Russ Abbot, Stephanie Beacham, Phillip Jackson, Alison Steadman, June Whitfield and Paula Wilcox will all star in Grey Matters (working title), which goes into production in the Spring. Set in Thurnemouth, ‘Norfolk’s only west-facing resort’, the story follows three newly retired couples as they rediscover what it means to have time on their hands. Talking about the new series, BBC Controller of Comedy Shane Allen said: “This is a very modern, affectionate and brutally honest single-cam- era take on a stage of life often stereotyped and outmoded in sitcomworld. The highly acclaimed pro- duction has been playing to packed houses at some of the country’s biggest theatres since heading out on tour last year. The Regent is reporting initial record box office sales for the show, with ten per cent of available tickets being snapped up within forty-eight hours of going on sale last month. Set during the First World War, War Horse is the moving story of a young boy named Albert and his beloved horse Joey, who’s been requisitioned by the British Army. Commenting on its Autumn 2014 visit to Stoke, Victoria Power, Marketing Manager at the Regent, said: “It’s great news for the theatre and for the wider area to have such a strong and Ska legends open new iconic show like War Horse touring here this year. Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Arts › Features Reviews Books Review: Punt and Dennis – Ploughing on Regardless Hilarious radio duo Hugh Dennis and Steve Punt take to stage as Katy Sandalls reviews Monday 17 February 2014 Photo courtesy of Punt and Dennis ★★★★☆ As a perennial fan of Hugh Dennis and Steve Punt’s inputs on the BBC Radio 4 programme The Now Show, the prospect of seeing them live on stage promised to be a treat – and it didn’t disappoint. Indeed, sat in the majestic setting of the York Grand Opera House, at times it felt like I was at a recording of the radio show with Punt producing his usual masterful set ups for Dennis to later pick up and run with. And run he did, with topics ranging from the TV listings experience to our obsession with the snow the show touched upon every possible avenue. One thing that did come across, lost to a radio audience, was Dennis’ mastery of visual comedy. A particular favourite being his take on the giving out of buns in Denmark to celebrate the signing of the treaty of Rome. That was the first and probably the last time I will see a man old enough to be my father walk in circles around a stage with the flap of jacket lifted up showing the audience his “beautiful buns”. Punt’s earlier cynical comment really summed this up well; the pair are indeed “wasted on the radio”.

  • Doctor Who and the Politics of Casting Lorna Jowett, University
Doctor Who and the politics of casting Lorna Jowett, University of Northampton Abstract: This article argues that while long-running science fiction series Doctor Who (1963-89; 1996; 2005-) has started to address a lack of diversity in its casting, there are still significant imbalances. Characters appearing in single episodes are more likely to be colourblind cast than recurring and major characters, particularly the title character. This is problematic for the BBC as a public service broadcaster but is also indicative of larger inequalities in the television industry. Examining various examples of actors cast in Doctor Who, including Pearl Mackie who plays companion Bill Potts, the article argues that while steady progress is being made – in the series and in the industry – colourblind casting often comes into tension with commercial interests and more risk-averse decision-making. Keywords: colourblind casting, television industry, actors, inequality, diversity, race, LGBTQ+ 1 Doctor Who and the politics of casting Lorna Jowett The Britain I come from is the most successful, diverse, multicultural country on earth. But here’s my point: you wouldn’t know it if you turned on the TV. Too many of our creative decision-makers share the same background. They decide which stories get told, and those stories decide how Britain is viewed. (Idris Elba 2016) If anyone watches Bill and she makes them feel that there is more of a place for them then that’s fantastic. I remember not seeing people that looked like me on TV when I was little. My mum would shout: ‘Pearl! Come and see.
