The University of Chicago Freak Out the Squares: The Semiotic Production of American Biker Identities and the Preservation of an Abject Sign By Cody James Boukather August 2021 A paper submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts degree in the Master of Arts Program in the Social Sciences Faculty Advisor: Constantine Nakassis Preceptor: Victoria Gross 1 Abstract This thesis examines the political dimensions of linguistic and semiotic preservation of biker subculture as it relates to race, gender, and class among contemporary bikers in the United States. Propelled by the biker colloquialism “freak out the squares” – which is used to draw boundaries of ideological and behavioral difference between bikers and the non-biker mainstream – I investigate the embodiment of this prominent attitude within the aesthetic, material, and language practices of a subcultural group of bikers who preserve a style of choppers (custom motorcycles) that originated in the post-WW2 and countercultural eras. This style historically has influenced mainstay American biker ideologies and its authentication has become evident through the working-class cultural production of motorcycles, magazines, dress, and language that reproduce sexist, racist, and xenophobic fields of signification. While this style paints bikers as stereotypically White, male, libertarian, and violent, the current communities who preserve these cultural forms aren’t always necessarily so. Faced with this tension, I investigate the biker drive to shock and scare within the terms of what Julia Kristeva calls abjection. I use ethnographic material to discuss what role abjection holds within the sexist, racist, and xenophobic linguistic and semiotic practices of this cultural style.

  • Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs and Organized Crime
Klaus von Lampe and Arjan Blokland Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs and Organized Crime ABSTRACT Outlaw motorcycle clubs have spread across the globe. Their members have been associated with serious crime, and law enforcement often perceives them to be a form of organized crime. Outlaw bikers are disproportionately engaged in crime, but the role of the club itself in these crimes remains unclear. Three scenarios describe possible relations between clubs and the crimes of their members. In the “bad apple” scenario, members individually engage in crime; club membership may offer advantages in enabling and facilitating offending. In the “club within a club” scenario, members engage in crimes separate from the club, but because of the number of members involved, including high-ranking members, the club itself appears to be taking part. The club can be said to function as a criminal organization only when the formal organizational chain of command takes part in organization of the crime, lower level members regard senior members’ leadership in the crime as legitimate, and the crime is generally understood as “club business.” All three scenarios may play out simultaneously within one club with regard to different crimes. Fact and fiction interweave concerning the origins, evolution, and prac- tices of outlaw motorcycle clubs. The Evolution and Influence of Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs in the American West A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts with a Major in History in the College of Graduate Studies University of Idaho by Anthony M. Saia Major Professor: Ian Chambers, Ph.D. Committee Members: Rebecca Jager, Ph.D.; Joseph DeAngelis, Ph.D. Department Administrator: Sean Quinlan, Ph.D. May 2015 ii Authorization to Submit Thesis This thesis of Anthony M. Saia, submitted for the degree of Master of Arts with a Major in History and titled “The Evolution and Influence of Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs in the American West,” has been reviewed in final form. Permission, as indicated by the signatures and dates below, is now granted to submit final copies to the College of Graduate Studies for approval. The aim of this research is to confirm or refute some myths that surround outlaw motorcycle groups. In addition, this research is an attempt to explore how outlaw motorcycle clubs have been influenced and have influenced by the American West. I will explore these ideas by examining outlaw clubs and their creation, their exclusionary principles (through race and ethnicity, and sex), as well as explore the outlaw motorcycle clubs’ current image in today’s media.

  • Women's Participation in Endurance Motorcycle Challenges
WOMEN’S PARTICIPATION IN ENDURANCE MOTORCYCLE CHALLENGES Abagail L. Van Vlerah A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2013 Committee: Vikki Krane, Committee Chair Rebecca J. Mancuso, Graduate Faculty Representative Ellen Berry Sarah Rainey © 2013 Abagail L. Van Vlerah All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Vikki Krane, Committee Chair This work examines women’s participation in endurance motorcycle challenges, specifically the Hoka Hey motorcycle challenge, a multi-thousand mile turn-by-turn endurance event and lifestyle sport to raise awareness for the Lakota Sioux of Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Using ethnographic methods and creative non-fiction, the experiences of women challengers are folded between postmodern theoretical concepts. Building on work of sport, motorcycle, and feminist scholars, this work takes an interdisciplinary approach to viewing lifestyle sport. Using a feminist cultural studies lens the Hoka Hey emerges as a meaningful event, which not only empowers women but also supports gender non-conformity, builds community, creates instances of transgression, and breaks down binaries. By living a feminist ethic of care and participating in a heavily masculinized environment, women riders of the Hoka Hey challenge gender norms and stereotypes of motorcyclists. Using the Hoka Hey as a basis for understanding both motorcycling and sporting cultures, there is potential for reimagining sport in a rhizomatic model to effectively break down the hegemonic center of the sporting world. iv Mitakuye Oyasin v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This work was not done in isolation; it came to fruition for and because of so many people.
