12 ZOO NEWS 2020 VOL. 25 NO.4 VOL. 25 NO.4 ZOO NEWS 2020 13 SUPPORT THE ZOO

A Special Message to Our Members and Most Loyal Supporters:

This is the time of the year we all typically start to plan for the holidays and here at the Zoo, we make our annual ask of you to remember us as you start to think about any year-end gifts you make to the charitable organizations near a dear to your heart.

As we all know, this year is different. How this year affected us is very different for each person and each family. At Fresno Chaffee Zoo, we are still waiting to learn the complete results of this year on us and hope that the worst is behind all of us.

What we do know is that the Zoo was closed for 89 days during what is usually our most profitable time of the year. We know we lost approximately $4 million of budgeted revenue during the closure and at least another $1 million since re-opening. Until we are allowed to be open at full capacity and are able to run all of our programs and services, the loss will continue to grow.

As we reflect on this year, it is important to find the good and there definitely was good for Fresno Chaffee Zoo. Thanks to a PPP loan and the hard work of our executive team, we did not have to incur layoffs. Our ENTIRE team worked tirelessly to take care of the Zoo for those 89 days we were not allowed to see guests. Teams like Education and Events figured out how to pivot their normal programs toward our newly robust virtual world and we all re-thought our business and mission in times we couldn’t be together in person. We cut expenses where we could, we are also lucky enough to have some reserves to rely on and, last but not least, a wonderfully generous bequest we are beyond grateful for.

What 2020 means for our fundraising department is that for the first time since Measure Z passed. We aren’t asking for donations to help make our Zoo even better we are asking for donations because we need them to help pay the bills.

That is what we are asking for this year- for you to help us Fill the Gap left in the wake of the pandemic. Our goal is to raise $2 million by the end of 2021. Thanks to donations that you have sent over the past few months and our first (hopefully only) very successful Virtual Safari Night, we are on our way.

As you think about your year-end gifts this year, we ask that you consider the Zoo now more than ever. While the larger gifts help us reach the goal faster; it is equally impactful when a lot of people give a little. Please know, every dollar truly makes a difference.

Gratefully,

Your friends at Fresno Chaffee Zoo
