Cetacean bycatch has been documented in the pole-and-line tuna fishery in the Azores with common dolphins being the species more frequently taken. Based on data collected by observers on ∼50% of vessels operating from 1998 to 2012, we investigate the influence of various environmental and fisheries-related factors in common dolphin bycatch and calculate fleet-wide estimates of total bycatch using design-based and model-based methods. Over the 15-year study dolphin bycatch occurred in less than 0.4% of the observed fishing events. Generalized additive modelling results suggest a significant relationship between common dolphin bycatch and duration of fishing events, sea surface temperature and location. Total bycatch calculated from the traditional stratified ratio estimation approach was 196 (95% CI: 186–205), while the negative binomial GAM estimated 262 (95% CI: 249–274) dolphins. Bycatch estimates of common dolphin were similar using statistical approaches suggesting that either of these methods may be Submitted 21 August 2017 used in future bycatch assessments for this fishery. -

A list of the marine fishes of the Azores is presented. The list is based on a review of the literature combined with an examination of selected specimens available from collections of Azorean fishes deposited in museums, including the collection of fish at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores (Horta). Personal information collected over several years is also incorporated. The geographic area considered is the Economic Exclusive Zone of the Azores. The list is organised in Classes, Orders and Families according to Nelson (1994). The scientific names are, for the most part, those used in Fishes of the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (FNAM) (Whitehead et al. 1989), and they are organised in alphabetical order within the families. Clofnam numbers (see Hureau & Monod 1979) are included for reference. Information is given if the species is not cited for the Azores in FNAM. Whenever available, vernacular names are presented, both in Portuguese (Azorean names) and in English. Synonyms, misspellings and misidentifications found in the literature in reference to the occurrence of species in the Azores are also quoted. The 460 species listed, belong to 142 families; 12 species are cited for the first time for the Azores. -

Analysis of retained and bycatch fish in New Zealand orange roughy fisheries Ministry for Primary Industries, 2015 Fish bycatch in each of the three fisheries under assessment for MSC certification was analysed to determine catch volume and identify any species that met the MSC criteria as ‘main species’ for the purposes of this assessment. The fisheries used to define catches match the agreed Unit of Certification - all fishing effort reported as targeting orange roughy (ORH), oreo (OEO), black oreo (BOE), and smooth oreo (SSO) within the designated area (See Figure 1 for fishery area). Figure 1: Orange roughy fishery areas for MSC Certification Catch levels were considered in light of the MSC criteria for ‘main’ retained and bycatch species of: Any species which makes up more than 5% of the total catch Any ‘vulnerable’ species (defined as any elasmobranch) that makes up more than 1% of the total catch Method These analyses used the observed catch in each fishery over the most recent four or five years, depending on the data available. Once the observed catch of each species was quantified it was then scaled up based on the proportion of total effort observed in each year. Total effort (observed and unobserved) was determined from reported target tows in the relevant areas from commercially reported data on statutory reporting forms (Trawl catch effort processing returns (TCEPR) and trawl catch effort returns (TCER). The scaled up total annual catch was used to calculate the proportion of the total catch made up by each species, and an average annual catch was calculated. -
