I want to honour your work, your life in the past 12 months and your service to others in 2018. I invite you to bring to mind something that you experienced that has made you more aware of life, more aware of others and perhaps even made life more meaningful. It may have been a quiet job you did for another and no one knows how much it helped. The fact that no one saw it does not take away from the compassion and care that you showed. Thank you.

Perhaps frenetic times gave way to peace...

Work, travel and expectations came and went. Or it may be that you took a quiet moment in the midst of the frenetic month and noticed a purple Jacaranda tree in October 2018, heard a bird call at dawn or the felt the quiet breeze on your face…and life ‘in the moment’ was ok.

Or life went awry...

Or you may have searched for meaning or hope and they remained elusive especially when things became overwhelming, went awry or loss or disappointment arose. Then along comes Christmas and NY with all their expectations, busy-ness and sometimes complex- ity. reflects on ways to deal with the stress of the Christmas season and the anxiety of daily life in general. In his letter “Rejoice and Be Glad”, he puts his finger on the dangers of a frenetic quest for happiness: there is “the presence of constantly new gadgets, the excitement of travel and an endless array of consumer goods.” At times they can leave no room for the quiet, peaceful voice to be heard. He points to God’s voice.

“We are overwhelmed by words, by superficial pleasures and by an increasing din, filled not by joy but rather by the discontent of those whose lives have lost meaning.

How can we fail to realize the need to stop this rat race and to recover the personal space needed to carry on a heartfelt dia- logue with God? Finding that space may prove elusive or pain- ful but it is always fruitful. Sooner or later, we have to face our true selves and let the Lord enter (adapted).” 1

My hope., my prayer is that you find peace, joy and rest leading to and at Christmas and become refreshed for what lies ahead in 2019.

Blessings, Deacon Peter
