Desde que en el siglo XVII el italiano Marcelo Malpighi (Crevalcore, 1628 - Roma, 1694) descubriera la relación causa-efecto entre un insecto y su agalla, numerosos naturalistas y científicos han centrado sus esfuerzos en estas estructuras vegetales, hasta hacer de la Cecidología (Ciencia que se ocupa del estudio de las agallas de las plantas) una ciencia de ámbito multidisciplinar que se asienta en estudios ecológicos, morfológicos y estructurales, etiológicos, taxonómicos, faunísticos, histológicos, fisiológicos, genéticos, etc. En este estudio se hará un repaso de que son las agallas y de los distintos estudios que pueden realizarse a partir de las agallas producidas por los Cynipidae (Hymenoptera). Since the Italian Marcelo Malpighi (Crevalcore, 1628 - Roma, 1694) discovered the cause and effect relationship between an insect and its gall in the XVII century, many naturalists and scientists have focused their efforts in these plant structures to make for the Cecidology (science that deals with the study of plants galls) a multidisciplinary science based on different branches: ecologic, morphological, structural, etiologic, taxonomic, faunistic, histologic, physiologic, genetic, etc. In this work a review of what the galls are and the diverse studies which can be carried out from the Cynipidae (Hymenoptera) galls is made. ZooKeys 63 : 1 – 53 . doi: 10.3897/zookeys.63.565 Abstract Based on the study of 12,000+ specimens, an annotated checklist of 28 genera and 225 species of Micro- gastrinae braconids from Canada and Alaska is provided, increasing by 50% the number of species for the region. Th e genera Distatrix, Iconella, Protomicroplitis and Pseudapanteles for Canada, and Diolcogaster for Alaska are recorded for the fi rst time; all but Iconella and Protomicroplitis represent the northernmost extension of their known distribution. Eight new species are described: Apanteles huberi sp.n., A. jennif- erae sp.n., A. masmithi sp.n., A. roughleyi sp.n., A. samarshalli sp.n., Distatrix carolinae sp.n., Pseudap- anteles gouleti sp.n., and Venanus heberti sp.n. For the more diverse genera, especially Cotesia, Microplitis, Apanteles, Dolichogenidea and Glyptapanteles, many more species are expected to be found.

Out of the 28 genera of the subfamily Microgastrinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) present in the country, 13 genera were studied and 16 species were identified as potential candidates to be included in the Species Candidate Lists of COSEWIC (The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada). For every selected species a brief summary of its broad geographical distribution is provided, with detailed and in many cases new information of its distribution and collecting dates in Canada, hosts (Lepidoptera) if known, and color pictures of all wasp species. A preliminary assessment is made using Prioritization Criteria developed by COSEWIC, and some general recommendations are made based in those analyses. Phylogenetic relationships among the genera of the large braconid wasp subfamily Microgastrinae were explored using DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit (16S), nuclear large ribosomal subunit (28S) and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase (COI) genes, along with morpho- logical characters, both new and from previous studies. The taxonomic history of this group of wasps is reviewed, along with a critique of previous phylogenetic studies on the group. Molecular data were sampled from forty-six species repre- senting twenty-six genera of microgastrines, plus three species representing the close outgroup taxa Cardiochilinae and Miracinae. Some 2300 base pairs of aligned sequence were obtained per taxon from the three genes. In addition, fifty-three morphological characters were coded for all known genera, including two undescribed genera, except Semionis Nixon (known from only a single male type specimen). Relationships among several groups of genera are clarified and challenge some major assumptions made in earlier classifications. In particular, it is clear that dependence on one or a few major morphological character systems oversimplifies relationships, and can lead to misleading results. Despite the large amount of data analysed, basal divergences within the subfamily remain poorly resolved and essentially unsupported in any rigorous statistical sense.
