The 2013 film Philomena is based on what happened five decades later, when Lee went looking for her son with the help of a journalist. Directed by Stephen Frears and starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, Philomena is up for several Academy Awards, including one in an unlikely category. French composer Alexandre Desplat has scored dozens of films, across an astonishing range of styles and genres: Zero Dark Thirty, The King's Speech, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, two Harry Potter films. Compared to those efforts, his Oscar- nominated score for Philomena is strikingly spare, often falling silent in the moments where the drama is most potent. Desplat says the gravitas of the true story, contrasted with the lightness and humor that Dench brought to her role, made the score one of the hardest he's ever had to write. "When I saw the film for the first time, it got me so emotional that I when I went back to my studio, I started trying to find what could reflect Judi Dench's character: This fragile, over-70-years-old lady who shows much more strength than she seems to have, who has had a hidden secret for 50 years, and who is capable of forgiveness," Desplat says.

    Book Club Discussion Guide The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by George Sixsmith ____________________________________________________ About the Author George Martin Sixsmith, British author and journalist. Sixsmith joined the BBC in 1980 where he worked as a foreign correspondent, most notably reporting from Moscow during the end of the Cold War. He also reported from Poland during the Solidarity uprising and was the BBC's Washington correspondent during the election and first presidency of Bill Clinton. He was based in Russia for five years, the US for four, Brussels for four and Poland for three. Sixsmith left the BBC in 1997 to work for the newly elected government of Tony Blair. He became Director of Communications (a civil service post), working first with Harriet Harman and Frank Field, then with Alistair Darling. His next position was as a Director of GEC plc, where he oversaw the rebranding of the company as Marconi plc. In December 2001, he returned to the Civil Service to join the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions as Director of Communications in time to become embroiled in the second act of the scandal over Jo Moore. Moore was special adviser to the transport secretary Stephen Byers and had been the subject of much public condemnation for suggesting that a controversial announcement should be "buried" during the media coverage of the September 11, 2001 attacks.[1] Sixsmith incurred the displeasure of Downing Street when his email advising Byers and Moore not to bury more bad news was leaked to the press.     Dear Members of PA NOW, In 1952, Irish-born Philomena Lee gave birth to her son Anthony at the State-funded Sean Ross Abbey mother-baby home in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary. Sean Ross was one of three mother-baby homes run by the Sacred Heart Sisters in Ireland, responsible for more than 25,000 adoptions in and from Ireland. Despite the state's funding of the home, for three years, Philomena nurtured and loved her son while working off ‘her keep’ in the home’s laundry, until her son was cruelly taken from her and trafficked for adoption to the US. Anthony was one of more than 2,000 such ‘Banished Babies’ sent to the US, including nearly 100 Pennsylvania citizens (c.f. Banished Babies, Mike Milotte, 1997). I am one of those as well, adopted from Ireland to Philadelphia in 1961. My loving adoptive parents were always truthful with my younger adoptive brother and me about our circumstances, and always respected our right to know who we are. I am also the mother of a daughter born in Philadelphia in 1978 who I was forced to relinquish in a closed, coercive adoption orchestrated by Philadelphia Catholic Charities. I was not asked to sign a confidentiality agreement at the time, nor did I seek such confidentiality. I've always believed, as does Philomena, that we are accountable to our children. For many years, Philomena tried in vain to contact her son, or at least determine if he was happy and well and gave the Sisters her contact information. Each time, she was rebuffed by them.

    The Coonans of Roscrea By Michael F. McGraw, Ph.D. [email protected] October 26, 2018 Introduction This continues the effort to organize, consolidate and extend the research of Robert Conan. The following paper concerns the Coonan families found in the area of Ireland around Roscrea, Co. Tipperary. The material found in Conan’s notes pertaining to this subject consists of two parts: (1) a structured family report covering five generations and (2) a set of interviews conducted by Robert Conan in Ireland in 1970 and 1972. The data in the structured family report covers the period from the mid-1700s to the early 1800s and is discussed in Part I of this paper. Information was also found on a Roscrea family which had immigrated to Australia in 1865; they are also included in this part of the paper. The Robert Conan interviews covered the then current generation of Coonan descendants and went back one or two generations and which forms Part II of the paper. The overall goal is to connect the earlier Coonan generations with the more recent descendants, where possible. As many church and civil records as possible were collected to complement those collected by Robert Conan during his visits to Ireland. The information has been structured as family trees to achieve a concentration of the information and to increase the probability of discovering other family connections. The geographic proximity of the families described in this paper holds the promise of finding connections among them. A more long range goal is to find connections with the Upperchurch Coonan families, which were described in an earlier paper.
