The lepidoptera of Ceylon 1: 81 (190 pp.). London. Type-species: Hesperia theophrastus Fabricius, by original designation. The genus Tarucus belongs to the Family Lycaenidae Leach, 1815; Subfamily Polyommatinae Swainson, 1827; Tribe Polyommatini Swainson, 1827; Subtribe incertae sedis. The other genera in the Subtribe incertae sedis in the Afrotropical Region are Cupidopsis, Pseudonacaduba, Catochrysops, Lampides, Uranothauma, Cacyreus, Harpendyreus, Leptotes, Cyclyrius, Tuxentius, Zintha, Zizeeria, Zizina, Actizera, Zizula, Brephidium, Oraidium, Azanus, Eicochrysops, Euchrysops, Orachrysops, Lepidochrysops, Thermoniphas and Oboronia. Tarucus (Pierrots) is a genus of 23 species, which is well represented in the Afrotropical, Oriental and Palaearctic Regions. There are 12 Afrotropical species, three of which extend extralimitally. *Tarucus balkanica (Freyer, 1843) Balkan Pierrot Lycaena balkanica Freyer, 1843. Extralimitally in Algeria, Europe (south-east), Arabia (east and central), Balkans, Asia Minor, Middle East, Syria, Iran, North Africa. Subspecies nigra (Bethune-Baker, 1918) is in India (north- west), Pakistan, Sri Lanka. Habitat: Very arid savanna. Early stages: Nothing published. Chapter 10 The Butterflies and Skippers (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) of Angola: An Updated Checklist Luís F. Mendes, A. Bivar-de-Sousa, and Mark C. Williams Abstract Presently, 792 species/subspecies of butterflies and skippers (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) are known from Angola, a country with a rich diversity of habitats, but where extensive areas remain unsurveyed and where systematic collecting pro- grammes have not been undertaken. Only three species were known from Angola in 1820. From the beginning of the twenty-first century, many new species have been described and more than 220 faunistic novelties have been assigned. As a whole, of the 792 taxa now listed for Angola, 57 species/subspecies are endemic and almost the same number are known to be near-endemics, shared by Angola and by one or another neighbouring country. The Nymphalidae are the most diverse family. The Lycaenidae and Papilionidae have the highest levels of endemism. A revised check- list with taxonomic and ecological notes is presented and the development of knowl- edge of the superfamily over time in Angola is analysed. Biodiversity Observations http://bo.adu.org.za An electronic journal published by the Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town The scope of Biodiversity Observations consists of papers describing observations about biodiversity in general, including animals, plants, algae and fungi. This includes observations of behaviour, breeding and flowering patterns, distributions and range extensions, foraging, food, movement, measurements, habitat and colouration/plumage variations. Biotic interactions such as pollination, fruit dispersal, herbivory and predation fall within the scope, as well as the use of indigenous and exotic species by humans. Observations of naturalised plants and animals will also be considered. Biodiversity Observations will also publish a variety of other interesting or relevant biodiversity material: reports of projects and conferences, annotated checklists for a site or region, specialist bibliographies, book reviews and any other appropriate material. Larsen * & Rob Plowes ** We decided to go up to have a look at the spring butterfly fauna in the Tswapong Hills, near Palapye, in eastern Botswana, during the period 22-24 September, 1991. From previous visits we knew the hills to be of entomological interest, but they much exceeded our expectations. The Tswapong Hills stretch from Palapye almost to the RSA border. From a distance they do not look like much, but they are a real set of low mountains, and very different from most of Botswana. Their geology differs from the surroundings, being Precambrian quartzitic sandstones, surrounded by Karoo sediment mudflats. Their vegetation is much more dense and diverse than anywhere close by, not least the Mopane woodlands which dominate much of the mudflats. The trip up from Gaborone is 350 km through the flat, monotonous, parched fringes of the Kalahari. For someone (like Larsen) without prior knowledge of seasonality of the butterflies in southern Africa, it seemed we had a tryst with nothingness. Can there really be anything of note in such apparent desolation? We met on a cloudy, cool and blustery morning, with a cold front lying over the mountain, convinced that the first day's collecting was washed out. We took solace in sagely convincing each other that this was exactly what made the hills so interesting, since moisture levels are obviously better than than on the surrounding plains. -

The road is proposed to be constructed between Estate D’Afrique and the Meerhof estate. The proposed road route is approximately 282 m in length. A desktop study was conducted to establish whether any potentially sensitive fauna and flora species or species of conservation concern may possibly occur on site. The Virtual Museum and Animal Demography Unit (ADU) and SANBI POSA database was used to compile species lists based on the sightings and data gathering from the South African Biodiversity Institute for the 2527DD QDS. The avifaunal species list was obtained from SABAP2 for the 2555_2900 pentad.
