    Sisko Haikala DENOUNCING THE ENLIGHTENMENT BY MEANS OF A CONSPIRACY THESIS Gochhausens Enthullung der Weltburgerrepublik I rnst August Anton von Gochhausen's initially anonymous EEnthilllung der Weltburgerrepublik (Exposure of the Cosmopolitan Republic, 1786), with its theses on a "cosmopolitan conspiracy" which threatened the established political and religious order, is a notewor­ thy illustration of the rise of conspiracy thinking in the political cul­ ture of the late Enlightenment. Conspiracy theories generally emerge in times of crisis when scapegoats and monocausal explanations for problems and disasters at hand are searched for. They belong to irra­ tional elements in the history of thought and do not seem to fit into the picture of the 'Age of Reason'. However, signs of a crisis within the Enlightenment and illustrations of a growing awareness of the existence of such a crisis were visible in late eighteenth-century Eu­ rope well before the outbreak of the French Revolution. Shore’s narrative approaches these years, and the period preceding the suppression, from a new perspective that covers individuals not usually discussed in works dealing with this topic. As well as examining the contributions of former Jesuits to fields as diverse as ethnology—a term and concept pioneered by an ex-Jesuit—and library science, where Jesuits and ex-Jesuits laid the groundwork for the great advances of the nineteenth century, the essay also explores the period the ex- iled Society spent in the Russian Empire. A PLAIDOYER Laura Anna Macor ABSTRACT In this essay, I deal with a grossly neglected aspect of Friedrich Hölderlin’s involvement in his historical and intellectual period, namely, his relationship with the secret order of the Bavarian Illuminati. Hölderlin’s native region of Württemberg was one of the organization’s most active colonies, as was almost every other Duchy or city Hölderlin happened to live in. It was therefore not merely coincidental that he was personally acquainted with many Illuminati and read a number of important writings connected to the society. Nonetheless, Hölderlin-scholarship has hitherto failed to grasp the relevance of this aspect. 1 Introduction This paper deals with Friedrich Hölderlin’s (1770–1843) severely and surprisingly neglected relationship with the secret order of the Bavarian Illuminati. Hölderlin’s involvement in his political context has been the subject of scholarly interest for many decades, occasioning a wide range of innovative research, for instance on his commitment to 104 L. This article seeks to develop a sociological understanding of the structural conditions that are associated with conspiratorial belief. Using aggregate Google search data to measure public interest in two popular political conspiracy theories, the findings indicate that social conditions associated with threat and insecurity, including unemployment, changes in partisan control of government, and demographic changes, are associated with increased conspiratorial ideation.
