Fourty-four species and one variety of hydroids were identified in the John Murray hydroid collection, obtained from the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the northern part of the Indian Ocean, largely from deep water localities. Of these 44 species 2 could be identified only to genus, 1 species is doubtfully mentioned and 5 are new to science. The 44 species we assigned to 2 families of athecate and 6 families of thecate hydroids. In many instances the species have been compared with the type material which, where necessary, was redescribed. A number of additional species, not represented in the John Murray collection has also been redescribed and/or figured. Practical• ly all the John Murray hydroids are figured. Deposition of spirit-preserved type and other material (alc.), including microslide preparations (slds) in the collections of the British Museum (Natural History) (BMNH) and in the collections of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (National Museum of Natural History), Leiden, Netherlands (RMNH), is indicated. Holotypes, and where necessary paratypes, have been indicated of Zygophylax millardae sp. -

Agassiz, 1862) and Ectopleura ralphi (Bale, 1884) are two of the nominal tubulariid species re- corded for the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWAO), presumably with wide but disjunct geographical ranges and similar morphologies. Our goal is to bring together data from morphology, histology, morphometry, cnidome, and molecules (COI and ITS1+5.8S) to assess the taxonomic identity of two populations of these nominal species in the SWAO. -

Biju-Duval, Institut Français du Pétrole2 ABSTRACT The Barbados Ridge complex lies east of the Lesser Antilles volcanic arc along the eastern margin of the Caribbean Plate. The complex dates in part from the Eocene, and elements of the arc system have been dated as Late Cretaceous and Late Jurassic, although most of the volcanic rocks date from the Tertiary, particularly the latter part. It is probable that the arc system was moved a considerable distance eastward with respect to North and South America during the Tertiary. The accretionary complex can be divided into zones running parallel to the arc, starting with a zone of initial accre- tion at the front of the complex where sediment is stripped from the ocean floor and the rate of deformation is greatest. This zone passes into one of stabilization where the deformation rate is generally lower, although there are localized zones of more active tectonics where the generally mildly deformed overlying blanket of sediment is significant dis- turbed. Supracomplex sedimentary basins that are locally very thick are developed in the southern part of the complex. The Barbados Ridge Uplift containing the island of Barbados lies at the western edge of the complex; between it and the volcanic arc lies a large forearc basin comprising the Tobago Trough and Lesser Antilles Trough. There are major longitudinal variations in the complex that are broadly related to the northward decrease in sedi- ment thickness away from terrigenous sources in South America and that are locally controlled by ridges in the oceanic igneous crust passing beneath the complex. -
