Bridges ABSTRACT Laurel Wilt Disease (LWD) has caused severe mortality in native Persea species of the southeastern United States since it was first detected in 2003. This study was designed to document the range-wide population impacts to LWD, as well as the patterns of mortality and regeneration in Persea ecosystems. I used Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data from the U.S. Forest Service to estimate Persea borbonia (red bay) populations from 2003 to 2011 to see if any decline could be observed since the introduction of LWD causal agents. -
Outplanting of the Endangered Pondberry
OUTPLANTING OF THE ENDANGERED PONDBERRY Margaret S. Devall, Nathan M. Schiff, and Stephanie A. Skojac1 Abstract—Pondberry [Lindera melissifolia (Walt) Blume, Lauraceae] is an endangered shrub that occurs in seasonally flooded wetlands in the Southeastern United States. We established new pondberry populations as an aid in conserving the species, whose distribution and abundance have been affected by habitat destruction and alteration. We dug equal numbers of young male and female pondberry stems from a natural population, planted them in pots, and translocated them to five protected locations in the field. After 1 year, 69 percent of the plants survived, with male and female plants surviving equally well. More than 90 percent of the surviving plants had stems that increased in height, although the height of the tallest stems decreased. Many of the plants produced new stems, but some older stems died during the year. Most of the present pondberry habitat is surrounded by agricultural fields, which significantly limits dispersal. This study shows that pondberry can be successfully outplanted, in efforts to assure survival of the species. Blume (Lauraceae), growing in Huntsville, Alabama, was isolated by hydrodistillation. This plant, known commonly as spicebush, was used in native American traditional medicine, and is a host plant of the spicebush swallowtail butterfly, Papilio troilus. The chemical composition of the leaf oil of L. benzoin was determined by GC–MS. The most abundant essential oil components were 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (42.9%), β-caryophyllene (7.7%), bicyclogermacrene (5.1%), δ-cadinene (4.9%), and (E)-nerolidol (4.8%). After decades of decline, forest area increased 3 percent. Pine plantation acreage increased substantially while acreage in natural pine stands decreased. Softwood inventory was down 5 percent, with growth also declining. Loblolly pine volume exceeded that of shortleaf pine for the first time in Arkansas his- tory. The outlook for hardwood resources is positive. Inventory and growth have increased, and loss of bottomland hardwood acreage appeared to be at a standstill. Spreng.; Laurales: Laura- ceae) sawdust and various nutrients were tested for rearing Xyleborus glabratus Eichoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) in vitro. Comparison of 2 media, modified and stan- dard, adapted from Biedermann et al. (2009) showed that the more solid consistency of the modified medium resulted in greater rates of successful brood production in cultures. A 2-layered medium structure with a nutrient rich lower layer and a nutrient poor upper layer proved to be superior to a single-layered structure. Using a 2-layered structure, 72.5% of foundresses successfully produced brood, which was similar to or greater than success rates of X. glabratus under natural field conditions. The most successful media recipes used finely ground wood from redbay, but some successful brood production also occurred when wood from pondberry (Lindera melissifolia ) (Walter) Blume; Laurales: Lauraceae) and California bay laurel (Umbellularia californica (Hook. & Arn.) GENERAL INFORMATION A. Methodology used to complete the review: In conducting this 5-year review, we relied on the best available information pertaining to historical and contemporary distributions, life histories, genetics, habitats, disturbances, and potential threats of this species. We announced initiation of this review and requested information in a published Federal Register notice with a 60-day comment period (75 FR 18233). In an effort to acquire the most current information available, various sources were solicited, including data housed at State natural heritage programs, internet searches, and knowledgeable individuals associated with academia, and Federal, State, and non-governmental conservation organizations. Specific sources included the final rule listing this species under the Endangered Species Act; the Recovery Plan; the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (hereafter referred to as “the Service” or “Service”) Biological Opinion on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s proposed Yazoo Backwater Reformulation Project; peer reviewed scientific publications; unpublished field observations by the Service, U.S. Forest Service, state and other experienced biologists; unpublished studies and survey reports; and notes and communications from other qualified individuals.
