenbosch).

• Last year’s runner-up, 4th-seeded David Goffin of Belgium also opens his tournament on Day 2, against Frenchman Benoit Paire. While Goffin ended last year with a flourish, winning two titles and reaching the championship match of the Nitto ATP Finals, defeating No. 1 Rafael Nadal and No. 2 Roger Federer en route, the World No. 7 faces a player who has given him tough tests in the past. Paire has beaten the Belgian three times in four ATP World Tour meetings, including in a final-set tiebreak in Metz just last year.

• Additionally, No. 9 seed Gilles Muller of Luxembourg takes on Russian qualifier Daniil Medvedev, in a match between the last two winners of the ATP World Tour event in Sydney. Medvedev came through the qualifying rounds to win that event last month for his debut singles title, while Muller also picked up his debut title there in 2017, after five previous unsuccessful ATP singles final appearances.

• Another wild card will follow Griekspoor on Centre Court, when 17-year-old Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime meets Filip Krajinovic of Serbia. The #NextGenATP player from Montreal will make his ATP World Tour main draw debut, coming up against Krajinovic, who reached his first ATP Masters 1000 final in Paris last year, but has only played one match so far this year due to persistent injuries. 10 THINGS TO WATCH IN ROTTERDAM

1) First 500 of Season: This is the first of 13 ATP World Tour 500 tournaments of the season. The 45th anniversary of the popular Dutch indoor tournament features seven of the Top 20 in the ATP Rankings, led by World No. 2 Roger Federer who will return to No. 1 if he reaches the semi-finals.

2) Roger Eyes No. 1: Wild card and two-time Rotterdam champion (2005, 2012) Federer is looking to return to No. 1 for the first time since Nov. 4, 2012. If the Swiss superstar gets to No. 1 on Feb. 19, the gap of 5 years, 106 days will be the longest between stints at No. 1. At 36, he would also become the oldest No. 1, replacing Andre Agassi (33) who held the top spot on Sept. 7, 2003.

3) Roger Returns: This will be Federer’s first time back in Rotterdam since 2013 when he reached the quarter-finals. He is 23-6 lifetime and he’s never lost before the QFs. This is also Federer’s first tournament since capturing his 20th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open last month.

4) Title Contenders: Federer will be challenged by No. 2 seed Grigor Dimitrov, No. 3 Alexander Zverev, No. 4 David Goffin, No. 5 Stan Wawrinka, No. 6 Tomas Berdych and No. 7 Lucas Pouille. No. 8 and defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga withdrew due to a hamstring injury. Wawrinka won the title in 2015 and Berdych lifted the trophy in 2014. Another former winner, Martin Klizan (2016), qualified into the main draw on Sunday.

5) Grigor Back in Action: Dimitrov opened the first month of action with a SF in Brisbane and QF at the Australian Open. He is 8-6 in Rotterdam with his best result the SFs in 2013. He won his first career ATP match in the Dutch tourney in 2009 (d. No. 23 Berdych, l. to No. 1 Nadal in three sets).

6) Berdych Turnaround: Berdych started off with a 2-5 record in Rotterdam but since 2011 he has improved with a 17-3 mark, winning the 2014 title, reaching the 2015 final and two SFs (2012, ’17).

7) Ferrer Returns: David Ferrer returns to Rotterdam for the first time since 2011. He is 2-0 lifetime against 1R opponent No. 3 A. Zverev, who reached the QFs in Rotterdam two years ago.

8) Dutch Title Hopes: Top Dutchman Robin Haase takes on countryman Thiemo de Bakker in the 1R. Both players are looking to improve their results on home soil. De Bakker is 3-8 and Haase 4-9. The last Dutchman to win the Rotterdam title was Jan Siemerink 20 years ago.

9) Wild Cards: Besides Federer, the other wild cards are Dutchmen de Bakker and Tallon Griekspoor, who is looking for his first career ATP World Tour win (0-2). Canadian 17-year-old #NextGenATP star Felix Auger-Aliassime is making his ATP World Tour main draw debut.

10) Doubles Draw: Top seeds are Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo, No. 2 seeds are Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic, who are 14-0 this season with three titles and unbeaten in their last 21 matches going back to last season.
