  • Research Centres of Charles University
Charles University Introduction When the Bohemian King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV established a university in the capital city of his kingdom in 1348, which was the first university north of the Alps and east of the French borders, it was his greatest wish that as soon as possible, it would reach the quality of the universities as in Bologna, Oxford, and Paris, which were the best establishments offering a higher education in Europe at that time. It is our great obligation and task to fulfil this historic legacy, to assure the highest quality and integrity of university education, and to contribute to the cultivation and development of learning and culture in the Czech Republic, in Europe, and in the world in general. Charles University is a leading world-class university. Its top priority is therefore not only a constant emphasis on improving the quality of scientific and pedagogic activities, but also on the thorough fulfilment of its “third role”. This is why Charles University is a key subject participating in the formation of the Czech public’s positive view of national cultural values of learning and of critical and creative thinking. A conceptual masterplan for Rybníčky, Prague 10 Kameliya Staneva 2nd Year Undergraduate (United Kingdom) Atelier Achten-Pavlíček-Nováková, summer semester 2019-2020 Faculty of Architecture Czech Technical University in Prague The goal of this Design studio is to research cutting-edge technology and principles which are suitable for delivering a future where there is a limited amount of cars. This being said, the ideal car would be autonomous and electrical, often shared and always trying to be better utilised. Drones, AI and other technologies can be used to improve the human experience in the highly urbanising environment. Aiming to minimize the usage of personal cars using harmful fuels, there has to be a change in how our cities and neighbourhoods are structured. Currently, developments are usually in favour of cars, neglecting pedestrian movement, micro-mobility and public transportation. Cars take up a lot of space: commercial and personal parking lots, roads, gas stations, car repair services. These are often more frequently found in the suburbs of cities, where land is abundant and cheaper. Suburban residents often find themselves in need to use the car. There is unreliable public transport, not enough desired services nearby. That is why we need to tackle the urban fabric to deal with excess cars, to achieve a future with no cars. Endorsing public trans- portation and local micro-mobility, the transit-oriented development will help Rybníčky neighbourhood and Skalka station with achieving centralization and densification. This will result in an upsurge in pedestrians and people using micro-mobility means for trans- portation, employment due to opening of new services, less space used for vehicles, more space for people.

Under Communism, Czech theatre had been highly political through veiled protests against the system of power. After 1989, Czech theatre began moving into spheres of commodification and tourism. How the ELTs in Prague negotiated their place in a shifting society reveals a performance of identity. The ELTs tracked the turning points in Czech post-revolutionary history of the 1990s. The history of the ELTs has been constructed through personal and telephone interviews and emails, as well as reviews, articles, manuscripts and production videotapes.

(May 2009) David Zdenek Chroust, B.A., Kent State University; M.L.S., Kent State University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Chester Dunning This dissertation examines elite and popular consciousness among Czech speakers in America during their mass migration from Bohemia and Moravia, the two Habsburg crownlands that became the largest part of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. Between 1860 and 1910, their numbers increased tenfold to almost a quarter-million, as recorded in the United States census, and to over a half-million with their children. That was almost one-twelfth of their population in Bohemia and Moravia. In the same half- century, a stable group of men made Czech-language journalism and publishing in America. They included Karel Jonáš in Wisconsin, Václav Šnajdr in Cleveland, František Boleslav Zdrůbek and August Geringer in Chicago, and Jan Rosický in Omaha.
