Up to its base the path winds along the wide cart, which is the most frequented by tourists who stay in the famous place: in fact, the road to Serrabassa della Verginetta is wide and almost flat and leads to a nice source. It also winds in the shade of giant fir trees and is enriched with benches. Located at 1730 m above sea level it is surrounded by imposing Apennine Mountains that reach 2000 m above sea level, in particular from the Alpe Tre Potenze (1,940 m s.l.m.). It owes its name to the gloomy reflection emanating from its waters, which enter the Sestaione torrent, the largest tributary of the river Lima, which in turn is the main tributary of the river Serchio. • The Impacts in Real Estate of Landscape Values: Evidence from Tuscany (Italy)
sustainability Article The Impacts in Real Estate of Landscape Values: Evidence from Tuscany (Italy) Francesco Riccioli 1,* , Roberto Fratini 2 and Fabio Boncinelli 2 1 Department of Veterinary Science—Rural Economics Section, University of Pisa, 56124 Pisa, Italy 2 Department of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Forestry, University of Florence, 50144 Firenze, Italy; roberto.fratini@unifi.it (R.F.); fabio.boncinelli@unifi.it (F.B.) * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Using spatial econometric techniques and local spatial statistics, this study explores the relationships between the real estate values in Tuscany with the individual perception of satisfaction by landscape types. The analysis includes the usual territorial variables such as proximity to urban centres and roads. The landscape values are measured through a sample of respondents who expressed their aesthetic-visual perceptions of different types of land use. Results from a multivariate local Geary highlight that house prices are not spatial independent and that between the variables included in the analysis there is mainly a positive correlation. Specifically, the findings demonstrate a significant spatial dependence in real estate prices. The aesthetic values influence the real estate price throughout more a spatial indirect effect rather than the direct effect. Practically, house prices in specific areas are more influenced by aspects such as proximity to essential services. The results seem to show to live close to highly aesthetic environments not in these environments. The results relating to the distance from the main roads, however, seem counterintuitive. This result probably depends on the evidence that these areas suffer from greater traffic jam or pollution or they are preferred for alternative uses such as for locating industrial plants or big shopping centres rather than residential Citation: Riccioli, F.; Fratini, R.; use.

  • Catiline in Fiesole and Florence: the After-Life of a Roman Conspirator
Catiline in Fiesole and Florence: The After-life of a Roman Conspirator PATRICIA J. OSMOND The story of Catiline, the Roman noble who plotted to overthrow the Roman Republic in 63 B.C., occupies a significant place in Florentine historiography and political thought of the later Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Starting with the Chronica de origine civitatis (ca. 1228), this article traces the sources of the medieval account back to the ancient epitomes and investigates its relation to Sallust's Bellum Catilinae. It then describes the two branches or traditions of the story that developed in the course of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries: (1) the classical or civic, which centered on the figure of Catiline-the- villain, rebel and enemy of Rome (and of Rome's daughter-city Florence) and (2) the feudal or chivalric, which recounted the legendary adventures of Catiline-the-knight, pro- tector of Fiesole, the rival of Florence. In the final sections of the article, attention focuses on the success of the classical version of the story, linked to Guelf ambienti and, in turn, to the growth of a conservative republican ideology. While the celebration of Roman civic virtues, summed up in Cicero's defense of the res publica against the rebel Catiline, legiti- mated and ennobled the claims of the rising merchant and banking families, the vilifica- tion of Catiline as public enemy provided effective propaganda against new challenges from lower-class movements. Continuously present in the elaboration of Florentine "civic humanism," Sallust's story of Catiline supplies, in fact, an important connection between Guelf patriotism and the classicizing republicanism of the Quattrocento.

Begin in Abetone, a municipality in the Province of Pistoia located about 80 kilometers (50 mi) northwest of Florence and about 49 kilometers (30 mi) northwest of Pistoia. Located at 1388m., it is the most famous ski destination in central Italy, thanks to its 50 km of ski slopes and trails on Monte Gomito, Monte Cimone and Libro Aperto, which attract mountain hikers and cyclists that use the chair lifts. From the Gomito Mountain we will board the cableway and reach Monte Dente della Vecchia and two famous glacial lakes of the Apennines, Lago Nero and Lago Piatto. Located at 1730m, Lago Nero is surrounded by the imposing Apennine mountains which reach 2000m and owes its name to the gloomy reflection emanating from its waters. The Lago Piatto is a small lake of glacial origin located at an altitude of 1823 meters. In its clear waters the peak of the Alpe delle Tre Potenze is reflected. There are no permanent fish in the lakes, but there are two species of newts, protected amphibians: the alpine and the crested. Around the lake you can see marmots and the golden eagle as well as the partridge and the buzzard. Among the flora are blueberry, the raspberry, the mountain pine, a variety of garlic, juniper, mountain pine, the mezzereo and the beech. After exploring the lakes we will make our way back to the cableway, enjoy a typical Tuscan lunch at a local restaurant and then transfer back to Montecatini Terme arriving in the evening.
