F-34394 Montpellier Cedex5, France. Accepted 14 May, 2012 Sesamum radiatum (Schum. and Thonn) is a traditional leafy vegetable of national importance in Benin. Although, it is cultivated and consumed in many regions of the country, it is still unfortunately neglected by scientific research. In order to fill in the knowledge gaps necessary for its varietal improvement, 16 accessions collected from different agro-ecological zones were characterized using 16 quantitative morphological traits. A significant variability was found among the accessions. -
Effect of Plant Maturity on the Antinutritent of Sesamum Radiatum Leaves

Vol. 2(1), pp. 7-11, 31 January, 2014 E-ISSN: 2311-732X Effect of plant maturity on the antinutritent of Sesamum radiatum leaves Oduntan AO*, Olaleye O, Akinwande BA and Fasoyiro SB Corresponding Author: Oduntan AO Received: 25 December, 2013 Accepted: 10 January, 2014 Published: 31 January, 2014 A B S T R A C T This study investigated the effect of maturity on the some antinutritional factors of Sesamum radiatum leaves. Sesamum radiatum seeds were sown on an unfertilized land and the leaves were harvested on weekly basis from the fourth to the tenth week after planting (WAP) when s enenescence has started setting in. Phytate, tannin and oxalate of the plant were determined using A.O.A.C standard methods. The results obtained showed that the tannin ranges between 1.20 mg/100g – 5.60mg/100g, phytate ranges between 1.65 mg/100g – 3.82 mg/100g and oxalate increase from 4WAP (2.84 mg/100g) to 10WAP (4.64 mg/100g). The antinutritional factors were significantly (p< 0.05) affected by the maturity of the leaves. Furthermore, oxalate increase with increase in mat urity of the leaves. The study indicated that as the leaf matures the antinutrient increases. The optimum value for tannin, oxalate and phytate for human use was observed at 9 WAP. O., Usman, S.S and Ayodele, S.M *Biology Department Federal College of Education Okene, Kogi State ** Department of Biological Sciences, Kogi State University Anyiagba, Nigeria ----------------------------------------------------------ABSTRACT----------------------------------------------------------- This work is the documentation of ethno – medicinal and cultural utilization of some plants by the inhabitants of Dekina local government area of Kogi State. The data were collected by the researcher using the prepared check – list. Field trips were made to villages within the study area. A total of 200 willing respondents were interviewed. Information regarding the common uses of some plant species for various ethno – medicinal and cultural purposes were investigated. Vernacular names of the described species were also of interest. The respondents assisted in the collection and identification of plant samples. Standard literatures and floras were consulted for their proper identification. The data obtained were collated and tabulated showing botanical names, common names, vernacular or tribal names, families, uses and parts used. It was discovered that to protect our future planet and generation there is need to document this vital information and also create awareness or enlightenment -

Koeduka) Abstract (+)-Sesamin is a major furofran-class lignan in sesame seeds and harbors characteristic two methylenedioxy bridges (MDB) that are sequentially formed from (+)-pinoresinol via (+)-piperitol by a Sesamum indicum P450, CYP81Q1. However, the molecular basis for this unique catalytic activity of CYP81Q1 has been poorly understood. To elucidate MDB formation, we tested various natural and non-natural metabolites as substrates for CYP81Q1. A synthetic (+)-SC1mr and a naturally occurring (+)-kobusin showed inhibitory effect on the production of (+)-sesamin by CYP81Q1 unlike (+)-epipinoresinol and (−)-pinoresinol, indicating the strict diastereomer and enantiomer selectivity. Homology modeling followed by site-directed mutagenesis of CYP81Q1 showed that an amino acid residue crucial for MDB formation is a unique Ala residue (A308), located in I-helix proximal to the substrate pocket, responsible to the conserved distal-Thr residue. -

Strips of Taenia caeci were rapidly removed from guinea-pig and were suspended between two L-shaped stainless steel hooks in a 10 ml organ bath with Mac Ewen solution. The isometric contractile force of the Taenia caeci strips were recorded by using a strain gauge. S. radiatum aqueous leaf extract (ESera) is a spasmogenic substance. This myostimulant effect is characterized by the increase of the rhythm and the amplitude of isolated guinea-pig Taenia caeci smooth muscle in normal solution and by the development of contracture in modified solution and in solution without calcium. A similar effect was observed with ACh which caused a graded increase of the contractile activity of Taenia caeci. -

Accepted 14 January, 2010 Essential oil was extracted from the dried leaves of Sesamum radiatum by hydro-distillation and analyzed by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. n-Hexadecanoic acid was found to be the major constituent and with three other fatty acids namely, 9,12,15-octadecanoic acid-(Z,Z,Z), dodecanoic acid and tetradecanoic acid constitute 40.64% of the oil. Other constituents include heptatriacontanol, estra–1,3,5(10)–trien-17á-ol, 1-(+)–ascorbic acid, 2,6-dihexadecanoate, ethyl iso- allocholate, 18,19–secoyohimban–19-oic acid, 16,17,20,21-tetrahydro-16-(hydroxymethyl)-methyl ester, (15á, 16E)-trans-(2,3-diphenylcyclopropyl) methylphenyl sulfoxide, 1,1-[2-methyl-2-(phenylthio) cyclopropylidene]bis-benzene and phenolics. The presence of some of these constituents in the essential oil provides the scientific evidences for the observed cardiovascular and estrogenic activity as well as curative properties of the plant for male infertility factor, constipation, fungal and bacterial infections and bruises. ABSTRACT This study is to investigate the degree of river naturality according to the river morphology and the flora on the Sosa River at three regions during four seasons. Number of flexion was three at upper region and those of middle and low regions were one. Transversal and longitudinal sandbars were absent. Materials of river shore and river levee at low channel width were state of nature without protecting materials at upper region and those of middle and low regions were many artificial levee. The flora on the Sosa River was a total of 65 taxa, including 25 families, 58 species, and 7 varieties. Naturalized species were 8 families and 22 species. The construction of the reservoir has caused the quantitative collapse of the river area and cause the qualitative reduction of the riparian. Stereo-selective, DP-guided, monolignol-derived radical coupling in vitro was then reported to afford the optically active lignan, (+)-pinoresinol from coniferyl alcohol, provided one-electron oxidase/oxidant capacity was present. It later became evident that DPs have several distinct sub-families. In vascular plants, DPs hypothetically function, along with other essential enzymes/proteins (e.g. oxidases), as part of lignin/lignan forming complexes (LFCs). Herein, we used an integrated bottom-up, top-down, and native mass spectrometry approach to detect potential interacting proteins in a DP-enriched solubilized protein fraction from Forsythia × intermedia, via adaptation of our initial report of DP solubilization and purification. -

Accepted 19 February, 2007 Concern about the rising prevalence of antibiotics resistant strains pathogenic microorganisms has been expressed in the last three decades. However, intensive studies on extracts and biologically active compounds isolated from medicinal plants have equally doubled in the last decade. The ethanolic, methanolic and aqueous extracts of Sesame radiatum and its combination with Sesame indicum leaves were studied for their in-vitro antimicrobial activity against tested pathogenic micro-organisms. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry phytochemical screening showed the presence of essential oils mainly the phenolic and carboxylic acids groups. Ethanolic extracts of Sesame leaves have no inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus but strongly effective against Streptococcus pneumoniae and mildly effective against Candida albicans. However, the methanolic extract exhibited a mild antimicrobial activity against Staph.
