TOPIC Greek Language: The Oldest Spoken Language in Europe Highlights of this keynote speech: the historical development of the Greek language from its appearance to the present day the spread and dissemination during the long historical route the many interactions of her in contact with many other languages, and the communicative dimension from antiquity to the present day 11 FEATURED SPEAKER John Spiridakis, Ph.D. Professor and Coordinator TESOL and Bilingual Education School of Education St. John’s University, USA Dr. John Spiridakis serves as Professor and Coordinator of Graduate level education programs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Bilingual Education, in the School of Education at St. John’s University. He holds a MS, JD and PhD and is responsible for leading the several Graduate Education Programs he initiated, including Distance Learning and Global TESOL courses and field experiences in several countries. He also has directed several national, state and city research and development projects. He has numerous publications and presentations at international and national and conferences and co-authored “Greek in New York City” a chapter in the Multilingual Apple: Languages in a City. Dr. Spiridakis is Past- President of the Greek-American Behavioral Studies Institute and is a member of AERA, International TESOL, ASCD and the National Association for Bilingual Education. TOPIC STEM Education and Greek Language Immersion in the USA Greek language education has taken on new life in the long wake of the ravaging effects of assimilation that result in ethnic language rejection and loss for most ethnic and ethno-religious communities in the United States as well as in Europe. Language loss among language minorities is seemingly inevitable and is a well-documented global societal phenomenon. This paper surveys the current condition of Greek language based education in the private and public sectors, including heritage language schools in America. Prior research on the efficacy of Greek bilingual and heritage language education programs indicated a positive correlation between Greek language achievement and achievement in English and mathematics. Such research findings are discussed in light of and along with the promise and performance of Charter School programs focused on Greek. Results, actual and anticipated, of Greek language immersion and heritage language programs are illuminated in terms of design, approaches, and implementation that promise STEM learning, achievement and, for some programs, a richer soul. 12 FEATURED SPEAKER Jinyan Huang, Ph.D. Associate Professor and Ph.D. Faculty Member Ph.D. in Leadership and Policy Program Niagara University, USA President and Editor-in-Chief Untested Ideas Research Center, USA Jinyan Huang (Ph.D.) is an Associate Professor of quantitative research methods and measurement in the Leadership and Policy Ph.D. program at Niagara University. Dr. Huang earned his Ph.D. (2007) in cognitive studies (measurement and quantitative research methods) from Queen's University at Kingston in Canada. As part of his Ph.D. program, he studied at the Centre for Research in Applied Measurement and Evaluation (CRAME) (2004) at the University of Alberta in Canada. Dr. Huang's areas of research center on large- scale assessment, leadership, and policy issues. Specifically, he is interested in the following three issues: a) factors or level of factors that affect students' large-scale standardized test scores; b) assessment issues (reliability, validity, and fairness) in schools and universities; and c) the use of assessment data for supporting leadership and policies. Such a focus enables Dr. Huang to concentrate on the use of his research expertise in multivariate statistical methods, factor analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM), hierarchal linear modeling (HLM), generalizability (G-) theory, and item response theory (IRT). TOPIC Empirical Quantitative Research in Social Sciences Quantitative research is the realm of inquiry that relies on numerical data and statistical analysis with the intent of explaining, predicting, or controlling phenomena of interest. It is generally used to measure significant differences (comparing groups) and examine significant relationships between variables. This talk focuses on empirical studies in social sciences that used quantitative methodologies in their designs and analyses. The statistical analyses for measuring significant differences include analysis of variance (ANOVA) procedures, t-tests, or chi-square tests, to name a few procedures. The statistical analyses for examining significant relationships include correlations and regression. Several advanced quantitative procedures such as multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), structural equation modeling (SEM), hierarchal linear modeling (HLM), item response theory (IRT), and generalizability (G-) theory will be included in this talk as well. 13 UI BOOKS Title NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN ENGLAND AND JAPAN – Examining Advocacy, Accountability, and Ethical Climate Author Rosario Laratta ISBN 978-1-62520-000-6 Year 2012 Retail Price US$99.00 Title EMPIRICAL LEADERSHIP RESEARCH – Letting the Data Speak for Themselves Editors Scott Eacott & Richard Niesche ISBN 978-1-62520-003-7 Year 2013 Retail Price US$129.00 Title EMPIRICAL POLICY RESEARCH – Letting the Data Speak for Themselves Editor Rosario Laratta ISBN 978-1-62520-004-4 Year 2013 Retail Price US$99.00 Title LANGUAGE LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT – Challenges and Implications Editor Ling Zhang ISBN 978-1-62520-008-2 Year 2013 Retail Price US$119.00 Title ISSUES AND INNOVATIONS IN STEM EDUCATION RESEARCH – Theoretical and Empirical Studies by Early Career Researchers Editors Patrice Juliet Pinder & Edith L.
