For Immediate Release ‘THE THREE GIFTS’ CAST BIOS DEAN CAIN (Jack Green) – Dean Cain garnered international attention portraying a national icon on television, and he has since parlayed his craft into an accomplished film and producing career. Cain stars in the drama “Our Child is Missing,” based on a true story about a small town that bands together to find a missing child. He also completed production on the independent comedy, “Five Dollars a Day” alongside Christopher Walken, Sharon Stone and Amanda Peet. The film follows the conservative son of a thrifty conman who begrudgingly joins his father on the road after being released from jail for one of his dad's earlier crimes. Cain also starred in “Final Approach,” a Hallmark Original Movie Event about a group of militant American terrorists aboard a doomed airliner. He was also seen in the controversial “September Dawn,” a love story written and directed by Cain’s father, Christopher Cain; the movie is set during a tense encounter between a wagon train of settlers and a renegade Mormon group. Cain’s other film credits include “Out of Time,” opposite Denzel Washington and Eva Mendes, the independent film “Lost” and “Bailey’s Millions,” opposite Tim Curry. On the small screen, Cain has played guest roles on “CSI: Miami” and “Smallville.” He also recently starred in “Crossroads: A Story of Forgiveness,” a Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation on CBS, and “The Gambler, The Girl and the Gunslinger,” for Hallmark Channel. Cain’s other television credits include “The Perfect Husband,” “Clubhouse” opposite Christopher Lloyd, “Hope and Faith,” and “Law and Order: SVU,” a recurring role on “Las Vegas,” a starring role in the NBC movie “10.5: Apocalypse” and the Lifetime Original Movies “A Christmas Wedding” and “Making Mr. Right.” Cain’s shot to stardom came when he starred as Clark Kent/Superman in the highly acclaimed television series “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.” He has also starred on the big screen in films such as “Rat Race” opposite Whoopi Goldberg, Cuba Gooding Jr., Seth Green, and John Cleese and “The Broken Hearts Club,” a romantic comedy that premiered with rave reviews at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival. Cain grew up in Malibu and made his feature film debut in 1984 in the critically acclaimed “The Stone Boy” with Robert Duvall and Glenn Close. An athlete at heart, he attended Princeton University, where he was an All-American football player and set three NCAA records for interceptions, two of which still stand today. After graduating as Princeton’s top athlete, he signed with the Buffalo Bills, but a knee injury ended his professional career before it began. He turned back to acting and starred in the police comedy “Best Men” with Drew Barrymore and Luke Wilson, “Flight of Fancy,” the telefilms “Dog Boys,” “Rag and Bone,” “Christmas Rush,” (more) HALLMARK CHANNEL/ ‘THE THREE GIFTS’ – Cast Bios – Page 2 “Futuresport” co-starring Wesley Snipes and Vanessa Williams, as well as the Hallmark Hall of Fame film “The Runaway” with Maya Angelou. His production credits include several smaller films and the hit syndicated series “Ripley’s Believe It or Not,” which he also hosted. The show premiered as the highest rated original series on cable. He has also developed a number of series with Sony Pictures, including the reality-based “On Parole” and an instructional dance DVD starring choreographers Cris Judd and Eddie Garcia. Cain currently resides in Los Angeles with his seven-year-old son Christopher. ### JEAN LOUISA KELLY (Cherie Green) – Born in central Massachusetts, Jean Louisa Kelly was raised in a family of musical talents. Her first stage appearance was her second grade Christmas play, but she was truly bitten by the theater bug when she had two lines of dialogue as Marta in The Sound of Music. By the time she was a teenager, Kelly spent almost every day at ballet, tap and jazz dance classes, as well as voice lessons. Her first professional job was the title role in the musical Annie, at Theatre by the Sea in Rhode Island, followed by a number of other musicals and plays in the New England area. When she was 14, Kelly competed in a contest called “Talent America” and made it to the finals in New York City singing a medley of songs from “Funny Girl.” Through the contest, in which she won Second Place, she landed an agent, and the following year, she auditioned for the original Broadway cast of Into the Woods. Kelly was cast in the role of Snow White and the understudy of Little Red and Rapunzel, both of which she performed during her time with the show. During this time, she lived in New York and attended the Professional Children’s School. The following year, Kelly’s family moved to Maryland and she booked the role of Tia in the John Hughes film “Uncle Buck,” starring John Candy. Upon completing the movie, she returned to Maryland to finish high school. She then earned her B.A. in English Literature from Columbia College at Columbia University in New York City. Upon graduating, she quickly booked an MCI commercial. Soon after, she got her next big break, playing singer Rowena Morgan in the movie “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” starring Richard Dreyfus. Within a year, she was singing again as Luisa in Michael Ritchie’s musical film “The Fantasticks.” During the next few years, Kelly got married, and she and her husband bought an apartment in New York City. She appeared onstage in numerous musicals and did several television movies and guest spots, including a recurring role as Nurse Diane on the NBC sitcom “Mad About You.” She was also a regular in the NBC dramedy “Cold Feet.” Her next big project was the CBS sitcom, “Yes, Dear,” in which she starred as Kim Warner, a role that garnered her a Young (more) HALLMARK CHANNEL/ ‘THE THREE GIFTS’ – Cast Bios – Page 3 Artist Award nomination. During her hiatuses, she also performed in many musicals in the Los Angeles area, such as Company, Pippin and Applause, as well as playing the title role in It Girl off-Broadway in New York City. Since “Yes, Dear,” Kelly has guest starred on the shows “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Ghost Whisperer,” “Eli Stone,” “Gary Unmarried” and “Surviving Suburbia.” She appeared as Lois Lane in the New York and Los Angeles performances of It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Superman! and has been a soloist for numerous charity events and benefits. She currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband and two children. ### MIMI KENNEDY (Rita Green) – Born in Rochester, New York, Mimi Kennedy has become a renowned actress, both on screen and on stage, as well as an author and activist. After graduating from Smith College, Kennedy’s acting career took off, working, for instance, on the original Broadway production of Grease. By 1984, she had starred in a couple short-lived series, “Stockard Channing in Just Friends” and “The Two of Us,” in addition to a recurring role in the award-winning series “St. Elsewhere.” Kennedy starred in numerous television movies, including “Mr. Boogedy” and “Bride of Boogedy,” before landing a lead role in the Oscar and Golden Globe nominated feature film “Chances Are,” with Cybill Shepherd and Robert Downey Jr. She then co-starred in such features as “Immediate Family” with Glenn Close and “Pump Up the Volume,” which won Best Film at the Seattle International Film Festival. Since then, Kennedy has appeared with Julia Roberts in “Erin Brockovich” and in the independent feature “Man in the Chair.” Kennedy is perhaps best known for her role as ‘Abby O'Neil,’ the mother of Jenna Elfman’s character on the hit ABC comedy series “Dharma & Greg.” Appearing in every episode of the show, Kennedy played a caring mother with a desire for grandkids and a radical vegan whose dietary restrictions only complicate things. During its five successful seasons, “Dharma & Greg” garnered extensive recognition, including several Golden Globe and Emmy® nominations, a Golden Globe award and a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Television New Comedy Series. Kennedy’s other television credits include a starring role on the Emmy® winning series “Homefront” and the pilot for “Bless this House,” as well as guest appearances on “Knot’s Landing,” “Baywatch Nights” and “Cybill.” More recently, she has appeared on several medical dramas, including “Strong Medicine,” “Cold Case,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “House M.D.” and “ER.” She also directed episodes of “Knot’s Landing” and appeared as a celebrity guest on the game show “Hollywood Squares.” A self-proclaimed hippy, Kennedy is an activist for human rights, as well as for environmental (more) HALLMARK CHANNEL/ ‘THE THREE GIFTS’ – Cast Bios – Page 4 and labor issues. She is also the author of Taken to the Stage: The Education of an Actress, published in 1996; the book details Kennedy’s experiences in the entertainment industry. Before starting his career in Los Angeles, VelJohnson earned his Bachelor of Arts from New York University. Best known for his role as Carl Winslow on the Emmy-nominated sitcom “Family Matters,” VelJohnson was the only cast member to appear in every episode of the show’s nine-year run.

Article Title ‘Give people what they expect’: John Hughes’ Family Films and Seriality in 1990s Hollywood Author Details: Dr Holly Chard [email protected] Biography: Holly Chard is Lecturer in Contemporary Screen Media at the University of Brighton. Her research focuses on the U.S. media industries in the 1980s and 1990s. Her recent and forthcoming publications include: a chapter on Macaulay Culkin’s career as a child star, a monograph focusing on the work of John Hughes and a co- authored journal article on Hulk Hogan’s family films. Acknowledgements: The author would like to thank Frank Krutnik and Kathleen Loock for their invaluable feedback on this article and Daniel Chard for assistance with proofreading. 1 ‘Give people what they expect’: John Hughes’ Family Films and Seriality in 1990s Hollywood Keywords: seriality, Hollywood, comedy, family film Abstract: This article explores serial production strategies and textual seriality in Hollywood cinema during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Focusing on John Hughes’ ‘high concept’ family comedies, it examines how Hughes exploited the commercial opportunities offered by serial approaches to both production and film narrative. First, I consider why Hughes’ production set-up enabled him to standardize his movies and respond quickly to audience demand. My analysis then explores how the Home Alone films (1990-1997), Dennis the Menace (1993) and Baby’s Day Out (1994) balanced demands for textual repetition and novelty. Article: Described by the New York Times as ‘the most prolific independent filmmaker in Hollywood history’, John Hughes created and oversaw a vast number of movies in the 1980s and 1990s.1 In a period of roughly fourteen years, from the release of National Lampoon’s Vacation (Ramis, 1983) to the release of Home Alone 3 (Gosnell, 1997), Hughes received screenwriting credits on twenty-seven screenplays, of which he produced eighteen, directed eight and executive produced two.

Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible.

  • 275. – Part One
    275. – PART ONE 275. Clifford (1994) Okay, here’s the deal: I don’t know you, you don’t know me, but if you are anywhere near a television right now I need you to stop whatever it is that you’re doing and go watch “Clifford” on HBO Max. This is another film that has a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes which just leads me to believe that all of the critics who were popular in the nineties didn’t have a single shred of humor in any of their non-existent funny bones. I loved this movie when I was seven, and I love it even more when I’m thirty-three. It’s genius. Martin Short (who at the time was forty-four) plays a ten-year-old hyperactive nightmare child from hell. I mean it, this kid might actually be the devil. He is straight up evil, conniving, manipulative and all-told probably causes no less than ten million dollars-worth of property damage. And, again, the plot is so simple – he just wants to go to Dinosaur World. There are so many comedy films with such complicated plots and motivations for their characters, but the simplistic genius of “Clifford” is just this – all this kid wants on the entire planet is to go to Dinosaur World. That’s it. The movie starts with him and his parents on an plane to Hawaii for a business trip, and Clifford knows that Dinosaur Land is in Los Angeles, therefore he causes so much of a ruckus that the plane has to make an emergency landing.
