MEDIA GUIDE VLADE DIVAC GENERAL MANAGER Vlade Divac Enters His Sixth Season at the Kings, His Fifth As General Manager 2019-20 PRESEASON MEDIA GUIDE VLADE DIVAC GENERAL MANAGER Vlade Divac enters his sixth season at the Kings, his fifth as General Manager. He joined the Kings on March 3, 2015 as the team’s vice president of basketball and franchise operations and was named General Manager on August 31, 2015. One of the most respected and revered individuals in franchise history, Divac returns to Sacramento having spent more than a decade serving the NBA and international sporting communities with the same distinction that solidified his reputation as a consummate teammate, player, humanitarian and overall difference-maker on and off the basketball court. Divac has served in a variety of administrative and leadership roles since retiring from professional basketball in 2007. In addition to his philanthropic efforts focused on helping children in his native country and other reaches of the globe, he was named President of the Serbian Olympic Committee in 2009. Under his guidance, Serbian athletes have enjoyed greater success and the country is experiencing a resurgence on the international stage. In 16 NBA campaigns with Los Angeles, Charlotte and Sacramento, Divac averaged 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game over 1,134 contests. He is only one of four players in league annals to accrue at least 13,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists, 1,200 steals and 1,600 blocked shots, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett with that distinction. His six seasons in a Kings uniform marked the most successful period in team history, including a league-high 61 wins in 2001-02 and a trip to the Western Conference Finals. His name adorns the franchise record book in several key categories, ranking fourth all-time during the Sacramento-era in rebounds (3,538) and blocked shots (523), ninth in points scored (5,176), eighth with 454 games played, free throws made (1,209) and in steals (453). Divac’s jersey was retired by the Kings in 2009. PEJA STOJAKOVIC ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER One of the most successful players in Kings annals, Peja Stojakovic enters his fifth season with the Kings organization, and second as Assistant General Manager. His responsibilities include keeping abreast of domestic and international talent pools available to the Kings as well as General Manager Vlade Divac with the team’s scouting efforts. Selected 14th overall in the 1996 NBA Draft, the Serbian-born sharpshooter helped form a nucleus that would go on to participate in the postseason in each of his seven seasons in a Kings uniform. His #16 jersey was retired on December 16, 2014. The Kings drafted Serbian-born Stojakovic in the first-round (14th overall) of the 1996 NBA Draft. In addition to leading the Kings in games played during the Sacramento-era, Stojakovic ranks first in Kings franchise history (1948-current) in three-pointers made (1,070) and attempted (2,687), and in free throw percentage (.893). He is also ranked third on the Kings all-time scoring list with 9,498 points scored, fourth in field goals made (3,352) and attempted (7,269), and sixth in steals (543). Stojakovic’s professional career began at the age of 14 with the Serbian club Red Star Belgrade. After being drafted by the Kings, he went on to play 13 seasons in the NBA highlighted by an NBA championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011. Also during his NBA career, Stojakovic won the NBA All-Star Weekend Three-Point Shootout twice and was the first European-born player to win an All-Star Weekend competition. He ranks 5th in NBA history in career free throw percentage (.895), and 7th in playoff free throw percentage (.900). Additionally, Stojakovic is the first player in NBA history to start a game off by scoring his team’s first 20 points. KEN CATANELLA ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER Ken Catanella begins his fourth season as the Kings Assistant General Manager. He collaborates with General Manager Vlade Divac and assists in the management of all day-to-day basketball operations, including all player-related matters such as the draft, free agency, trades, and the team’s strategic plan. He has more than 20 years of experience in NBA, NCAA, and international basketball leagues where he has played, coached and managed basketball teams at nearly every level. Catanella joined the Kings after enjoying a successful run over five years (2011-16) with the Detroit Pistons, including the last two seasons as the team’s assistant general manager. During his tenure, he played a prominent role in the front office of a club that underwent a significant turnaround to one of the NBA’s rising young teams. He joined the Pistons after several years at the NBA League Office, where he directed the NBA’s salary cap and basketball analytics efforts. He also was part of the NBA league office working group that served the NBA Labor Relations Committee in negotiating the league’s 2011 CBA with the National Basketball Players Association. Prior to his time with the League Office, Catanella led the analytics efforts of the New Jersey Nets and managed the creation and implementation of the Nets’ statistical scouting systems. He also advised the team’s front office and ownership by evaluating domestic and international player personnel as well as formulating the team’s strategic financial plan alongside the team’s general manager. Before joining the Nets, Catanella worked in both basketball and finance. Following graduation from Amherst College in 1997, he worked on Wall Street providing analytics on stadium/arena financings for professional teams and valuing publicly traded companies. His basketball experience includes time as a collegiate player and assistant coach at Amherst College and a professional player for the Cologne 99ers of Germany. He also later served as the German Bundesliga team’s Assistant General Manager. While earning his MBA at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, Catanella was a graduate assistant on the 2004 and 2005 Duke University Men’s Basketball teams. He developed systems and analytical scouting methods for Duke’s coaches, and concurrently interned with the Assistant General Manager of the Philadelphia 76ers. JOE DUMARS SPECIAL ADVISOR TO THE GENERAL MANAGER Joe Dumars begins his first season with the Kings as a Special Advisor to the General Manager. In this role, Dumars will report to General Manager Vlade Divac and will serve as a resource to the front office. Dumars joins the Kings with over 30 years of NBA experience both as a player and front office executive in addition to an extensive executive business background. Since 2017, he has served as president of the Basketball Division for Independent Sports & Entertainment (ISE), a full-service sports agency representing more than 300 players from the NBA, NFL and MLB. Outside of basketball Dumars was the founder and CEO of automotive supply company Detroit Technologies Inc. for 10 years (1996-06), helping the company grow to more than $120 million in revenues. He is also the founder and owner of the Joe Dumars Fieldhouse, a multi-purpose, indoor sports complex and entertainment facility with two locations in Detroit. The Hall of Fame guard served as president of basketball operations for the Detroit Pistons for 13 seasons (2000-14). In 2004, he became the first African American executive to lead an organization to an NBA title. He also guided the team to six straight Eastern Conference Finals appearances, two Conference Championships and was named NBA Executive of the Year in 2003. In 2010, Sports Illustrated named Dumars one of the Top 10 sports executives of the past decade. During his 14-year NBA career, Dumars won two titles, was named NBA Finals MVP, appeared in six All-Star games and was named All-Defensive First Team four times. Dumars amassed averages of 16.1 points (.460 FG%, .382 3pt%, .843 FT%), 2.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, .9 steals, and 34.5 minutes per game in 1018 career games (944 starts), all with the Detroit Pistons. He was also a member of the 1994 gold-medal USA Basketball World Championships team. Dumars was the first recipient of the NBA Sportsmanship Award (1995-96), which was subsequently named the Joe Dumars Trophy. Dumars holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from McNeese State University. LUKE WALTON HEAD COACH Luke Walton joins the Kings after spending the previous three seasons as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. Under Walton, the Lakers improved each season and his fast-paced offense ranked amongst the top in the league. In 2016-17, the Lakers improved from a franchise-worst record by nine games, finishing the season 26-56. In the following years, the Lakers continued to improve, posting records of 35-47 in 2017-18 and 37-45 in 2018-19. Walton has been praised by his players and across the league for his ability to develop young players and improve their skills. Before joining the Lakers, Walton was an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors from 2014 to 2016. During his time with the team, they appeared in consecutive NBA Finals and won the NBA Championship in 2015. He received Western Conference Coach of the Month honors (November 2015) after serving as interim head coach in Steve Kerr’s absence and leading the Warriors to a 39-4 start for the 2015-16 season, including winning the first 24 games, an NBA record. • Graphical Model for Baskeball Match Simulation
Graphical Model for Baskeball Match Simulation Min-hwan Oh, Suraj Keshri, Garud Iyengar Columbia University New York, NY, USA, 10027 [email protected], [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Conventional approaches to simulate matches have ignored that in basketball the dynamics of ball movement is very sensitive to the lineups on the court and unique identities of players on both offense and defense sides. In this paper, we propose the simulation infrastructure that can bridge the gap between player identity and team level network. We model the progression of a basketball match using a probabilistic graphical model. We model every touch and event in a game as a sequence of transitions between discrete states. We treat the progression of a match as a graph, where each node is a network structure of players on the court, their actions, events, etc., and edges denote possible moves in the game flow. Our results show that either changes in the team lineup or changes in the opponent team lineup significantly affects the dynamics of a match progression. Evaluation on the match data for the 2013-14 NBA season suggests that the graphical model approach is appropriate for modeling a basketball match. 1 Introduction Predicting the outcomes of professional sports events is one of the most popular practices in the sports media, fan communities and, of course, sport betting related industries. Predictions range from human prediction to statistical analysis of historical data. In recent years, basketball, specifically the NBA, has received much atten- tion as a domain of analytics with the advent of player tracking data.
