NATIONAL RAILROAD PASSENGER CORPORATION 60 Massachusetts Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20002

Joseph H. Boardman President and Executive Officer

Dear Traveler,

As Amtrak focuses on being a safer, greener and healthier railroad, we are experiencing a surge in ridership, posting a record 13.6 million passengers during the first six months of our fiscal year with the historically busy summer travel season still ahead. Americans are beginning to travel again and are choosing Amtrak as an affordable and efficient way to connect to their nation.

Amtrak also remains the unparalleled leader and only high-speed rail operator in America today, running the Express at 150 mph (241 kph) since 2000. To further maximize the available opportunities, we recently established a new department dedicated to developing and pursuing new intercity high-speed rail service in select corridors around the country and to plan for major improvements on the , including determining the feasibility of increasing top speeds up to 220 mph (354 kph).

In addition to our Northeast and Empire Corridors, several long-distance trains also travel through New York. One of the most beautiful routes continues to be the Adirondack from New York City through the to the and along Lake Champlain to Montreal. The Maple Leaf also originates in the city and makes its way to Canada traveling through Albany across the state to Buffalo and onto the majesty of Niagara Falls before arriving in Toronto. My personal favorite is the which follows much of the same picturesque path on its way to , the hub of the Amtrak system where you can make connections to everywhere we operate.

Riding on Amtrak is one of the most convenient ways to traverse the state and it is also energy efficient. Traveling by rail is approximately 20 percent more fuel efficient than airlines and 28 percent more than automobiles on a per-passenger-mile basis.* In addition, it has a smaller carbon footprint generating a lesser amount of carbon dioxide than both air and car travel. Even as Amtrak has increased train miles and frequencies across the country, we continue to reduce our consumption of fuel, thanks to improved practices and conservation measures.

New York by Rail® provides all you need to know to plan your New York rail adventure. I encourage you to take a copy to assist you in planning your journeys throughout this great region.

You can always count on us to do all we can to serve you each time your ride. Thanks for choosing Amtrak!

Sincerely,

Joseph H. Boardman President and Chief Executive Officer

4 | New York by Rail Amtrak.com • 1-800-USA-RAIL A letter from the Publisher of New York By Rail

t continues to amaze me how engaged New York By Rail readers Iare with this publication and rail travel in general. We field calls and receive letters and e-mails throughout the year on a variety of topics, including: your likes and dislikes about Amtrak® and New York By Rail; Amtrak train schedules; special fares (including the ILNY 20% Discount promoted in NYBR); publication date of the next issue of New York By Rail; and other Amtrak-related questions, such as the best way to get to your travel destination by riding Amtrak.

Some of you have even started to share your favorite Amtrak train photos, so in the last issue of New York By Rail we encouraged you to submit pictures of trains and stations or from trains and stations for a Photo Contest in which we promised to showcase the best photos. Since last year’s edition, we received some four dozen of your favorite pictures of scenes from throughout NYS and Canada. We’re pleased to present eight of the best ones, on pages 62 and 63 (and on our cover) and plan to make this an annual contest, so keep on sending us those photos.

This 7th Annual edition of New York By Rail also offers highlights of what’s happening in the regions surrounding the 35 Amtrak stops throughout New York State, Canada and Central Vermont; contains a NYS Calendar of Fairs, Festivals and Attractions; offers Green Travel ideas from Amtrak and I Love New York and provides an opportunity to test your wits with a Crossword Puzzle.

It’s gratifying to publish New York By Rail annually because so many of our readers tell us how much they enjoy the publication and look forward to reading next year’s edition. It’s also most gratifying when the judges of a prestigious communications industry awards competition think so highly of us. We are pleased to share with you the news that New York By Rail won a rare Grand APEX Award for Publication Excellence in 2009. New York By Rail was among 100 Grand Award winners selected from among 3,785 entries. The judges had the following comment about New York By Rail: “Beautiful spreads make the most of photos and typography. In-depth captions involve and interest the reader, and reinforce the inviting copy. A wonderfully appealing travelogue.”

Thanks for all your encouragement. Keep reading New York By Rail and continue riding Amtrak to the variety of fabulous New York State destinations, and sharing your journeys with us.

Sincerely

Dear Editor, Travel by rail far surpasses flying as you see the country instead of hours of clouds. I took the train to Albany in September for a wedding and loved it. My brother lives in Seattle, WA and turns 90 in June and I will be 86 in June also and would love to share birthdays with him. Can you send me any schedules and fares from Depew (Buffalo) NY to Seattle WA for June? Sincerely, Ruth Rathman / Hamburg, N.Y.

Ruth, you’re in luck. The Lake Shore Limited will take you from Buffalo to Chicago, where you transfer to the all the way to Seattle. We’re sending you the details, but you can always call 1-800-USA-RAIL for Amtrak Information.

Dear Editor, I really enjoyed reading your 2009 issue of New York By Rail. As of this writing, my wife and I are planning a trip to Disney World down in Florida. Our train journey will start from the beautiful Photo by Christine Yozzo Utica Station. I have ridden on quite a few Amtrak trains and thoroughly enjoyed it. I also like to ride excursion trains, such as the one Milford and Arkville, NY. Pictures of trains and stations, pictures from trains I caught the train “bug” when I was about twelve years old.
