1 How to Teach the Famous-Plagiarist Research Report Composition Project in 8 Classes Copyright 2011 by Bruce D. Bruce Cover Photograph © Kurhan | Dreamstime.com Introduction This document describes a composition project that I have successfully used during my years of teaching at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. The composition project is to write a research paper on a famous plagiarist of the student’s choice. The Famous-Plagiarist Research Report is useful because it teaches the students useful skills: • How to Recognize and Avoid Plagiarism • What Can Happen in the Real World When Someone is Caught Plagiarizing • How to Do Research • How to Use the MLA Format Teachers are welcome to evaluate this assignment to see if they want to use it in their own classes. Teachers are welcome to adapt this assignment as desired. Important Disclosure The students’ papers that appear in this document are copyrighted by the students who wrote them. Assign: Mandatory Famous-Plagiarist Research Paper. You will write a research paper using the MLA format about a famous plagiarist of your choice. • You will need five to fifteen reference sources; list them in a Works Cited List using the MLA format. • Two of your sources must come from a library online database such as Academic Search Complete. If you can’t find at least two sources using a library online database, choose another topic. • Use the MLA format. • Write 1,250 to 2,000 words (5-8 pages). • Use Times New Roman font and 1-inch margins. • Remember to double-space your papers. • Remember to hand in your early drafts. Use a 2-pocket folder to hand in your drafts. Put the early drafts in the left pocket and the final draft in the left pocket. Write “1st draft,” “2nd draft,” and “final draft” on the relevant drafts. Paper Requirements You may choose your topic for this Famous-Plagiarist Research Paper; however, your topic must meet my approval. We will be reading some interesting articles in the next few days that may give you a topic to write about and which may give you facts or ideas you can write about (while avoiding plagiarism, of course). Your Famous-Plagiarist Paper need not be huge. It will be between 1,250 and 2,000 words. Include a word count on the final draft of your paper. Use 12-point Times Roman font. You cannot plagiarize what someone else wrote. 7 You will use the MLA format. If you do, you will have a Works Cited list. You must have between five and fifteen items in the Works Cited list. Whenever a paper is written in the MLA format with in-text citations and a Works Cited list, the audience is almost always academic: either your teacher or the readers of a research journal. In this case, your reader is your teacher. You need to convince your teacher that you can write in an interesting way (writing about your personal experience helps you to do that), that you can do research, that you can use an academic format, that you can use in-text citations, and that you can write a paper using an academic format. (You may use the MLA format or the format that is used in your major.) Recommendations: • Visit <http://www.famousplagiarists.com/> online. This is an excellent site for finding out about plagiarism. • Visit <slate.com> online. Search for “Plagiarism.” Then search for “Plagiarism” together with one of the names that frequently pops up. • Google “Matthew Lesko Plagiarism” and see what pops up. • Begin doing research quickly. I recommend that you choose a topic and find a few sources and begin reading them quickly. • Part of the paper requires defining plagiarism and telling how to avoid it. You may begin writing that section as you research your famous plagiarist.

Edible Plagiarism: Reconsidering Recipe Copyright in the Digital Age ABSTRACT Sharing recipes through food blogs is an increasingly popular activity. Bloggers publish their own recipes, claiming copyright protection, but they also publish others' recipes. Food publishers who distribute recipes online may be harmed when bloggers include the entire text of the food publisher's recipe on a blog without the publisher's knowledge or permission. The blogger's inclusion of an entire recipe often reduces site traffic to the food publisher's website, thereby damaging advertising revenues. Copyright law, as courts interpret it today, does not provide these publishers with recourse against bloggers who publish their recipes without permission. This Note analyzes the various issues related to the copyrightability of recipes, beginning with the current rule on copyright protection for recipes.

    2018 Annual Report A Letter From Our Executive Director Dear Good+Foundation Supporters, In this 2018 Annual Report, we are proud to highlight the work that you helped make possible. In 2018, we expanded the organization’s focus to embrace fathers as essential players in lifting families out of poverty. Good+Foundation stepped onto the national stage by partnering with Ascend at the Aspen Institute to start this fatherhood dialogue with leaders across the country. We raised more money in 2018 than any previous year and met 93 percent of the critical gear needs – such as front carriers, car seats and strollers – of our partner programs. We could not do any of this without our generous and passionate supporters. Thank you. Our forward-thinking partners continued to show us the power of engaging and empowering dads and how our donations can be critical in that. For example, we came to know Kevin, whose 6-year-old daughter was left on his doorstep by the child’s mother before she disappeared. Making the move away from street life, Kevin enrolled in Good+ partner STRIVE’s “Strong Fathers, Stronger Families” program. While he worked through job trainings and parenting workshops, he received Good+ donations like books, a crib, clothing and toys as incentives for hitting milestones. These goods helped Kevin make a case for full custody of his child, which he was ultimately granted. INTRODUCTION Shocking as it always seems to non-lawyers, there is nothing inherently unlawful about deciding that someone else has a good idea and then ripping it off. The notion that ideas are “free as the air” has been an oft-quoted maxim since Justice Brandeis first coined the phrase in 1918. 1 But this general prin- ciple does have limits, and anyone that deals in the idea trade must understand those parameters. Although many theft of idea cases stem from the entertainment industry, it is a mistake to think businesses and individuals operating in other industries will not encounter these issues. Businesses must innovate or die. Good ideas will always be important and will always have commercial value.
