Memory in Action: Mediatised Public Memory and the Symbolic Construction of Conflict in Student Movements
Memory in Action: Mediatised Public Memory and the Symbolic Construction of Conflict in Student Movements Lorenzo Zamponi Thesis submitted for assessment with a view to obtaining the degree of Doctor of Political and Social Sciences of the European University Institute Florence, April, 2015 (submission) European University Institute Department of Political and Social Sciences Memory in Action: Mediatised Public Memory and the Symbolic Construction of Conflict in Student Movements Lorenzo Zamponi Thesis submitted for assessment with a view to obtaining the degree of Doctor of Political and Social Sciences of the European University Institute Examining Board Professor Donatella Della Porta, EUI and Scuola Normale Superiore (Supervisor) Professor William A. Gamson, Boston College Professor Ron Eyerman, Yale University Professor Hanspeter Kriesi, EUI © Lorenzo Zamponi, 2015 No part of this thesis may be copied, reproduced or transmitted without prior permission of the author Abstract Cultural factors shape the symbolic environment in which contentious politics take place. Among these factors, collective memories are particularly relevant: they can help collective action by providing symbolic material from the past, but at the same time they can constrain people's ability to mobilise by imposing proscriptions and prescriptions. In my research I analyse the relationship between social movements and collective memories: how do social movement participate in the building of public memory? And how does public memory, and in particular the media representation of a contentious past, influence the social construction of identity in the contemporary movements? To answer these questions I focus on the student movements in Italy and Spain, analysing the content and format of media sources in order to draw a map of the different narrative representations of a contentious past, while I use qualitative interviews to investigate their influence on contemporary mobilisations. -

Comunicato Ijf12
Confermati i grandi sponsor privati e istituzionali. -

Its theoretical framework lies between the studies around Italian youth culture and those around the Italian Communist Party (PCI), investigating the relationship between young people and contemporary society and examining, for the first time, the relationship of the former with the PCI, its institutions and media organs.1 The arrival of an Anglo-American influenced pop culture (culture transmitted by the media and targeted at young people) and of its market, shaped the individualities of part of the pre-baby boomers that, finally, were able to create bespoke identities somewhat disconnected from the traditional party-related narrative while remaining on the left of the political spectrum. -

Enrico Berlinguer in Post-Berlin Wall Italy.* at the Time of His Death, In
‘We all miss you’: Enrico Berlinguer in post-Berlin Wall Italy.* At the time of his death, in 1984, communist leader Enrico Berlinguer’s political appeal and popularity was at its apogee in Italy. Deputy leader of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) from 1969, and then leader from 1972 until his death, Berlinguer had been one of the most loved politicians of the history of the Italian Republic, a man of recognized unselfishness whose integrity, as Donald Sassoon memorably put it ‘was doubted only by those who had none’. 1 Under his leadership, the party had reached the peak of its electoral popularity, winning 34.4% of the votes at the national elections of 1976. Arguably, because of the emotion produced in the country by his dramatic death – he suffered a massive stroke while delivering a speech at an electoral meeting – the PCI gained the only victory over Democrazia Cristiana (DC) in its history, at the European elections of June 1984. More than one million people attended Berlinguer’s funeral in Rome2. That event, broadcast live by the Italian public television network, appears nowadays like the swan song of Italian communist pride, before the PCI’s electoral and political decline of the second half of the 1980s. A few years later the Italian Communist Party ceased to exist, following the decision to change the name of the party taken at the XXth and last congress of the PCI, in 1991. The PCI was no more, but Enrico Berlinguer’s reputation had just begun to soar and it would increasingly flourish, in a range of political and cultural spaces, in the years to come.
