Safe Streets and Community

By Shawn Nason, City Councillor – Transcona Ward

As summer has kicked into full swing, people continue to move about our community enjoying the many parks, restaurants, and local attractions that Transcona has to offer. It is time for a reminder to look out for our neighbours and ensure our communities remain a safe place for everyone. th On July 8 a Community town hall took place at Park City West Community Club which was attended by many of our neigh- bours. Councillor Kevin Klein (Chair of the Police Board), Members of the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) and Repre- sentatives from the Citizens On Patrol Program (COPP) were in attendance to answer questions from our community. Transcona has fared much better than many of the other wards within the City in crime and violence-BUT- we are not immune. We need to be diligent in our community, keeping an eye out for what belongs and doesn’t belong in our neighbourhoods is critical. Having well-lit proper- ties with motion lights; securing your doors, gates and sheds; and lock- ing your vehicle (free of any valuable contents) are a couple quick ideas. It is critical if you observe behavior that seems out of place, or have been a victim of petty crime even if as simple as only your Tim Hortons money being taken from your vehicle—-Please report it to the WPS via either the non-emergency line 204.986.6222 or via online at https://www.winnipeg.ca/police/report/. If you are interested in beginning a Citizens On Patrol team in your neighbourhood please call Julie-Ann Continued on page 22

Well, if they had really listened to their constituents’ concerns, they would understand that what we really need is emergency health serv- ices to continue to be provided at our com- munity’s hospital and accessible to the citizens of northeast Winnipeg and sur- rounding communities. What we don’t need is the extra travel time to access emergency serv- ices at other hospitals – extra travel time that could mean the difference between life or death. What we don’t need is to be required to self-diagnose to determine which hospital to go to, find out we got it wrong and then have to get ourselves to another hospital at our own expense. Each year, nearly 30,000 people re- ceived care at the Concordia ER. If the government is correct in saying that two thirds of those people can be looked after at an Urgent Care, that still means 10,000 people each year that will not have access to the emergency medical care they need within our community. Closing the Concordia ER also re- duces the number of resuscitation beds, Intensive Care (ICU) beds and inpatient acute care beds available within the health care system, and decreases the number of operating rooms available for emergency surgery. This affects every- one as evidenced by increased wait times and cancelled cardiac surgeries that have been reported in the past month.
