Computed Tomography at San Diego Zoo Global

Featured Speaker: Dr. Matthew Kinney, Associate Veterinarian at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

Matt received his doctorate of veterinary medicine from the University of Wisconsin in 2010, followed by a one-year internship at an animal hospital in South Florida. He then completed a three-year zoological medicine residency program jointly run by UC Davis, the Sacramento Zoo, and San Diego Zoo Global, during which time he had the opportunity to work at both the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. In 2014 Matt accepted a position as Staff Veterinarian at the Saint Louis Zoo, a position he held until 2016 when he returned to San Diego as the Associate Veterinarian at the Safari Park.

Matt serves as the Veterinary Advisor on a number of species-specific zoological committees, particularly those overseeing pelicans and endangered Hawaiian birds. He is also the author of numerous publications in a wide variety of professional journals and has represented San Diego Zoo Global in presentations nationally and internationally.

Program: Computed Tomography (CT) is an imaging modality that uses multiple x-rays to provide a cross sectional representation of the body. Following a generous donation in December 2017, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and San Diego Zoo purchased a computed tomography unit at each campus.

This presentation will focus on how this CT unit is able to accommodate the diverse collection of animals at San Diego Zoo Global and how this imaging modality has improved the veterinary care we provide to the collection. Case examples and CT images obtained over the past 2 years will be used to demonstrate how this technology is put to use in our practice and the positive animal health and welfare outcomes that have been recognized.
