Java applet guide

This page will provide you with information on how to upload and download your research data to and from the UNSW Data Archive using the applet web-based user interface. Researchers who are already familiar with the web-based user interface, who upload or download more than 50 GB of data and/or more than 1000 files, at a time, and, who download large datasets based on advanced searches should use the Java applet web- based user interface. This page contains the following elements:

Preparing to use the Data Archive

Before you start uploading your research data to the Data Archive, make sure it is organised and in alignment with UNSW recommendations and, that you know the level of access you have to the Collections inside the Data Archive. Read the Preparing data for upload and the RDMP and the Data Archive pages for more information.

Note: a word of caution; it is recommended that you retain a local copy of the research data you have uploaded to the Data Archive for two weeks, before local deletion, to ensure that all three copies of your data have been created and one copy has been taken off-site. See the When should I delete / remove the local copy of my data? FAQ for more information.

Should I use the Java applet web-based user interface?

Use of the Java applet web-based user interface is only suggested for researchers who have successfully used the Data Archive with the Java applet web-based user interface in the past. The Java applet web-based user interface can be used by researchers; who upload or download more than 50 GB of data and/or more than 1000 files, at a time, and, researchers who download large data sets based on advanced searches. The Java applet web-based user interface is difficult to setup on your computer and is known to cause difficulties each time you access the Data Archive.

The UNSW Data Archive Web application provides access to an interface enabling you to upload , download, locate, and review your research data. The Data Archive Web application is suitable for researchers who wish to search the Data Archive and to either upload or download less than 50 gigabytes (GB) of data and/or less then 1000 files (during a single session).

Researchers who frequently upload or download data, and/or generate datasets, may wish to schedule a regular upload or download of data using the Script or use SFTP rather than manually uploading and downloading data via the Web application.

Researchers who upload or download more than 50 GB of data and/or more than 1000 files, at a time, please see the SFTP client guide. Researchers who wish to schedule a regular upload or download of data, please see the Command line Script guide.

System/setup requirements

To access the UNSW Data Archive using the Java applet web-based user interface you will need:

The latest version of the Java applet. The latest version of the Firefox or Safari browsers. The link to the Data Archive Java applet web-based user interface: https://rds.unsw.edu.au/java. An active UNSW zID and zPass. To verify your zID/zPass visit the UNSW Identity management page.

Please note: you can view and search for your data in the Data Archive without the Java applet, when not using a Firefox or Safari browser, and using the Java applet web-based user interface but you will not be able to upload to, or download from, the Data Archive.

Please note that or Chrome browsers cannot be used in conjunction with the Data Archive when using the Java applet web-based user interface as they no longer support Java. If you currently use Internet Explorer or Chrome, please download and install either Firefox or Safari before you begin your Java installation or upgrade.

Java setup and other issues:

To check that you have the latest version of Java installed go to the Java . Contact your local IT Support or the UNSW IT Service Centre (9385 1333) to install the Java application and/or either the Firefox or Safari browsers when using a SOE (Standard Operating Environment) workstation. If you have administrator rights on your PC, you can download and install the Java application and/or the Firefox or Safari browser yourself. For information on how to set up Java, see the How do I configure my browser for Java? FAQ To troubleshoot Java applet issues see these FAQ pages: What do I do with the popups and error messages? 'Security Redirect' message has appeared - what do I do? Do you want to run this application? dti: shows 'no java' or 'inactive' - what do I do? What do I do with the 'Application Blocked' message?

Uploading data to the Data Archive

Note: do not use the browser navigation buttons when inside the Java applet web-based user interface.

Note: you will need Lead Chief Investigator (LCI), Research Project Manager, or Contributor access rights to upload data to the Data Archive. See the How do I know what access level I have in the Data Archive? FAQ to find out your access rights for a project.

Access the Data Archive by opening a Firefox or Safari browser and entering the following URL: https://rds.unsw.edu.au/java. You’re now on the Data Archive login page.

At the login page, enter your UNSW zID (for User:) and zPass (for Password:) and click ‘Login'.

There are two ways to upload content into the Data Archive.

Method 1:

1. On the upper left of the screen, you’ll see the Asset Finder icon. To upload your data, you’ll need to open two Asset Finder windows. Double click the Asset Finder icon twice .

2. If you can’t see two Asset Finder windows, one may have opened directly on top of the other. Use your mouse to drag the two windows into position.

3. You'll see the following menu items in the first pane of the Asset Finder:

Home Collections Files Metadata In the first open Asset Finder, select the ‘Files’ option. This will open up a list of folders and files (folders in the second pane and files in the third pane) present on your local computer.

4. In the second pane of the Asset Finder, search through the folders stored on your computer until you find the data you wish to upload. You can upload individual files, multiple files, or whole folders of content. The fastest way to manage this process is to move all your data into a single folder before you start uploading.

Note: to select multiple files, use the Shift key (rather than the Ctrl key) on your keyboard and click on each of the files you wish to include in the group.

5. In the second open Asset Finder, select ‘Collections’. This will open up the folder structure that has been set up to store your research data in the Data Archive (folders in the second pane and files in the third pane).

6. In the second pane, browse through the 'Collections' folder structure until you find the folder or sub-folder you want to upload your data to. Click on it to open it – this process can take a few minutes, so be patient!

7. Select the folder or file(s) you want to upload from the first open Asset Finder ‘Files’ location (from the second pane for folders or the third pane for a file(s)) and drag and drop the selected item to the second pane of the second open Asset Finder ‘Collections’ location .

8. Next, a notification box will pop up on your screen. Click the ‘Import Files’ on the bottom right hand side.

Note: if you wish to upload empty folders you will need to check the 'Import Empty Folders' check box. Your files are now being imported. You should see a progress bar on the screen in front of you that shows you how the import is progressing

9. Once all the files have been uploaded successfully, a ‘Dismiss’ button will appear on the notification box. Click the 'Dismiss' button to complete the upload process.

10. Finished using the Data Archive? Click ‘Desktop’ on the top left hand corner of the dashboard screen, and then click ‘Logout’.

Method 2:

1. Access the Data Archive by opening a Firefox or Safari browser and entering the following URL: https://rds.unsw.edu.au/java. You’re now on the Data Archive login page.

Drag the source folder (in the second pane) or files (in the third pane) up to ‘Collections’ in the first pane of the same Asset Finder (above the ‘Files’ you clicked on in the previous step) and hold it without releasing your mouse button. This will open up a list of folders and files in the second pane and third panes that are stored in the Data Archive. Note: to select multiple files, use the Shift key (rather than the Ctrl key) on your keyboard and click on each of the files you wish to include in the group.
