Zwar wurden sie im Laufe der Zeit mit individuellen Biografien versehen, doch verbergen sich hinter ihnen stets wechselnde Musiker. Nach mehreren Singles, zwei Alben und zahlreichen Videoclips gibt der Film von Ceri Levy nun den Blick auf die realen Personen hinter den animierten Figuren frei. Sieben Jahre lang hat sich der Regisseur, der mit Damon Albarn seit langem befreundet ist, in dem Paralleluniversum, das sich um die Gorillaz inzwischen aufgebaut hat, für seinen Film frei bewegen können.
