As the official residence of the First Minister of Scotland, it is here that I host official guests from this country and overseas on behalf of the nation. Bute House is also the meeting place of the Scottish Cabinet and the venue for official functions including meetings, receptions, lunches and dinners. Within these walls, I get to bring together people from all walks of life through meetings with business leaders, public service employees and the voluntary sector, and receptions to celebrate all aspects of Scottish society and success. Every Christmas, I even get to welcome youngsters from around the country for an annual children’s party. All year round Bute House performs a dual role of both residence and place of work for the First Minister. All four of my predecessors lived here too, and their portraits line the wall of the staircase leading to the Cabinet Room. Before the Scottish Parliament was reconvened in 1999, Bute House was home to eight different Secretaries of State for Scotland from 1970 onwards. Many of the key conversations and decisions in recent Scottish political history have taken place within these walls. Even without its modern role, however, Bute House would be of significant historic interest. It was built in the late 18th century, and is at the heart of one of the great masterpieces of Georgian architecture – the north side of Robert Adam’s Charlotte Square.

    The Scottish Nebraskan Newsletter of the Prairie Scots Chief’s Message Summer 2021 Issue I am delighted that summer is upon us finally! For a while there I thought winter was making a comeback. I hope this finds you all well and excited to get back to a more normal lifestyle. We are excited as we will finally get to meet in person for our Annual Meeting and Gathering of the Clans in August and hope you all make an effort to come. We haven't seen you all in over a year and a half and we are looking forward to your smiling faces and a chance to talk with all of you. Covid-19 has been rough on all of us; it has been a horrible year plus. But the officers of the Society have been meeting on a regular basis trying hard to keep the Society going. Now it is your turn to come and get involved once again. After all, a Society is not a society if we don't gather! Make sure to mark your calendar for August 7th, put on your best Tartan and we will see you then.     Chapter Eight The Stones of the Southern Highlands Moving on from the stones of the Lowlands and the Southern Uplands, the last stone encountered, the Wallace Putting Stone could easily have been included in this section and certainly when standing on Sheriffmuir, the expanse of the Southern Highlands to the north are so close and almost tangible. There are no distinguishing boundaries for the stones in this section and as a base either the towns of Callander or Aberfeldy should be considered. All but one of the stones are located in the ancient county of Perthshire although some through boundary changes are now in Stirlingshire but regardless, in the days when the Gaelic was spoken and stones were lifted this was entirely Perthshire. The majority of these stones are hemmed in by one of the major trunk roads to the Highlands and the A9 gives access to many of the stones mentioned. If making a tour of the stones, and including the Wallace Putting Stone, an almost oval loop allows testing them all within a day without too much travelling by car. From the Wallace Putting Stone it is 40 mins to the Sadlin Mare and then less than 30 mins to the Menzies Stone. From here it is 30 mins to the famed Bodach in Glen Lyon and 60 mins later the Ardvorlich Stone followed by a short 15 min drive to Balquhidder for the Puterach. This circuit, which has now been carried out on a more than a few occasions has been referred to as the “Perthshire Loop” and any stone lifting visit to Scotland would probably commence on the same lines.
