    Sheffield award winners announced In the announcements of the winners of two pub competitions recently it has been reconfirmed that there are good things going on with pubs in Sheffield. The first was the National Pub Design awards, which is run in conjunction with English Heritage and the Victorian Society, with the Sheffield Tap being named the best conversion to pub use. Many years ago this Edwardian gem served as refreshment rooms and waiting facilities to train passengers, now restored to a high standard and operating as the Sheffield Tap pub, a specialist beer bar showcasing real ales and other craft beers from around the world both on tap and bottle. The judges comment on the Sheffield Tap: ‘Since 1976 this fine, listed interior had been left by successive railway companies to decay; as a result, the woodwork rotted away and the superb plaster ceiling finally succumbed to unchecked water leaks. In 2008, though, restoration of this fine interior finally began under the auspices of East Midlands Trains and with generous funding assistance from The Railway Heritage Trust. Craftsmen Jamie Hawksworth, Jon Holdsworth and their team worked hard to recapture the Edwardian feel of the room.

In 2006, this festival attracted over forty thousand participants to the Black Rock Desert in Northwestern Nevada to a flat dusty Playa surrounded by mountain ranges. While the natural environment there is hostile, the creative atmosphere is welcoming and invites a broad scope of performative behaviors and genres to be exhibited there, the entire week the festival takes place. Make-shift stages and theme camps, as well as large- scale interactive art pieces play host to participants who dress up in fanciful costumes to perform in all manner of imagining. This dissertation maps out the cultural terrain of Burning Man in order to explain how performing there is form of identity-making and cultural commodity. As one of a handful of North American festivals which expressly discourage commercialism and commodification, theatricality takes the place of significance for entertainment and communication. Performance forms of all kinds historically are represented at Burning Man and this dissertation will investigate and theorize how a new performance culture has emerged from the festival itself and by its presence as a theatrical event, has exposed and expanded performance and theatre forms. This dissertation offers a critical framework through which to consider performance and performers within the Burning Man community as applied to Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of Carnival and the Schema for Theatrical Eventness proposed by the International Federation for Theatre Research Theatrical Events Working Group.

Barnett SUPA, Department of Physics, University of Strathclyde 4 February 2008 The James Scott Prize Lectureship was established in 1918 in memory of James Scott, a farmer at East Pittendreich, near Brechin, by the Trustees of his Bequest. This prize is awarded quadrennially for a lecture on the fundamental concepts of Natural Philosophy. This year’s award goes to Professor Stephen Barnett FRS FRSE, who is based in the Department of Physics at the University of Strathclyde. Professor Barnett is one of the world’s most eminent scientists in the field of Quantum Optics. A previous winner of the Institute of Physics’ Maxwell Medal, he is perhaps best known for his co-discovery of the Barnett-Pegg phase operator. This established the first formally correct approach for handling both angles and phase as descriptions within quantum systems. Still within quantum physics, Professor Barnett holds a number of patents relating to techniques for writing unbreakable codes. For a subject that is potentially beyond most people’s understanding, Professor Barnett is well known for presenting the counter-commonsense implications of quantum mechanics in an accessible and entertaining way, stripping the subject of its supporting mathematics and leaving only the essence of pure ideas.
