Click or tap here to go straight to TDN Europe. While several major racetracks in the U.S. continue to debate what is the best set of rules to put in place regarding what jockeys can and cannot do to encourage their horses, Woodbine has embarked on an experiment that limits what jockeys can do with their whips and may be seen as a blueprint for the rest of the industry to follow. Starting Oct. 18, experimental rules, which will be in place up to closing day, Dec. 15, were put in place that allow only for underhanded whipping. The riders are no longer allowed to cock their whips and reach back and strike their mounts. Nor can they strike the horse in the belly or flank area. Whether or not the rule will become permanent in 2020 will be decided by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), but with the experiment so far not encountering any serious problems, it is likely that the new regulations are here to stay. The Woodbine experiment is part of an effort throughout North America to change the perception of racing and to show the public, animal rights activists and politicians that the sport believes the safety of the animal is a top priority and is intent on making substantive changes. The recently formed Safety Coalition, which includes most of the major tracks in the U.S., has also declared its intentions to deal with the whip issue, but has yet to spell out specifics, only saying that it will look to limit crop use. Woodbine isn=t tipping its hand when it comes to what recommendations the track is likely to make to the AGCO regarding whipping rules for the 2020 meet. AWhat we need to do is take a deep dive and have a chance to review all the data from the pilot,@ Woodbine VP of Thoroughbred Racing Jonathan Zammit said. It=s a bit premature at this point to comment on what direction this might go.@ The data available so far has not revealed anything that suggests the experiment is not working. There have been no apparent problems with safety during the races and the handle has remained steady, showing that the bettors haven=t adjusted their wagering habits during the experiment. AFrom a track operator=s perspective, we have a sample size, but not a full sample size,@ Zammit said. AIt has been a change and we realize how big a change this has been for the jockeys and we=re very thankful they are participating and allowing us to evaluate this pilot program. U.S. tracks adopt the Woodbine rules. In California, the idea of banning the whip all together has been put forward. Either way, a new set of rules will likely not be well received by the riders. At Woodbine, at least one jockey believes he has no choice other than to adapt, change and move on. AI=d be a little disappointed if the new rules become permanent,@ Moran said. AIt looks like they probably will be. Personally, I would have preferred them allowing a lower number (of times a horse can be whipped) and making sure we have to give them more time to respond between smacks instead of changing our style of hitting. But they are the ones who make the rules and we will have to adjust to them.@

By Emma Berry NEWMARKET, UK--The opening session of the four-day Tattersalls December Foal Sale proved to be something of a showcase for first-season sires with six of the 10 top-priced weanlings of the day being the offspring of newcomers to the sales ring. A market which can be harshly unforgiving of stallions who have had only one crop of runners can be equally welcoming of those yet to have any perceived blemish on their stud careers. One stallion who will not be struggling for mares in 2020 is Darley's Night Of Thunder (Ire), the leading first-season sire with runners this year who provided the leading filly of the day (lot 366), bought by pinhooker Jamie Railton at 65,000gns. The chestnut filly was consigned by Genesis Green Stud for breeder Watch Me after winning the Coronation S. | Racing Post Cranford Bloodstock and is out of Harlequin Girl (GB) (Where Or When {Ire}), a half-sister to G2 Gimcrack S. winner Blaine (GB) (Avonbridge {GB}). IN TDN AMERICA TODAY Bringing the same price and heading the colts' division was lot 326, from the first crop of El Kabeir, Yeomanstown Stud's THE WHIP EXPERIMENT 7-year-old son of Scat Daddy. I've been lucky buying on the first day in the past." when trained by Jean-Claude Rouget. She was highly-rated but Scarlett Knipe routinely brings a unique mixed draft of Flat and had never won any black type. Chris Wall then trained her for National Hunt foals to the me and she was third in the December Sale under the Kilvington Fillies' S." Phoenix Thoroughbreds first became involved in the ownership of Sands Of Mali at the beginning of 2019. He will be offered as a horse out of training.

SANDS OF MALI TO BE OFFERED AT TATTS The G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint winner Sands Of Mali (Fr) (Panis) is a late addition to the Tattersalls December Mare Sale catalogue for next week. The 4-year-old colt, who raced initially for The Cool Silk Partnership but has this year been campaigned by a partnership which includes Phoenix Thoroughbreds, will be sold on Monday as a wildcard entry lot 1621A to dissolve the partnership. His late entry in the sale follows allegations made in an American court as to the alleged involvement of Phoenix Thoroughbreds' founder Amer Abdulaziz Salman in the OneCoin cryptocurrency scam. Originally bought as a yearling by Con Marnane for i20,000, Sands Of Mali was acquired by The Cool Silk Partnership through agent Matt Coleman for ,75,000 at the Tattersalls Ascot Breeze-up Sale. His five victories in 16 starts include four group wins and he has also been runner-up in the G1 Commonwealth Cup. Sands Of Mali | Racing Post

Cont. and perhaps her win in the GIII San Simeon S. was one of her most poignant wins given that she was coming back off of a 154-day break from racing after being badly burned in the fire at the stables at San Luis Rey racecourse. Belvoir Bay was also second to Blue Point (Ire) in Dubai and finished off her racing career at this year's Breeders' Cup. She was sold for $1.5-million at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale and hopefully she can pass her tenacity onto her own progeny. Lennie Peacock died in 2018 but Path Of Peace and Belvoir Bay have both paid tribute to her contribution to the breeding industry. Path Of Peace's Muhaarar yearling colt was sold to Shadwell at this year's Book 2 at Tattersalls and, with a 2020 mating plan to Equiano to look forward to, there is every chance that we will be hearing more about Path Of Peace in the years to come.

As breeders, we need to be multi-skilled. We need to be part Q&A WITH GUNTHER artist, part scientist, part farmer, part psychologist and even perhaps part wizard! I say the latter in jest but we almost need a crystal ball at times. For example, if breeding commercially (which we do), it is necessary to try to figure out and make decisions now regarding what the market will find appealing in two years time, which is no easy feat. At Glennwood, we try to keep our eye trained on the end game--breeding the best racehorses possible, not just top sales horses--so it becomes a balancing act when trying to survive in the commercial market as well. One of the ways that art and science come together is during the making of mating plans, an inherently creative process to which it is possible to apply a little science in the form of facts and figures. The roles of psychologist and farmer come in when trying to keep horses alive, happy and thriving B sounds simple right? But in reality this endeavour is enormously challenging. Finally, these horses have to end up in the right hands during their Trophy presentation following Without Parole=s Royal Ascot win-- racing careers.
