AddiBall DODGEBALL RULES

1. The tournament will be held on a traditional court. Dodgeball games will be held within the end lines and sidelines of the basketball court. Players may only throw the dodgeball (standard IDA-approved balls -- 8.25” or 6.25” foam balls) while within the basketball court lines. Players may retrieve a dodgeball outside of the basketball court lines but must return within the basketball court to continue play.

2. A team is made up of 8-10 people. There are two divisions: Recreational (grades 3-6) and Competitive (6th grade to adult). For example, a recreational-age player may play up in the competitive division, but a competitive division player may not play down in the recreational division.

3. Each match is composed of up to 3 games. The team that wins 2 games out of 3 wins the match. 4. During tournament play, there are 2 referees that help facilitate the game. Referees start the game, confirm hits and catches, and count ball possession time.

5. There are 8 balls, split into 2 even groups near the ends of the centerline. During the opening rush (when the game starts), you may only grab the balls to your right. Players must the ball to the back wall in order to be “live” balls.

6. You are out if: 1) you step on or over a sideline or centerline while engaged in play (not to retrieve a ball outside of the court of play); 2) a thrown live ball hits your body -- all headshots count, however, we do not condone intentional headshots; 3) you throw a live ball and it is caught by an opponent; and 4) players are not allowed to deliberately cross the centerline to make a play, they will automatically be called out.

7. If a player is hit, he should drop all held balls, raise his arm to signal that he is out, and leave the court immediately and minimize gameplay disruption. (Once on the sidelines, knocked-out players are not allowed to kick or pass balls to their teammates.)

8. A thrown live ball can only hit out 1 player. Thrown balls that hit the ground, the wall, other balls, or other objects before hitting the opponent are considered dead balls, and are ineligible to hit players out.

9. You may block a thrown ball with a held ball. However, if you drop the blocking ball during the act of blocking, or if you fail to make a clean block (as in the thrown ball still ends up hitting or grazing your body afterwards), you are out.

10. It is considered a catch if an opponent’s ball hits a blocking ball and is then caught by the blocker. The blocker, however, must have the blocking ball in possession when making the catch; otherwise he is out

11. If a ball deflects off a player’s body, only that player can make a legal catch afterwards. The ball is dead if another player touches it, or if it hits a surface or object before it is caught

12. The first two of the three games do not have a “resurrection line” - once a player is out, he/she is out. For a tiebreaker game the “resurrection line” is in effect.

13. (For tiebreaker games only) If you are out, line up on the side in the order you got out (think of it as being in an “resurrection” line). If your teammate catches a ball, the player at the start of your team’s “resurrection” line comes back into play after touching the back wall (the teammate must be in the line at the time of the catch to be eligible to be brought back in).

14. You can only hold the ball for 10 seconds, afterwards, it will be considered dead. Dead balls need to be rolled over immediately to the other team.If the game comes down to 1 player per side, they have 10 seconds to hit each other out; if not, "Showdown" comes into effect. The game is paused, each player gets two balls, two balls are lined up at the ends of the centerline, and the centerline is dissolved. The first player to get the other player out wins.

15. At the 5 minute mark in a single game, regardless of the number of players remaining on each side, the center line dissolves (and no more “resurrection line”) and players may strike other players within the basketball court boundaries. The team with the last player remaining wins. 16. Honour System Officiating: it is ultimately up to the players to enforce and uphold the rules of dodgeball when playing or refereeing. Dodgeball relies on the honour system, in which officiating is determined more between players and less from the referees. However, if there is a controversial play, the referees will make the final call. They have the right to stop a game and discuss the incident before proceeding. In respect for the spirit of the game and for fellow players, there is absolutely no protesting allowed. However we encourage players to discuss and clarify any plays in a respectful manner with referees and Leads after the game is over.

17. Referee can pause the game at any point by saying, "Stop." At that point, all events after and during are void. a. The game restarts with remaining players against their respective walls with ball possession retained, but all ball counts are restarted. b. All balls on the ground remain where they lay. c. Referees restart the game by a countdown of "3, 2, 1, Dodgeball!"

18. Any unsportsmanlike conduct (words or actions) directed at the referee or a player from the other team will be ruled out of the game and/or match. It is the referee’s discretion whether to remove a player for the remainder of the game, the match, or the entire tournament. A player removed for the match or tournament must leave the gym immediately. A player removed from the tournament will not receive reimbursement.

19. Players may not use clothing or accessories to provide unfair advantage, or unfairly inhibit or assist the movement of the ball to make a catch or throw. Clothing (uniforms and accessories) is considered part of a player’s body. However, fallen off garments not attached to a body cannot be hit, or called out. Players are not allowed to play with gloves, bare hands only. Wraps for supporting recovering injuries are acceptable. Players without proper footwear are not permitted to play.

20. Have fun! This tournament is to raise awareness and funds to fight pediatric cancer!
