It was on wing almost throughout the year breeds with high frequency during the periods of monsoon and post monsoon seasons. Studies were conducted during January 2014 to December 2014 at Sri Lankamalleswara Reserve forest study area in the Eastern Ghats of Southern Andhra Pradesh. The growth from egg to adult was 19 - 22 days with four larval instar stages. There was no dormancy stage in the life history. Short life cycle and high success development of life stages suggest the production of more number of broods yearly. Besides, the population index of Chilades lajus on same ovipostion host plant leaves was discussed. Much has been written on Nabokov's views on evolution, the origin of species, and, es pecially, mimicry in nature. Nabokov scholars hold a diversity of opinions, veering from defending Nabokov's heterodox beliefs about evolution to criticizing him for not fully ac cepting the modern evolutionary synthesis developed in the i93os and i94os in Europe and North America. Nabokov the scientist was maybe a little old-fashioned in his methodology, even for his time, concerned mainly with morphological systematics. He evinced a profound dislike for applying statistics to his science. Nabokov furiously rejected a statistical criticism by F. Martin Brown of his work on "scale rows," a method he invented for the study of ple bejine butterflies.1 His lack of appreciation of applied mathematical theories of evolution probably ensured that he could not form a strong opinion about the works of Ronald Fisher, J. B. S. Haldane, and Sewall Wright, the founders of the modern synthesis of Mendelian ge netics and Darwinian natural selection. However, Nabokov would certainly not have been alone among biologists of his time in his contempt for the modernization of biological sci ence and, in particular, of mathematical or genetic approaches to systematics.2 Nabokov certainly understood much better the later part of the modern synthesis on species concepts and speciation, beginning in 1937 and continuing in the early i94os largely by another triumvirate. -

Species Report for Leona’s Little Blue Butterfly (Philotiella leona) Photo credit: Sarina Jepsen; The Xerces Society U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service May 20, 2015 Species Report for Leona’s Little Blue Butterfly (Philotiella leona) Purpose The purpose of this species report is to provide the best available scientific and commercial information about Leona’s little blue (Philotiella leona) and its habitat. The information within this report will be part of our biological basis for any potential listing, recovery, or consultation recommendations under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 as amended (Act), (16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.). Executive Summary On May 12, 2010, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife (Service) received a petition from the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, Dr. David McCorkle of Western Oregon University, and Oregon Wild to list the Leona’s little blue butterfly under the Act. On August 17, 2011, the Service published in the Federal Register a positive 90-day finding stating that the petition presented substantial scientific or commercial information indicating that listing the Leona’s little blue butterfly may be warranted (76 FR 50971). As a result, we are initiating a status review of the species to determine if Leona’s little blue butterfly is warranted for listing under the Act. The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and Oregon Wild filed a notice of intent to sue on March 7, 2013, for failure to issue a 12-month finding on whether listing the Leona’s little blue butterfly is warranted under the Act. On July 31, 2014, the court ordered the Service to issue a 12-month finding for the Leona’s little blue butterfly by June 30, 2015. -

Larvae hatch after 4 —5 d. Caterpillars feed on young foliage. There are4 larval instars, larval development lasts 22 d. The green caterpillars are very flat and hairy. L3 and L4 larvae have a yellow middorsal band. Caterpillars lack a dorsal nectary organ and tentacle organs and are not attended by ants. The girdled pupae are likewise hairy and are not attractive to ants. The butterfly emerges after a pupal period of 8 d. Both larvae and pupae are able to produce substrate-borne vibrations when disturbed. The observations on C. roxus are discussed with respect to phylogenetic and ecological implica tions. Die Eiablage erfolgt einzeln in der Mittagszeit an jungen Blät tern und Ranken einer Liane (Familie Rhamnaceae, eine genauere Bestim mung war mangels Blüten bislang unmöglich). Aus den gelben Eiern (Durchmesser 0,5 mm) schlüpfen nach4 —5 Tagen die Jungraupen. -

However, delineations between higher taxonomic units can be based on the relative ages of different lineages and ⁄or the level of morphological differentiation. In this paper, we address these issues in considering the species-rich Polyommatus section, a group of butterflies whose taxonomy has been highly controversial. We propose a taxonomy-friendly, flexible temporal scheme for higher-level classification. Using molecular data from nine markers (6666 bp) for 104 representatives of the Polyommatus section, representing all but two of the 81 described genera ⁄ subgenera and five outgroups, we obtained a complete and well resolved phylogeny for this clade. We use this to revise the systematics of the Polyommatus blues, and to define criteria that best accommodate the described genera within a phylogenetic framework.
