  • Graphical Model for Baskeball Match Simulation
Graphical Model for Baskeball Match Simulation Min-hwan Oh, Suraj Keshri, Garud Iyengar Columbia University New York, NY, USA, 10027 [email protected], [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Conventional approaches to simulate matches have ignored that in basketball the dynamics of ball movement is very sensitive to the lineups on the court and unique identities of players on both offense and defense sides. In this paper, we propose the simulation infrastructure that can bridge the gap between player identity and team level network. We model the progression of a basketball match using a probabilistic graphical model. We model every touch and event in a game as a sequence of transitions between discrete states. We treat the progression of a match as a graph, where each node is a network structure of players on the court, their actions, events, etc., and edges denote possible moves in the game flow. Our results show that either changes in the team lineup or changes in the opponent team lineup significantly affects the dynamics of a match progression. Evaluation on the match data for the 2013-14 NBA season suggests that the graphical model approach is appropriate for modeling a basketball match. 1 Introduction Predicting the outcomes of professional sports events is one of the most popular practices in the sports media, fan communities and, of course, sport betting related industries. Predictions range from human prediction to statistical analysis of historical data. In recent years, basketball, specifically the NBA, has received much atten- tion as a domain of analytics with the advent of player tracking data.

Gaming the System: The Exemption of Professional Sports Teams from the Fair Labor Standards Act Charlotte S. Alexander†* & Nathaniel Grow** This article examines a little known exemption to the Fair Labor Standards Act relieving seasonal recreational or amusement employers from their obligation to pay the minimum wage and overtime. After evaluating the existing, confused case law surrounding the exemption, we propose a new, simplified framework for applying the provision. We then apply this framework to a recent wave of FLSA lawsuits brought by cheerleaders, minor league baseball players, and stadium workers against professional sports teams.

The cultural disconnect was that drastic. France, because of its colonies, half the team is black. There was a serious disconnect between the players and the staff. When I was a rookie, we had 3 meetings: one to manage your money, one for security matters, one to handle lovers. All this was meant to protect the NBA brand, the corporate brand. DOI: 10.4025/jphyseduc.v29i1.2931 Original Article OFFENSIVE TECHNICAL-TACTICAL ANALYSIS ON NBA FINALIST TEAMS: A CASE STUDY ANÁLISE TÉCNICO-TÁTICA OFENSIVA DE EQUIPES FINALISTAS DA NBA: UM ESTUDO DE CASO Vitor Ciampolini1, Juarez Vieira do Nascimento1, Sérgio José Ibáñez2, Leonardo de Oliveira Nicolazzi1, Maurício Camaroto3, Júlio César Schmitt Rocha1 and Michel Angillo Saad1 1Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianópolis-SC, Brasil. 2Universidade de Extremadura, Cáceres, Espanha. 3Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina, Florianópolis-SC, Brasil. ABSTRACT The San Antonio Spurs (SAS) teamwork and the team led by three players of the Miami Heat (MIA) marked the 2014 NBA finals. This study aimed to analyze the offensive actions on those games. Game indicators were obtained through the official NBA box-scores and game analysis took place through an adapted version of the IAD-BB. Field goals made, assists, and total points presented significant association between the teams, in which the SAS presented higher scores in comparison to the MIA. While the SAS presented a significantly higher absolute frequency of offenses with three to five and six to eight passes made, the MIA had a higher number of offenses with zero to two passes made. Significant association was identified for the shooting conditions between the teams, in which the SAS presented a higher number of shots under ‘passively guarded’ and wide-open conditions, whereas the MIA had a higher number of shots under pressure. However, neither teams’ shooting efficacy indicated a significant association. We belive that the higher number of field goals made, assists, total score, and a higher frequency of offenses with a bigger number of passes can be considered the determining factors for the SAS success in the games investigated.

  • MEDIA GUIDE VLADE DIVAC GENERAL MANAGER Vlade Divac Enters His Sixth Season at the Kings, His Fifth As General Manager
2019-20 PRESEASON MEDIA GUIDE VLADE DIVAC GENERAL MANAGER Vlade Divac enters his sixth season at the Kings, his fifth as General Manager. He joined the Kings on March 3, 2015 as the team’s vice president of basketball and franchise operations and was named General Manager on August 31, 2015. One of the most respected and revered individuals in franchise history, Divac returns to Sacramento having spent more than a decade serving the NBA and international sporting communities with the same distinction that solidified his reputation as a consummate teammate, player, humanitarian and overall difference-maker on and off the basketball court. Divac has served in a variety of administrative and leadership roles since retiring from professional basketball in 2007. In addition to his philanthropic efforts focused on helping children in his native country and other reaches of the globe, he was named President of the Serbian Olympic Committee in 2009. Under his guidance, Serbian athletes have enjoyed greater success and the country is experiencing a resurgence on the international stage. In 16 NBA campaigns with Los Angeles, Charlotte and Sacramento, Divac averaged 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game over 1,134 contests. He is only one of four players in league annals to accrue at least 13,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists, 1,200 steals and 1,600 blocked shots, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett with that distinction. His six seasons in a Kings uniform marked the most successful period in team history, including a league-high 61 wins in 2001-02 and a trip to the Western Conference Finals.

  • Preparing for the Madness
Cinco 2014 Spurs Championship Celebration On June 15, 2014, the San Antoni o Spurs defeated the Miami Heat 4-1 in the NBA Finals to secure their 5th NBA Championship in franchise history and their first in seven seasons. I led the preparation for the in-arena ceremony, river parade, Alamo- dome celebration, and ring ceremony. Preparing For The Madness Once the Spurs advanced to the 2014 NBA Finals to face off versus the Miami Heat for a second consecutive season, preparation for a possible airport return, river parade and Alamodome celebration promptly began. Since it had been seven years since the last time the organization had celebrated an NBA championship, there were several questions to be answered. Luckily, we’d prepared the season before when the Spurs lost a heartbreaking seven-game series to Miami in the 2013 NBA Finals. First, we needed to plan the river parade. This parade starts in downtown San Anto- nio and several barges float the San Antonio River in front of more than 100,000 Spurs fans. The culmination of the river parade takes place at the historic Arneson River Theatre. It is here that a band and DJ perform and players and coaches stop to address the crowd. Among the elements that needed to be planned were Riverwalk and barge décor, the booking of entertainment acts for the stage, start and ending logistics, distribution of individuals on the barges and most importantly, creating a schedule for television and the execution of the timing.
