Religious Ideology and Discourse: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Marsiya-e-Hussain Snobra Rizwan Lecturer, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan Tariq Saeed Assisstant Professor, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan Ramna Fayyaz Lecturer, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan ABSTRACT This paper employs Fairclough’s framework of critical discourse analysis (Fairclough, 2001; 2003) as a research tool to demonstrate how mourning discourse of marsiya manages to win favourite responses from Pakistani audiences by foregrounding certain linguistic conventions. The data comprising popular marsiyas are based on responses obtained through a small-scale survey and are analyzed from the perspective of ideology and emotive appeal embedded in discourse. The analysis illustrates that discourse conventions of marsiya—in addition to traditional commemoration of martyrdom of Imam Hussian—serve to elaborate, explain and disseminate religious doctrines in Pakistani Shi‘ah masses. Keywords: Marsiya, Critical Discourse Analysis, Ideology, Shiism 1. Introduction This paper provides a close study to examine the distinguishing features of marsiya-e-Hussain and the way discursive choices of certain transitivity features, figurative language and lyrical conventions serve to make it a distinct poetic genre of its own. Though marsiya recitation is taken to be a means of commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain; nevertheless, it means much more to Shi’ia community. Along with other mourning rituals, marsiya is considered to be a means of seeking waseela (mediation) from the saints, teaching and learning religious ideologies, seeking God’s pleasure and so on (‘Azadari; mourning for Imam Hussain’, 2009). All these objectives are achieved by following certain discourse conventions which in turn construct certain discursive reality and weigh heavily on the formation of distinctive opinion and religious ideology in Shi‘ah masses. -

Langue, religion et politique : l’ourdou au Pakistan et dans le nord de l’Inde. L’ourdou, langue nationale du Pakistan et symbole identitaire des Indiens musulmans est associée à l’islam en Asie du sud. Cette association a été forgée pendant la période coloniale britannique. Les Britanniques ont remplacé le persan - langue du pouvoir moghol - par l’our- dou (aux échelons inférieurs) et l’anglais (aux échelons supérieurs) dans plusieurs régions du nord de l’Inde et de l’actuel Pakistan. L’ourdou s’est diffusé par le biais des réseaux scolaires et de communication dans l’Inde coloniale. Il devint le principal médium d’instruction dans les séminaires musulmans (madrasa-s) et la principale langue des écrits religieux. L’ourdou est également devenu un symbole important de l’identité musulmane et a contribué, juste après l’islam, à mobiliser la communauté musulmane pour demander la création du Pakistan en 1947. Au Pakistan, l’ourdou et l’islam sont des composantes symboliques importantes de l’identité nationale et s’opposent à l’expression des langues autochtones. Cette identité est principalement défendue par les partis politiques de droite et se positionne comme opposée non seulement aux identifications ethniques mais également à une identité occidentale plus globalisée et libérale qui serait symbolisée par l’anglais. En Inde cependant, l’ourdou soutient la minorité musulmane contre la domination hindoue nationaliste. De fait, l’ourdou, dans sa relation avec l’islam, joue un rôle complexe et parfois contradictoire au Pakistan et au nord de l’Inde. -

This approach is narrow and restricts the poem’s great revolutionary character. In this essay, the Musaddas is seen as a poetic charter for the liberation of Muslims from foreign yoke and their assertion as a separate religious entity. The Musaddas has to be seen as the herald of national movement to assert Muslim identity thereby leading logically to the demand for a separate Muslim state. While Timurid fine art such as miniature painting has been extensively studied, the literary production of the era has not been fully explored. Abd al-Rahman Jami (817/1414- 898/1492), the most renowned poet of the Timurids, is among those Timurid poets who have not been methodically studied in Iran and the West. Although, Jami was recognized by his contemporaries as a major authority in several disciplines, such as science, philosophy, astronomy, music, art, and most important of all poetry, he has yet not been entirely acknowledged in the post Timurid era. This dissertation highlights the significant contribution of Jami, the great poet and Sufi thinker of the fifteenth century, who is regarded as the last great classical poet of Persian literature. It discusses his influence on Persian literature, his central role in the Naqshbandi Order, and his input in clarifying Ibn Arabi's thought. Jami spent most of his life in Herat, the main center for artistic ability and aptitude in the fifteenth century; the city where Jami grew up, studied, flourished and produced a variety of prose and poetry.
