All day long the delegates at the 2005 Harvard conference on 20th-century studio ceramics had been listening to presentations on the Mingei movement in Japan, debating the role of folk art and the importance of Bernard Leach, a British potter who settled in Japan and became very influential. But as the main course was cleared away, those sitting at a table to one side of the room became captivated by a tale being recounted by another British potter, Edmund de Waal. It was about the Japanese netsuke his family had bought in the 1870s. Within half a century, they were one of the richest in Vienna, with a grand house on the Ringstrasse. At the Anschluss in 1938 the netsuke disappeared; stolen, the family thought. It was only after the war that they discovered they’d been hidden from the Nazis by a faithful servant, Anna. “This would make such a great book,” said Michael Goldfarb, a New York collector and one of those listening. “Edmund, you’ve got to stop talking and start writing. This is the book you were born to write.” Published in June 2010, “The Hare with Amber Eyes” has become the most successful family memoir of the decade. -

In this article we will analyze the functioning of conspiracy dispositives from the bottom up and the nexus between conspiracy dispositives and security dispositives in the context of the political rise of right-wing popu- list Pim Fortuyn and the various conspiracy theories that arose after his murder and the effects these conspiracy theories had on Dutch politics and society. These counter-conspiracy theories revolved mainly around the suggestion that the political establishment was responsible for the murder or at least had turned a blind eye to it. -

For the first time since World War II, 41 relatives from around Europe, the United States and Mexico toured the neo-Renaissance building that had been home to the Ephrussi family, European Jews whose wealth once rivaled that of the Rothschilds. “Itʼs not just a nice family gathering — itʼs a political act,” said Mr. de Waal in an interview the next day. Mr. De Waal, a British ceramic artist and best-selling author, is the great-grandson of Viktor von Ephrussi, who thrived in Vienna as a banker before fleeing the city after Hitler’s 1938 incorporation of Austria into the Third Reich. On Tuesday, the country’s president, Alexander Van der Bellen, welcomed the family to an exhibition opening nearby that tells their story. “The Ephrussis: Travel in Time,” at the Jewish Museum Vienna through March 8, presents the family’s history through documents, photographs and souvenirs that Mr. de Waal donated to the museum last year. Sisko Haikala DENOUNCING THE ENLIGHTENMENT BY MEANS OF A CONSPIRACY THESIS Gochhausens Enthullung der Weltburgerrepublik I rnst August Anton von Gochhausen's initially anonymous EEnthilllung der Weltburgerrepublik (Exposure of the Cosmopolitan Republic, 1786), with its theses on a "cosmopolitan conspiracy" which threatened the established political and religious order, is a notewor thy illustration of the rise of conspiracy thinking in the political cul ture of the late Enlightenment. Conspiracy theories generally emerge in times of crisis when scapegoats and monocausal explanations for problems and disasters at hand are searched for. They belong to irra tional elements in the history of thought and do not seem to fit into the picture of the 'Age of Reason'. However, signs of a crisis within the Enlightenment and illustrations of a growing awareness of the existence of such a crisis were visible in late eighteenth-century Eu rope well before the outbreak of the French Revolution. This crisis followed from conflicts between traditional and novel norms and 96 DENOUNCING THE ENLIGHTENMENT BY MEANS OF A CONSPIRACY THESIS from disappointment at progress in the Enlightenment which was sometimes seen as excessively slow, sometimes as excessively fast, sometimes as going astray. Divisions among the Enlighteners into various radical and moderate groups emerged, and a considerable rise in Counter-Enlightenment thought occurred. Such developments were reflections of accelerating processes of politicization. Unlike stereotypical interpretations of the German Enlightenment as an es sentially non-political movement suggest, an ideological polariza tion and a connected rivalry for dominance of public opinion was also taking place within German public discourse well before the beginning of the French Revolution. -

So doomed he was to wonder as a symbol to the world of the Second Coming--or as a symbol of the repentant sinner, or the unrepentant heretic. He was called The Wandering Jew. His name was supposedly Ahaseurus or Malchus or Cartaphilus. The below is an extract from "The Legend of the Wandering Jew" by Joseph Gaer (Menton Book, 1961). The first written account of the Legend of the Wandering Jew was chronicled at the great monastery of St. Albans, an English abbey famous for its historians. In 1228, a number of bishops and other church dignitaries gathered at the Abbey of St. Albans to authenticate additions to its collection of relics and to discuss, among other church problems, the then highly controversial topic of the widespread traffic in relics. -

In Germany, Jews are constantly aware of the impact on their own political and social status of the changing status of Turks, Armenians, Roma, Sinti, and Poles. In France, Jews keep a close eye on the success of North African Muslims vying for political and civil rights. In Britain, Jews position themselves ambivalently between the terra firma of the white Christian majority and the shaky territory of marginality shared by Pakistanis, Indians, Africans, and Caribbeans.
